Who knew that such delightful places still existed? For some reason, there was not another tourist in sight, and we felt we had genuiney returned to Italy as it once was. The look and eel of the whole place puts a smile on your face

“Even with poor service, DeFilla is worth the visit”
Reviewed August 21, 2009

Granted the service can be rude, but it depends on the night. This restaurant is just too well located, has great hours and atmosphere, that we were there 3 of our 7 days in Chiavari. We actually went back to capture a photo of the rude waiter (and force him to crack a smile), but instead we were served by the most amazing professional! Now, we will make a point of going when he is working.

Not only is DeFilla the most beautiful store to pick up sweets, kitchen ceramics, spirits and wine, but on most summer nights there is a singer accompanying his electronic piano on the patio -- while locals and tourists devour the gelato and cocktails. With the right server, you can order drinks and eat muchies until late in the night! The stracciatella or grapefruit gelatos are incredible!

There is a restaurant 'Enoteca' next door, but it was closed the night we were interested.

“Treated Rudely Worst in Italy”
Reviewed May 7, 2009

We were in Italy last week for my husband's birthday. We read about Defilla in a local restaurant book. Went in the afternoon and had a glass of wine in the lovely bar area and walked the shop. The bar staff spoke English and described the attached front restaurant that was open in the evening. The restaurant looked like a library for wines. It was our first night in the region and we were beginning to celebrate my husband's birthday. So we spent the afternoon wandering lovely Chiavari waiting for the restaurant to open.

We returned excited about the evening and our first Ligurian meal. The waiter came to our table and asked if we wanted water. We told him yes tap water 'Rubinetto', he brought us a bottle of mineral water and we again said "tap is fine--Rubinetto; no bottled water". The waiter glared and walked away leaving the bottled water. So we sat for 10 minutes with no service. We waived him down and said we wanted to have dinner to which he replied "So?" We were perplexed and asked for a menu and he began speaking quickly in Italian. If you're like most people that don't speak the language, you can decipher the written word but but trying to decipher someone talking quickly is nearly impossible.

We again asked for the menu, he said there wasn't one and walked away. We sat alone again at the table. After 10 more minutes we tried to get his attention, he walked past us and said very loudly to the table next to us: "Why should Americans come to Italy and not speak Italian!"

We got up and went to the front bar-cafe and explained that the waiter was horribly rude. The bar area was kind but said "yes he is very rude." Clearly the restaurant owners think this behavior is acceptable. We were horrified and frankly hurt by our first experience in the Italian Riveria.

We left and went to Il Portico where we explained that our Italian was poor but we had our transalation book. The owner said kindly " put away your book I'll take of you" and he did.

Don't even consider Defilla's evening restaurant if you're a tourist--they don't want you there. Don't miss Luchin it's the city's true star and Il Portico is a very special romantic evening with outstanding seafood.
