“Decent value for money, but not a great place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2013

We stayed for a week in this hotel, for a ski trip. Upon arrival we were unpleasantly surprised with the welcoming at the reception, since we arrived at around 11am and we were told the room can be ready at 4pm...eventually we got it in about 2 hours, but the initial attitude of the staff was not friendly.
Pluses in this hotel:
- we liked the room, but be ware of the room you book! we had a superior triple room, which was spacious and nicely furbished, however our friends had a standard room in the old part of the hotel which does not deserve a 4 star rating, it was small and not nice, although recently renovated.
- we also liked the wellness area, the pool is large although water rather cold. They also have a small outdoor pool. I have got a massage and a beauty treatment, both were very good.
- ski equipment is delivered directly to the hotel from the rental shops they have arrangements with, same at departure, we found this very convenient
- seems to be a child friendly hotel, although our child is 10 years old and didn't try the kids club.

What we didn't like:
- quality of food is at best average, both for breakfast and dinner. There is a kids menu, but we only found out after a couple of days that you actually have to pre-order for the next day, the waiter failed to explain this. The restaurant area is large and crowded, feels a bit like a cantine.
- reception and lobby area is rather ugly, with some dated furniture, as opposed to the newer wing, which is much better
- you have to pay for various things which in most other 4* hotels come for free: wiFi 30 eur for the week, renting bothrobes, slippers, deposit for additional keys, indoor garage.
- location is not close to the ski slopes, there is a shuttle bus which takes you there for free between 8.30-10.30 and back from 2.30-5pm, however it gets crowded at peak hours and you have to wait. A public ski bus goes by in front of the hotel, you have to pay 2 eur for the day.
- there is some entertainment but we found it low quality and some shows in the theatre were loud until 11pm or so, we were hearing it in our room.

Overall, we didn't feel real customer orientation in this hotel, staff is hard working but you can feel this is not a very well managed hotel, with the customer in mind. Just a little example: we asked for the internet card and asked to put the price on the room bill. This was not ok, then we asked to have the card and we will bring the money in 5 mins, this was also not acceptable, but mostly I was annoyed by the attitude of the receptionist. We found a much better attitude and customer care in smaller hotels, which are family run. This is a quite large hotel and feels like it. All in all, it is not a terrible place, but also not one that we would return to.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the new wing, the old part of the hotel doesn't really deserve a 4* rating. It...

We just spent 7 nights at Hotel Greif in Corvara. We booked our ski trip a bit late this year so didn't have a lot of options at the time we booked. We had an absolutely fabulous week of skiing but while the Hotel Grief was certainly more than adequate but I probably would not opt to go there again.
The pros:
-a gorgeous setting with the mountains just behind us,
-dear regularly crossing the field just outside our room,
-a spacious and clean room with plenty of storage space,
-plenty of food - some delicious and some less so,
-in floor heating in the bathrooms,
-fantastically effective ski boot drying racks (those these were full to overflowing so not everyone's boots got on them),
-free shuttle bus, and
-the majority of the staff were super hard working and very friendly.
The cons:
-loud music played each night until around 11pm,
-our room was overheated and there was no way to adjust this,
-the hotel is located a little ways out of town and while an easy walk most of the time - after a long day of skiing and in ski boots it's just a little too far to walk it with kids and the free shuttle bus filled up quickly and some of the other hotel patrons were insistent at pushing in and so those of us less skilled at the art of pushing in were left behind on a couple of occasions after having been waiting much longer than those who got on
-parking under ground was an extra EUR 9 per night
-to have a second room key was EUR 5 (surely two rooms keys is standard these days?)
-wifi was an extra charge

