“Nowhere near 5 stars ...”
Reviewed February 28, 2014

This hotel may have deserved a 5-star rating at some time in the past, but it doesn't come close to meriting such a rating today. I understand the hotel has been renovated within the past several years so there is no excuse for fundamental deficiencies. The walls are paper-thin and one can hear snoring from the adjacent room. The bathrooms don't have exhaust fans (one can open the window, but it then makes the bathroom chilly in winter months). Most importantly, the hotel's wifi service operates in a most bizarre and random fashion; not only does it kick you off the system within several minutes of signing on, but it forces you to re-enter a hotel-generated password and user-name every time you wish to re-join the system. It is truly a useless service that alone should cause one to question the hotel's apparent 5-star status.
We had breakfast at the hotel every morning. By European 2 and 3-star standards, the breakfast was marginal. The usual cold cuts were constantly in short supply. The toaster required three cracks at a piece of bread to convert it to toast. The juice was, with the exception of a small jug of OJ that was surreptitiously placed beside larger juice containers, made from concentrate. I have stayed at 3-star hotels in Switzerland, France, Amsterdam and Hamburg that would put this breakfast effort to shame.
The staff were pleasant and helpful, although not inclined to make any extra effort. As an example, we asked the concierge to make a lunch reservation at a restaurant on the ski slopes. We arrived at the appointed hour and were told the restaurant didn't accept reservations AND that the restaurant had explicitly explained that to the concierge when he called the previous day. One would think that a committed concierge would inform his guests that reservations weren't possible; instead, silence.
Cortina is obviously stunningly beautiful, and the hotel is well-situated. But anybody expecting a 5-star experience would be wise to temper his or her expectations. The hotel is riding on past glories and the WiFi frustrations will preclude a return for us.

My family's February 2014 stay was our third ski holiday at the Savoia. We think this is an excellent hotel on every level. This is a beautiful, historical, character building which was totally modernised in 2009. The service culture is first class - all staff law at helpful, respectful and competent. The rooms are lovely - we book the corner Superior + Comfort rooms which can be connected to produce a two room suite. The spa is a great amenity. The whole place is spotless.

The hotel is maybe 100 metres from the main shopping street called Corsa Italia.
The ski bus stops right outside with the nearest cable car - Faloria - three mins by bus, or a 10 minute walk. We also always use the hotel's own ski shop franchise which is competitively priced, uncongested and convenient.

The breakfast is very good with bacon and eggs cooked to order. We took the half board option for the first time this year - the evening menu is simple - maybe four or five dishes - but is freshly cooked. There is a good pizza restaurant right next to the hotel, but we find the best eat-out option to be Restaurante 5 Torri - just off the main drag.

When I travel with my family I don't mind five star prices - as long as I get a five star service. In this respect Savoia is both good value for money - and deservedly earns its five stars.

Room Tip: The corner Superior + Comfort rooms can be connected to produce a two room suite.

Our short cut stay at the Grand Hotel Savoia was very disappointing! We do understand that a snow storm and the technical difficulties due to the storm are out of the control of the Hotel, but the staff was not even trying to resolve any issues. To us, an internet connection is very important (amongst other things) and we were promised a wifi router for a few days. Once we decided to check out 11 days early, suddenly an internet router became available. Guiseppe at the front desk confirmed a full refund for all unused nights, but a week later, the Reservation manager Rosanna Conti declined the refund. Now 6 weeks later, we have received a partial refund, but would like to hold them to their promise. Certainly, not what we expect of a 5* Hotel.

Dear Sirs, referring to your message we would like to let you know that we’ve made all our best to meet your needs during your short stay at the Grand Hotel Savoia and we would like assure you about that. As you know, Cortina and consequently our hotel had some inconvenience due to the blackout but, in our opinion, it was not so serious to justify your early departure.
We have an Agreement with the TO who took care of your reservation but actually we think that you do not know how things have gone. We have guaranteed the TO all our cooperation in this matter and, as gesture of good will, we’ve put them in condition to meet your request and to find the better solution for all of us considering the mutual cooperation between the parts.
With best regards

Walls paper thin, rooms noisey. Spa cleanliness was poor, when we offered feedback to the management they negated any responsibility for the spa and said it was under separate management. Service at the bar was terrible. The crockery was chipped. If you are unlucky enough to book here dont hire skis at the hotel. Get them at the slopes, will save you a load of agro. Breakfast was pretty good. I wouldnt recommend this hotel to anyone I like.

In 2013 we stayed in top hotels in Hawaii, Aspen, Santiago, Istanbul, Sydney , New Zealand and Paris. Some with kids some without. Without a doubt this was the most disappointing hotel of a great year of travel.
Cortina is fantastic, the scenery, the skiing, the town and restaurants all fabulous. Just don't stay here.
Basically the place lacked hospitality. There was a feeling that we were somehow intruding on the locals holiday.
The location of the hotel is great for walking the Corso Italia and shopping but not walking distance to any ski lift or Godola if you are in ski boots.
We booked two adjoining rooms but the hotel refused to guarantee this until we arrived. I'm not sure why this would be, parents want to be near their kids.
The rooms were nice, a modern look with polished wood floor. Unfortunately this meant the beds slid around a lot on casters if you sat up to read. The bathrooms were lovely and housekeeping excellent. We went and bought a $15 kettle from an electrical store so we could make a cup of tea in the room (I thought tea/coffee was a requirement of 5star status but maybe not in Italy) the thermostat in the rooms didn't work so we had to keep the windows open all night. The heavy machinery shifting snow all night was very noisy as a result.
The Ski shop in the basement was great (a separate business I think) good gear and friendly guys. Too cold to dry out boots so we took them up to the rooms each night. The ski school booked by the hotel for our kids was overall poor. They on multiple occasions were late picking up the kids in the ski bus, left our kids on the mountain one day as there was no room for them in the bus and cancelled snowboard lessons for my son one night at 8pm because he was going to be the only one in the lesson. My daughters were very happy with their instructor. There are many ski schools in Cortina and I would recommend doing independent research on this.
As a top hotel in a major ski resort I would have thought a hotel ski shuttle service would be good.
The spa was nice but children under 16 banned from the hot tub and my older daughters were sent away as they were not accompanied by their parents. The hotel bar very slow service.
The most disappointing aspect was how unhelpful the concierge staff were in booking restaurants. Any request I made I was told the restaurant was all booked out. It was a busy time of year and there was no possibility of getting a booking. One night they sent us to a restaurant in their affiliated hotel down the valley then tried to send us again the next night. I managed to book all the best restaurants we wanted to go to myself in some cases immediately after being told it was not possible by concierge staff.
Overall a poor experience and not recommended .

The location, rooms, lounge, breakfast, spa, pool of the hotel are exceptional. This is in contrast to many of the hotels in Cortina who are very dated. While the facilities are 5*, the service is 3* star at best, with the value for money rating in the cellar. The staff individually are nice, but it just doesn't work... the wifi is intermittent ("try again tomorrow"), good luck ordering at the bar in a timely fashion and get your own car from the garage if the staff is too busy... besides the fact that -maybe as an incredible coincidence- my Amex card was cloned in Italy within 24hrs of giving it to the hotel and at checkout I was shocked to be asked to re-charge the deposit with the new card, for their accounting convenience. The customer comes second, third or fourth here... shame!
