“The Grand Dame of great hotels still lives up to its reputation”
Reviewed September 3, 2009

Sitting on the shores of lake Como with beautiful grounds, villa, and rooms the Villa d'Este lives up to its reputation as one of the finest hotels in the world. The kitchen and it's many dining locations throughout the grounds all have fabulous food, and the freshly made daily "past del giorno" specials for lunch on the terrace by the pool is never to be missed. The hotel was rated the best hotel in the world by Forbes in 2009 and the reason it was able to separate itself from the crowd is the staff, they are truly wonderful. Sitting out by the pool, which floats in the lake, is about as good as it gets. Side trips on a boat to the towns surrounding lake Como to dine and site-see are a great idea.

It is one of the great hotels of the world. The rooms are beautiful, the staff exceptional and the lake magnificent. It really doesn't get much better than this.

The estate is beautiful, excellent views, but sadly the staff were very mediocre. Beginning from concierge desk: arrogant, and you felt they're not doing their job in helping you. Prices you get from them vary from what you read in hotel brochure, eg the renting boat per hour and what they tell you when u inquire.
Waiters are slow, and namy but not as efficient as you'd expect in a hotel like that. The rooms are not that great btw. The beds and pillows are very uncomfortable. In general staff cannot speak english which was surprising. The cheapest meal in the room service menu was 26 euros. All prices were 30 euros and above. Food was not that yummy, ended up eating at il Gardino and il Glicine which were far better than d'este.

For our one year anniversary, my husband and I spent 8 days at the Villa d'Este. The result was the most memorable trip either of us has taken, and a firm resolve to make Villa d'Este an habitual vacation spot together, and with our families, for many decades to come.

I would be lying if I did not admit that I was nervous about staying at Villa d'Este, despite having many friends and acquaintances recommend it as one of the best, if not their best, hotel experience. After having a disastrous stay at the Princeville Resort in Kaua'i last year, in spite of its 5 star rating and numerous recommendations, I vowed to never again stay at a hotel that did not come well recommended on Trip Advisor; as I found out after we returned from Kaua'i, many people had cautioned about the disrepair and unacceptable conditions of that hotel on this website, so I determined to use Trip Advisor as my litmus test for choosing luxury accommodations sight unseen in the future.

When January of this year rolled around, therefore, and I was starting to think about our summer holidays, I consulted Trip Advisor regarding Villa d'Este. When I read the few negative reviews about old rooms poorly kept and disappointing service, I braced myself for what could turn out to be a Princeville part two. But, as I had longed to visit Lake Como for years, we decided to take the leap...

Happily, all of my worry was for absolutely nothing. They say that Villa d'Este is a grande dame of a hotel, reminiscent of a different era. What they don't say is that this grand dame has aged with style, grace and is perfectly preserved, placing it at the pinnacle of luxury accommodations in the world. As my husband is fond of saying, a stay at Villa d'Este returns a person to the quiet, sophisticated glamour of an era that has largely passed us by. The gentle attentiveness of the staff, the exquisite public spaces (indoor and out) and the elegantly appointed apartments combine with heavenly food and indescribably beautiful views of Lake Como to make Villa d'Este a truly perfect holiday experience.

The day begins with breakfast on the terrace under an awning that casts an andalucian orange glow, protecting guests from the brightness of Como's mountainous morning sun. The buffet has offerings appealing to every palate, from the most finicky child to the most refined adult; and if one has special requests, the staff is always ready to assist. After the morning's repast, one can swim in the pools, play tennis, tour the lake or simply enjoy the grounds, sitting under an old magnolia tree reading a good book. Lunch takes place anytime from noon until five in the afternoon, depending on where one chooses to dine. And in these afternoon hours, one can again choose from a variety of activities that involve as much or as little physical activity as one is interested in at that particular time. Eventually, as the sun begins its late afternoon descent, guests repair to their quarters to prepare for dinner, and what I consider to be the most wonderful part of the day at Villa d'Este: night-time. For those that are ill-accustomed to dressing for dinner, that tradition has its place at Villa d'Este: after a long day in the sun, the ritual of preparing for a nice evening transforms an ordinary activity into a memorable experience. Whether you have reservations at The Veranda, The Grille or simply choose to have a night cap and a lighter dinner on the terrace, evenings at Villa d'Este are perfection. The cool night air, the sounds of a piano playing your favorite Rat Pack and Big Band melodies, the twinkling of lights across the lake and the sight of couples, young and old, dancing the night away are part of what makes Villa d'Este and Lake Como the most enchanting place one can be. And if you prefer to stay indoors and enjoy a game of cards, the parlor games room will not disappoint.

The two items I cannot vouch for, although I have no reason to doubt their excellence, are the fitness center and the spa. I had a nasty cold while my husband and I were at Villa d'Este, so I was not able to make use of the fitness center and lacked enthusiasm for the spa. But, I have every intention of taking advantage of them both when next we are there.

Having left no room for doubt about how much we enjoyed our stay at Villa d'Este, I can only add that it will exceed even the highest of expectations for the most discerning travelers. Villa d'Este is simply perfection.

From the moment you get to the Villa D'Este it is evident why this hotel is one of the Best in the World. My wife and I celebrated our 10th Wedding Anniversary with a 2 night stay at the Villa D'Este.

The staff from the moment we arrived was personal and attentive. Check-In also came with a quick but personal tour of the hotel on the way to the room. The room was outstanding with a wonderful view of the lake and hotel property. Large, very clean, and nicely decorated.

The hotel grounds are a stunning. You can spend hours with your camera just taking pictures around the grounds of the buildings and park like setting.

Dinner was excellent. Table right by the water on a beautiful evening. Service was terrific. Drinks after in the bar was great. A special thanks to the bartender who's name escapes me...a really nice man!

Understand that this all comes at a very steep cost even for those who are use to 5 Star prices but also understand it is truley worth every penny!

We just returned from Villa D'Este and we are having a hard time to put into words how beautiful and fabulous this hotel is. From the moment you enter the gates you realize that you are in a very special place. The grounds are magnificent and the hotel is lovely. It is nicer than any Four Seasons or Ritz in a beautiful old world way. You are surrounded by beautiful works of art, antiques, marble and grandeur.

We booked a garden view room and we were upgraded to a lake front junior suite. The views from the room were spectacular. The service was impeccable and most of the staff called us by name. As written in previous reviews, the waitstaff at the restaurants were great and as if on cue would appear to serve at the precise moment and then give us our privacy. The food was delicious. Breakfast was the best we ever had at any hotel ever. Dinners were phenominal and added to our fabulous experience. We rented a private boat for the day and enjoyed the lake and the towns of Bellagio and Verena. This was truly an unbelievable vacation and romantic getaway.
