Having read the old reviews left on here I am totally shocked!!
My wife and I have this evening returned from our break to Milan, we ventured by train to Lake Como and were simply blown away by every aspect of Villa D'este. As you drive from the station you realise the sleepiness of the area in comparison to Milan city centre, the views are breathtaking.
Maybe the other guests didn't research the property before booking, the hotel is full of antique furniture, from pictures dating back to 1902, elaborate chandeliers and in every room, original beds and wardrobes, no two rooms are alike, it adds character and charm. One drawing room was made for Napolean, although he never made it to the hotel, if you don't like classic decor then don't go, but you will be missing out. The Cardinal Suite was our favourite, best views of both the lake and gardens. We ate in the Verandah Restaurant, fine dining at its best, service impeccable and the staff cannot do enough to make your experience one to remember, in the summer months eating al fresco would be outstanding.
The facilities are incredible, from a lovely new spa, golf simulator, jogging trail, tennis courts, a squash court and three pools, one floating on the lake, and yes it as cold. Manicured grounds, the most amazing setting, lovely rooms, food to die for, loyal staff who have worked at the hotel for decades (which speaks volumes) - what more could you wish for?
If you visit Italy then please ensure Villa D'este is on your to stay list, we cannot wait to go back and also visit their sister property, Villa La Massa! A huge thank you to all the staff for making our time so special - very few hotels leave such an impressive stamp in our hearts as you have done, easily our #1 European hotel to date!!!

We were given a room in the pavillion to the side of the main hotel, which was fine. This area had its own concierge and still felt part of the hotel. The standard of the rooms is impressive, our Junior suite had a walk-in wardrobe and dressing area. The hotel's main restaurant, Vernadah, was a bit disappointing for dinner as it was not as formal as indicated, though the men do have to wear jacket and tie. The Grill restaurant was much more intimate with better service. But you can't beat breakfast on the terrace overlooking the lake watching some of those fabulous boats go by! Concierge staff were great.

we stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is lovely and dress code is not otional! The restaurant food and service is of the standard one would expect but the restaurant is somewhat large so there is no view over the lake unless you are on the top 4 ables. There are lovely walks through the grounds.

My husband and I stayed at Villa D’este for our honeymoon for 5 days, and it is by far one of the most decadent places to visit. If you are not used to luxury, brace yourself to be steeped in decadence.

Positives

• Check in was fast, professional and efficient. We had a Junior Suite in the Queen’s Pavilion with our own balcony, and we were lead to the room by our friendly concierge from the Cardinal Building, where you will need to initially check-in. Champagne and fruit bowl awaits honeymooners on arrival.

• The décor and ambiance of the hotel was grand and has an old school classic charm. Think old Hollywood or the ‘Great Gatsby.’

• A piano plays during cocktail/dinner hour. It feels like you are transported to a bygone era. This music wafts throughout the property by the Lake Como breeze.

• Dinner at any of the onsite restaurants (La Veranda and Il Grill) gives you a taste of the local cuisine and Italian hospitality. The service and quality is 5 star, so be prepared to look your best. If you order crepes, they make it in front of you, flames and all!

• If you prefer to dine inside your room, the quality of the food and service is still 5-stars. The great thing is, you can eat with your bathrobe and fluffy slippers on!

• Breakfast can be served in room as well. Well worth this option, if you have a balcony to enjoy the views. You will have your own privacy and spend better quality time with your partner.

• Breakfast at the La Verandah is also wonderful as they cater for all diets, and they remember what type of coffee and milk you have if you need to order some more. There is also champagne available if you are so inclined.

• The “Wellness Centre and Sport’ is excellent. There are the indoor and outdoor pools; the saunas, tennis courts and beauty treatments. All towels and bathrobes are provided, no need to bring the ones from your room. Try to spend at least one day getting the treatments that you would like at the spa. The centre was not overtly busy, sometimes you will literally be the only client there. So, if you would like a relaxing holiday with solitude, this is the place to be.

• The tennis courts is located high up in the Villa’s grounds, so it gives you a good vista of Lake Como. So, does the 1.5 km hike up to the ruins onsite.

Negatives

• The one striking character about the Villa’s clientele is that most patrons are old (>65 years). It’s certainly a weird feeling being a 32-year old, newly married female staying at this hotel. Half of the women were either in denial about their age - hence the cat-like plastic surgery. The other half-were younger than I, with beautiful model like figures, accompanied by old, mostly obese, obnoxious, rich men. It felt sad to feel like a minority in such a wonderful setting. The other honeymooners we saw were a welcomed sight.

• Villa D’este offers a ‘Guided boat excursion to Bellagio,’ between June and September. The lady who conducted the ride has lived in Lake Como for many years and the anecdotes she gives are gossip/tabloid driven. She has a distinct disdain for the ‘nouveau riche,’ Russian investors who buy property at Lake Como, that she claims to be driving the Italians out of the property market. The tour also has a customary stop at Bellagio (~2 hrs) for touristy traps such as ‘authentic Italian silk,’ and in front of George Clooney’s house. If you prefer something more historically driven and intelligent, best to find some other tour.

• Breakfast at La Verandah is an ‘interesting’ experience. The overarching theme of the Villa apart from the regular holidaymakers, is ‘wheeling and dealing’. You will try not to hear conversations from individuals having loud conversations about the millions they will spend about a new venture at exotic places - but its hard not to. So, if you want to relax for breakfast with your newspaper, be prepared to conjure your inner Zen.

Room Tip: • Villa D’este is a magical place and for the prices you are paying, it’s best to sample most of its...

Truly one of the greatest hotels in the world - a stunningly beautiful and historic property with stunning views and perfect service. Enjoyed every minute of our stay (one night only unfortunately but in a junior suite with lake views). Nothing is too much trouble here. Of course it is also expensive in every way, but we would spend he money again without hesitation.

I spend a few days every summer in this hotel , one of the most spectacular in the world , on the edge of lake Cuomo . The architecture is grandiose , the rooms are large , the views are magnificent , the restaurant very elegant and the service superb . The existence of a dress code like in the grand palaces of the last century completes the picture . Very expensive but worth the money . If the weatheris good , enjoy the supeb terrace for a drink or a meal or the floating swimming pool on the lake . We were a bit disappointed by the food this year but it does not change our general impression . Possibility of many excursions , by boat or otherwise . Do'nt miss the nice little village .

nice location. The building is very nicely furnished, in the Empire style. Service is very good, great! very private hotel, since no one but the customers can enter this hotel. There is a feeling of grandeur, of quietness in a luxury's world. Nice view of the lake. The room is nicely furnished, bathroom is great also with a jacuzzy bath tub.
