“A Sicilian experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

This family run hotel is all about living the Sicilian experience. The hotel owner is also a restauranteur with a professional touch, who cares about the guests and their well-being. The hotel is not pretentious or posh but is nicely appointed and beautifully clean. The reception staff are welcoming and speak various languages. Hotel Moderno is situated right in the heart of Erice so you can walk to all the amenities and experience the feel of this ancient town. If you need it they will collect your luggage from the car park so you don't get lost or stuck in the narrow streets.

For me the special secret is the superb food served in the restaurant - a marvellous antipasto selection, pasta dishes made from scratch; fish or meat is always fresh with vegetables; and the desserts are home-made ...cannoli and cassata siciliana with fresh ricotta are among my favourites. The waiter can recommend the best local wine to try with your meal and the service is impeccable.

The rooms are spacious, quiet and clean with comfortable beds; they have all the commodities and the are showers hot - perhaps a little old fashioned is the decor but for me that is part of the charm.

The hotel is clean, comfortable and well located if you don't mind a walk up from the public car park. Bathroom was a bit a small but that's not unusual for Sicily. Friendly staff.

One tip. If you're staying in Erice make sure you buy a weekly parking ticket. They are available from the shack near the bus stop and cost 7 Euros for the week (less than the daily cost). It's a bit of a palaver and you'll need your car docs and ID. The car park officials weren't that helpful either but it's still worth doing.

Erice is a beautiful town with great views and well worth staying a couple of days.

We spent to nights in Erice with our twelve-year old daughter. I highly recommend this place -- while not fancy, it is clean, comfortable, and an excellent value. We had room 37, which has a small balcony overlooking the street. While the room is very simply furnished, I was struck the cleanliness of everything in the room, the sheets, and the bathroom.

We thought the food was excellent...so much so that we ate dinner there both nights. Our daughter could not stop talking about the vegetable soup. The antipasti buffet is quite good as well. Overall, the food was well prepared and flavorful. I thought the breakfast was quite nice, although better the first day than the second (due to bowl of fresh apricots and peaches at our table the first day). Both days, however, we came downstairs to a pitcher of freshly squeezed orange juice at our table.

Another highlight was the terrace. After a day of exploring the beautiful, historical city of Erice, we all took books to the terrace and watched the clouds break into the city. Wonderfully relaxing. The family that runs this place is friendly, quiet, and take obvious pride in their hotel.

We had one of the front rooms with a balcony. It was probably the cleanest hotel room I've ever seen in Sicily. It could use some updating, but this is how European hotel rooms are. The front room was a bit noisy- around 2 am some young people were being loud outside, but I fell right back asleep. The bed was adequate; however, you can certainly feel springs. The location is wonderful. Overall, I thought this was a good choice.

We are an American couple who spent one night at Moderno in late April 2013. If Erice (on top of a mountain about half a mile above Trapani and the sea with spectacular views) is medieval in feel, the Hotel Moderno feels 19th Century, dark but with electricity. Our room was clean, bed comfortable and bathroom facilities satisfactory. We made the error of arriving on a sunny Sunday afternoon, when the town was crawling with tourists (mostly Sicilian) and traffic and parking in the public lot nearly impossible. We got our car into a space and then walked our wheeled luggage uphill to the hotel. Dinner in hotel restaurant was good and breakfast croissants excellent. When we left, we rolled the bags down the hill to the perking area, rather than try to navigate the narrow streets in our too large Fiat SUV.

I mentioned "Sicilian charm" in the title but actually Erice is a country all on its own. 750 metres above sea level, it seems to be floating above the clouds. The people are definitely eccentric, and set apart from the rest of the world! I found Hotel Moderno and its owners to be quirky, and trying their best, but the rest of my party were not impressed. They found the breakfast to be sparse, the rooms to be cold (but hey, it's February!) and the dinner nothing to write home about. Repair around the hotel are of the "Heath Robinson" variety, and the winter dampness causes doors to stick. You get the feeling that Erice inhabitants don't really like outsiders, but are forced to welcome them, to make a living. But if you must visit this eagle's nest in winter, what do you expect?

Run by a family that live on the premises, this is a small and friendly hotel, with a nice restaurant. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the main street (Vittorio Emanuele), but by evening the day-trippers are gone, and it was very quiet. There is a roof-top deck which seems quite lovely, but October at that altitude gets too chilly to spend much time there. Our first evening the fog set in, and we felt like we may have been the only people in all of Sicily. Hotel Moderno is centrally located, and everything is easily reached from this hotel. We learned a lot about Erice's history from one of the employees, Annamaria (whose English is impeccable!), and we would definitely stay here again. Erice is a splendid place.

Room Tip: We were very pleased with our room, which was above the dining room.
