“Superb!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2012

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Menardi for a week as part of a group ski trip to Cortina. It is a charming, older, family-run hotel that has been impeccably maintained and kept up to date. You'll fall in love with it's homey character and details -- no synthetic, chain-hotel experience here. The Menardi earns the highest rating from us.

The hotel is located on the north end of Cortina -- about a fifteen minute walk to the core of downtown. This could be construed as a negative or positive depending on your perspective. There is a wonderful pedestrian way (old railroad right-of-way) right behind the hotel. This made for pleasant walks to downtown and an opportunity to savor the gorgeous mountain scenery. It's lit at night. The is also hourly local bus service between the hotel and town, with a stop right in front of the hotel. For summer travelers there's a park-like area behind the hotel to enjoy the alpine setting.

The rooms were not large, but were very cozy, very tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. Each one was unique. Some had older folk art painted furniture and headboards. Others had gorgeous, wood-paneled, barrel-vaulted ceilings or carved ceiling medallions and other carved woodwork. Our bathroom was large, full-tiled, spotless and had a towel heater, which was a welcome luxury for us. It appears that all rooms have mountain views. Our room on the back side of the hotel was very quiet, unlike our standard experience with American cell-blocks. The shutters were closed at night. This provided the darkest room experience we've ever had at a hotel; there was no ambient light to deal with during the night.

There are multiple lounge areas on the first floor -- each one different and very inviting. One features a small bar with an adjoining fireplace room tastefully decorated with antiques.

The pictures on the Menardi's web site give an accurate portrayal of the place.

We were impressed as could be about the quality of the food and food service we enjoyed during our stay. Morning fare for our group consisted of a breakfast buffet that was more continental in its offerings. For dinner we had three-course meals with choices of four starters, main dishes and an assortment of desserts. I don't know if this is standard practice for those who opt for half board accommodation or something that was tailored for our group. Every night the menu changed. The menus offered variety and our vegetarian friends raved about the on-menu fare they chose. Cuisine includes regional dishes incorporating game and local specialties. Don't expect hamburgers, steak and fried chicken. Portions were right-sized, so we had room for dessert. Every dish was wonderful. The food was creative and presentation was excellent. To top it off, the staff in the dining room were first-rate professionals: attentive, accommodating and pleasant.

To echo that last remark, the staff at the front desk (the Menardi family) were first-rate as well, helping us plan daily itineraries, including negotiating the local and regional transport services, providing restaurant recommendations for lunch, etc. They really know their stuff.

We would return in an instant!!!

My wife and I stayed at this establishment in January 2012 during a week in Cortina d'Ampezzo. I highly recommend this hotel. In my opinion, everything is perfect with this hotel inclusive of the front desk, dining room staff and food preparers, and cleaning staff. The room was most comfortable, clean and spacious. The food was prepared with care and the service by the waitresses was pure professional.

Room Tip: We stayed in the front of the building and had no problem with traffic noise. Every night someone cl...

We returned to the Menardi after staying there 12 years ago and we were pleasantly surprised it had the same charm for us as our earlier stay. The hotel is filled with antiques and collections that date back many years. Always something of interest as we roamed through the hotel. Positives: Excellent service throughout our stay. The rooms have more than ample space, were clean with lots of storage. Rooms have old style tub hand held showers and those with head high showers with glass doors. Be sure to request your choice. Great sitting areas inside and on the back lawn. Above average breakfast. Ample and free parking. Excellent value. Negatives: Front facing rooms are right above a busy road. The hotel is about a twenty minute walk from the center of town but if you walk there is a beautiful walking / bike path directly behind the hotel that will take you right into town. We remembered an excellent meal from our previous trip but our four dinners at the hotel were the worse of our three week trip. We were very disappointed and wondered if it was just an off night. The positives far out weighed the negatives and we had one of our favorite stays of the trip at the Menardi

We stayed overnight at the Menardi whilst touring Europe and it was probably the nicest hotel of the trip. Spotlessly clean throughout, beautifully decorated and with friendly and welcoming staff. It is a bit of a walk to the town centre, but there is a gently sloping path at the rear of the hotel to take you there and back - about a 10-15 minute amble each way. The bed in the room was very comfortable and we both slept like logs.

Breakfast was included and was an outstanding spread - cereals, fruit, cold cuts as well as eggs and bacon. As well as the normal tea/coffee choice, hot chocolate was on offer which made my wife's eyes light up.. and very good it was too, apparently. I've just asked her for her opinion and her take on it is "sinful.. I could feel it going straight on my hips". High praise, indeed..

We'd both be happy to go back to the Menardi for an extended stay.

I went back to this hotel because my husband and I had been there about 4 years ago and loved it.
It was just how I remembered it and although it was nice enough and our stay was good, it did not live up to our very first stay there.
When we arrived we were given a room number. When we went to get our case from the car, the receptionist had changed his mind and gave us a different room. When we got to it, it was small. My husband is 6'4" and about the same wide and he swamped the room. I immediately asked for a bigger room and was given a choice of two. Although we settled on one of them, it was certainly nothing like the one we originally had on our very first visit there.
It's a clean and friendly hotel. The staff were brilliant and we ate there on our last night and the food was fantastic.
If we did go back and I chose this hotel again, I would definately make sure we got a room like the one we had on our very first visit there otherwise we would chose a different hotel.

We stayed during summertime 2009 celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and enjoyed our stay very much. We connected with friends who were also traveling through Europe, and joined us for a night.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but clean. The hotel restaurant was excellent - we ate dinner there every night. Although we could see Tofana from our room, next time we will request the opposite side of the hotel (away from the highway).

The walking path out back led you to the city (and had great views of the mountains). We took the gondola ride to top of La Tofana (11,000ft) and drove through the Dolomites (Lago Misurina, and San Candido). During the drive, we stumbled upon Monte Piana War Cemetery - a WWI cemetery located on SS51 between Cortina and Dobbiaco.

Since we were traveling in August, we so appreciated the cooler weather here than in Venice.

We highly recommend the Menardi Hotel, and hope to visit again soon.

Enjoyed our stay at the Menardi. We booked at room overlooking the garden which and it was very quiet away from the road. Room was comfortable and clean. Best feature was the guy on the front desk who was extremely helpful and even planned our walks for us.
