Hotel Miramare
Ranked #17 of 39 Civitavecchia B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 26, 2013

Pre-cruise we stayed at Hotel Miramare. This is an old traditional hotel very near the railway station. Since we had previously visited Rome several times we decided on going straight to the port this time.

Taking the train to Civitavecchia from the airport is easy. You buy a ticket for the whole distance, get on the train at the airport and change at Trastevere. The only challenge is that there is little space for your luggage so you either end up taking 4 seats for 2 people or staying out in the passage way.

Check-in at the hotel went smoothly and they were ever so friendly. We were given a map and lots of advice about where to go and what to see. We were on the top floor and had an amazing sea view.

Our room (or should I say 2 rooms) was large and clean. The furniture was basic - and the bed a little on the hard side. The only thing we were worried about was that there seemed to be no fire alarm in the room (the wires were not attatched to anything)

Breakfast was Ok - quite Italian with a lot of pre-packaged sweet cakes. I prefer plain toast and marmelade. The coffees were really good.

Next day we could have taken a taxi with other passengers to the port - but decided to walk with our luggage which took about 15 minutes to the port bus.

Would we stay there again - it depends. If going to Civitavecchia, yes. However - another time, we will probably book a hotel in Trastevere. That way we have the easy access by train to the port, combined with the benifits of being in Rome. Civitavecchia does not have much to offer. The shops are really expensive, the restaurants average and not much too do there.

I think the hotel deserves at 3.5 rating - but the choice is 3 or 4

A perfect choice for a pre or post cruise stopover. We were so glad we chose this Hotel and not one of the larger ones on the main promenade. Friendly staff, great seafront location and spotlessly clean. Pleasant 5/10 minute walk to shops etc. We ate at a restaurant close by rather than walk to town. We shared a shuttle to the ship with other cruisers, which was organised by Reception. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Seafront room with balcony!

We stayed there for 2 nights in mid-May before our cruise. At the front desk, we had very useful and friendly advices from Gianny. He took the time to explain how things work in Italy. Every time we walked in, he would greet us personally and his recommendations for activities and restaurants were excellent.
The hotel is near the train station (walking distance) and about 5-10 minutes’ walk to the port's main gate. The ocean view from our room was stunning. A little noisy in the evening. The continental breakfast was excellent and the lady serving the cappuccinos always had a nice smile.
We would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Ocean view is a must.

Stayed here 1 night prior to taking a cruise. Location is great, near the downtown core, right on the waterfront, close to many restaurants, very clean and Gianni was very helpful and friendly. Would defintely stay there again and would recommend. Stayed on June 22, 1013.

This is a lovely traditional Italian hotel. Stayed one night after arriving from Venice by train in the pouring rain.
The hotel is opposite the station and and easy walk with luggage. The hotel organised a shuttle for those who wanted it the next day (Thank you Gianni). I think it was 6 euros paid to the driver and dropped off right at the ship not the port entrance.

We had planned to have dinner in the hotel but there was a private function that night so we had to go out to eat.

There is a small elevator, one person at a time with luggage but it did the trick.

Lovely sea view and room nicely decorated and spotless.

Continental breakfast but lots of it and it did the trick, included in rate. Loved the apricot jam.

Would love to stay there again.

I booked two rooms for one night prior to our cruise. I had previously e mailed the hotel asking for a sea view. When we arrived at 1.30pm, check in was completed within a couple of minutes. Our rooms were superb. Spotlessly clean, large,(one had two rooms) both had amazing sea views overlooking the boardwalk (grazie mile Gianni).

We watched both subset and sunrise from the balcony - simply beautiful.

The hotel is a 10 minute (flat) walk from the port bus pick area - you won't need a taxi unless your infirm.

Yes there is some noise in the evening from the boardwalk, but that is typical in a Mediterranean town and it was mostly families enjoying a Saturday evening - we embraced it and slept with the French windows open - and I'm a light sleeper.

There are several nice restaurants within 2 mins walk.

Overall I would highly recommend this hotel - the staff are welcoming, happy, engaging and speak great English, the rooms are clean, with great views - I would return without a second thought.

A brilliant start to a holiday!

We had made a one night reservation for our pre-cruise stopover. Due to bad weather all over Italy at
that time we ended up staying here for a total of 3 nights. The entrance way and lobby area definitely need some updating and that can be a "turn off" when first entering; but as the title says don't judge this place by its cover. The receptionists, Luigi and Gianni, were both very pleasant and helpful. The actual rooms are pretty decent. Most are 2 room suites and are of a good size. The bed was great as were the towels. We had a working mini fridge to store our wines in. The bathrooms are re-done and are just as shown in the photos. Plenty of hot water and clean. The weather was quite cold during our stay and we had working heat in the room with our own thermostat. The location is fantastic. Just across from the train station, a reasonable walk to the Port entrance and pretty decent restaurants within walking distance. They also have a small parking lot on the premises. We took the train to Rome for a day and it was simple and direct. There was no street noise and we slept soundly each night.

There is a restaurant in the hotel where we were served a great breakfast each day. The usual ham and cheese, cereal, yogurt and the greatest croissants accompanied by good fresh brewed coffees.
