“Relaxing Getaway”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

We stayed at L'Andana as a stopover in Tuscany between Rome and Florence. It was a bit off the beaten path, but it was completely worth the trip. The hotel doesn't quite exlain this well, but because it is in such a remote location, it is very difficult to call your own taxi or cab. Therefore, the hotel arranges a car service for a nominal extra fee. At first we didn't understand this, so we tried to call our own cab. It ended up being the same price and we had to wait some time for the cab to arrive. For the convenience and comfort of a nice transport vehicle, just let the hotel arrange the car service. Also, another warning, if you're planning to stay several days and are usually very active, there are only limited activities to do. We enjoyed the complimentary driving range and putting greens, tennis, wine tasting, and biking. The coutryside is breathtaking and the beautiful grounds for the estate were immaculate. The hotel service was attentive, but not overly intrusive, and the food was divine (although pricey). We had some of our best italian meals on the property. Thank you, L'Andana for a memorable and relaxing stay!

Room Tip: Get a room facing the pool. You will have a breathtaking view of the Tuscan sunset over the rolling...

Great location and good staff, everything was a bit pretentious. The spa facilities were not extensive and the service was delayed sometimes. A high price to pay for the food and we kind of got the impression that this was because there were no other facilities near by. Extortion ? All in all a purpose built hotel to generate high income in a great setting.

We stayed for 2 nights in one of the most beautiful suites we've ever seen. The grounds and property are gorgeous . The service was immaculate. I think our room was made up 3 or 4 times a day. We loved the spa, and pool. Breakfast was delicious. We enjoyed dinner, the food was excellent with an excellent wine list that was fairly priced. The bar had a great selections of grappas and after dinner drinks. Hotel is situated in beautiful Maremma region of Tuscany. Pretty much a perfect hotel!

I just finished a three night stay here. As others have noted, the grounds and the rooms are exceptional. The front desk staff has great suggestions for restaurants, things to do and beaches to visit. They made you feel very welcome and in fact we were upgraded to a deluxe room overlooking the vineyards. We did not use the spa for massage but it is adequate with a sauna and a jacuzzi.
The vineyard shops sell the same olive oil at 50% below the hotel price! That was incredulous. The only reason we found out about this was we went to buy a small bottle of olive oil. They had an old faded one and as it was a present we did not purchase it at the hotel. We decided to walk over to the wine shop and it was much lower in price.
The restaurant: I thought it was average and we all agreed overpriced for the quality of food served. I don't think Alain Ducase has visited this place more than once a year. But no problems, go to the front desk and they have some forest suggestions. Go to Oasi for a meal of your lifetime.
Breakfast was ok with the eggs cooked to order but they did not have many choices for a vegetable omelette. I would say average in the food category.
The only complaint I have is the Internet service in both the rooms we had was disappointing for the price one pays for the rooms. Management most certainly needs to install boosters on every corner as the walls are solid concrete.
I would definitely return for some peace and tranquility and to slow down and enjoy the Tuscan sun.

If there was a book about place and hotels you have to go to Italy before you go to the better world, andana has to be in the list. I always thought that Tuscany doesn't need luxury hotels since it is a stunning place itself. Well I changed my mind. Andana is a perfect fit to the beauties of maremma. The location is simply beautiful and allows a lot of nice road trips to punta ala, grosseto and to the beautiful neighbours.the food is terrific indeed . I was convinced to go to andana by French and English friends here in London , I was reluctant since I believed that we didn't need any ducasse venue in Tuscany. I ended up getting married at andana.. More serious appreciation of the place than this it cannot be. The managers are extremely helpful and kind and they make you feel like you are at home , the service both at the hotel and at the restaurant is impeccable. A must go hotel! Ps. September and October are magic months to go there

If you wish to practice your Italian, L'Andana is the perfect place. I've lost count of how many times I've had to order exactly the same thing before it finally arrives...

The positives...the buildings and surrounds are beautiful - authentic Tuscan. The lawns are perhaps too manicured if anything...out of keeping with the faded glory of the rest of L'Andana.

And that's about it.

The key to any great hotel experience is the service and the food - and its on this count that L'Andana falls short of many much more modest hotels. On the basis of breakfast service we cancelled our dinner reservation. The staff lurk in a warren of back rooms, appearing only to deliver an occasional order whilst steadfastly avoiding eye contact which might lead to them actually having to speak to a guest. We seated ourselves. A waiter asked for our order without any indication of what we could order - no mention of where the breakfast buffet was located.

The coffee was the worst I've had in Italy - a cappuccino prepared with filter coffee and milk - and took several asks before it arrived. Whilst eating we were accosted by patrolling Personal Trainers. I do not expect my breakfast to be used as an opportunity to make a sales pitch.

The rooms themselves are devoid of any character or personality - awful drapes, vintage technology, random aging magazines on the shelves. The most amusing 'Beauty Kit' in the bathroom (seriously, a little cardboard box containing two shower caps, three cotton wool pads and six cotton buds...it did at least provide a few moments entertainment)

The bottom line is that within a few hours of arriving we tried to cut short our reservation - it is a parody of a luxury hotel with a feeling that extorting money from guests who fall for the faded charm of the building's fabric and the beautiful Tuscan location is the key driver at L'Andana. It has the air of a sanitarium at times where permission to leave must be granted - before the red T-shirted Personal Trainers/Guards fold an arm behind your back and march you back into the building. Unless you have a hole in your life that can only be filled by plastic shower caps then L'Andana is best avoided. Life is short and there are too many truly great hotels to waste your time in distinctly average ones. Do not fall for the charm of the promotional images - that is just Tuscany - it is not L'Andana.

We stopped for 4 nights in a junior suite. The estate is stunning and huge - lots of vineyards surrounding the main house and picturesque gardens with paths lined with lavender and rosemary and many other herbs, which have the effect of waking your taste buds as you walk from the main house to the restaurant, which is a separate building about 200m away.
The room had a good sized bed and the enormous bathroom had a wonderfully over-sized shower area. This was a really stunning bathroom! The lack of any outside space from your room was noticeable - there are no terraces. The choice was to laze by one of the two beautiful pools, although the second one also involved a little walk.
The service at the front desk was excellent, really friendly and very helpful.

So why not 5 stars? Well the amazing thing here is that the restaurant lets the rest of the establishment down. As it's owned by Alain Ducasse you imagine this will be the strength, and maybe we were expecting something more special than we were given. All the food we had was in the "nice" category, more an international take on Italian than authentic natural Italian flavours. There was a hint of blandness in some dishes. Perhaps it's because there was a heat wave and it was 35 degrees even at 8pm, that meant the service was also sadly subdued. And the sommelier tried to convince me that a wine which was pinot bianco was 100% chardonnay. Very odd.

But back at the hotel itself, what you get is an amazing location and the chance to either laze around in the grounds, use the wonderful spa, explore the coast or sit under a tree reading your book etc. It is a luxurious location, shame the food doesn't quite hit the high notes.