I spent a week in Grief with my daughter as a part of large ski group.
The hotel location is reasonable but not great for ski (the hotel offers car shuttle for free). The staff is very friendly, even for such a large (and sometimes loud group). The rooms are very convenient. Clean, average size, with good beds. We had twin bed room with bath/shower . The only thing we missed is better facility to dry ski clothes.
We didn’t use a spa, only went to swim few times. The pool is nice but a little bit cold. The staff is OK. Be aware that swimming cups are compulsory.
The entertainment inside the hotel is very modest (bar, music etc.) Corvara is VERY quiet little town and there is no bars etc. open after 8 p.m. Under these conditions, I would expect a hotel to offer a bit more fun inside.
The ski room is good and large – most of the time there were no shortage for boot drying places. Storage for ski is also OK, no missing equipment.
The only issues we had is the food. The breakfast is very poor organized for such a big group going out at the same time. No clean tables, the food is running out very quick. Juices is an issue, even simple still water might be not available. The dinners were reasonable, although some people found the food disgusting. We were OK with the dishes, but it is defiantly not what I would expect from 4* hotel.
As an average, we enjoyed the vacation

Room Tip: If you are not picky with food - good value for money

The Greif is probably thw only Hotel we regularly go back to every year.
The reasons are the following:
- very spacious rooms and tastefully furnished
- excellent facilities for families, their super friendly miniclub Staff takes the children to the slopes in the morning and the they collect them and take them back to the Hotel, feed them @ lunch in the main restaurant and let them play in the afternoon. As a result parents can really enjoy their skiing without any problems whatsover.
- ok the Hotel is not right on the slopes but they have an efficient skibus that takes literally 5 mins to get there and just outside the main entrance you will also find the bus stop for the local Corvara Ski Bus, free for all the Hotel's clients.
- Food in the restaurant is delicious with always a good choice at Breakfast and Dinner.
- Staff, they treat you like family, remember you every year and will do anything to please you. I must have emailed poor Francesca @ reception with all sorts of requests so many times and she has always been extremely helpful.
- There is a very good Spa where the 2 girls are excellent masseuses and give also a very good choice of other treatments.
- The Swimming Pool, children simply love it!

We stayed as a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children) in this hotel during Dec/11 with a group of about 150 people. The Ski was terrific and the transportation (hotel's and Corvara busses) was very good with frequent buses to the lifts.

Room was spacious and very clean and service was good. The downsides were: Ski room was very small and crammed and it was very hard in the morning to wear the ski boots and get the equipment.

The breakfast was reasonable, but the dining room staff was unaccustomed to such big groups and it took some time (about 5-10 minutes) to get a table in the morning. The dinner wasn't so good, the dishes were plain and uninspired, even compared to the pizzas and pastas on the pistes and peaks.

My wife was very happy about the massage she had.

All in all, reasonable hotel, but could be significantly improved if the food quality improves.

We have just come back from a skiing week in the lovely Dolomites in north east Italy and stayed in the 4 stars Greif Hotel.
The place is not the tiny old fashioned boutique hotel one would imagine but is just the right compromise between modern and spacious hotel and charming traditional dècor.
The minute we walked into our family suite superior we knew we'd made the right choice and a special thank you goes to Salvatore Novelli, our room manager, for having advised such a room. The sitting room was huge (one of the sofa beds had been opened up for one of our children while the other one was sleeping in a cot (at no extra price), there was a main bathroom and a second toilet, a dressing room and a master bedroom.
The Hotel has been refurbished in summer 2009 with a tasteful choice of local woods and fabrics.
The restaurant is excellent, we stayed on a half board basis. Breakfast is very good with a decent not huge selection but it has to be said that the quality is very high. There is also a corner with gluten and dairy free products which is great for people with intolerances.
For dinner there's a buffet selection for the starters and desserts, while first and second course are à la carte. Again the selection was just right (you didn't feel overwhelmed by food) and the quality was always very high, some of the dishes were truly amazing in both their simplicity and taste.
The biggest plus of the Hotel is the indoor swimming pool, really nice with an outdoor area as well, but if you are looking for a quiet swim avoid the Italian skiing holiday week (usually 3rd week of February) as the place fills up with children.
There is a really nice Spa and a Children Miniclub and a bus shuttle that will take skiiers from the morning to the afternoon back and forth from the the slopes.
We were extremely happy with our choice and will surely go back to the Greif again.
