Reviewed April 9, 2010

I stayed here for two nights in October 2009. Having read reviews I had some idea what to expect, but for what I wanted (to see the mosaics) the location was perfect, so I thought I could put up with the rest.

I didn't find the staff as surly as some have said: but it depended on who was on duty, with some better than others. They certainly helped with anything I asked about.

The rooms are dark, but this is partly down to the location, and with a bit of care the shutters can be adjusted. Equally, the air-conditioning settings can be altered from those the hotel has as standard which makes things more pleasant.

The furniture looked like it had been bought in a job lot from Dracula's castle, but if you just take it as quirky it's not so bad. I had no trouble sleeping.

The smallness of the rooms, the old-style towels, and the absence of breakfast were real drawbacks, and overall it is over-priced. I've stayed in worse hotels, and it wasn't so bad that I thought about finding somewhere else. If there were a better hotel in that location, then of course I'd use that in preference; but as it is, it's got the best spot in the city centre and no competition close by, which is why they can get away with not caring overmuch about what anyone thinks.

I'd go again if I needed to, and let the joys of Cefalu as a place act as compensation, but this hotel could and should be so much better.

As others have stated, the rooms tend to be small and dark and the staff indifferent, even surly. The location is good and the rooftop terrace is wonderful, but I would not recommend this hotel.

We stayed here two nights in early May 2009. We have mixed feelings on this particular hotel. Some things were fabulous - such as a location right in the heart of Cefalu and on an atmospheric street...as well as a rooftop with views of the Duomo and town that are amazing. Other things were just okay, such as darkly appointed, odd sized rooms and indifferent staff members. No breakfast is served (ignore the "ristorante" in the name), but we enjoyed munching on pastries and sipping coffee around the corner on the Piazza Duomo.

Just don't miss out on the rooftop terrace views at night!

La Giara is in a good location in Cefalu, near the Duomo and the waterfront. It is a 10 minute walk to the beach.
However, the room was very dull and dated and the towels were very old and hard. The reception staff were not helpful, especially when it came to checking out. We had not been informed that they do not accept credit cards, even though they used our credit cards to secure our booking. There was a small sign in Italian explaining this, which wasn't much good to us as we speak English. Because of this, and along with the fact that 6 bank machines were out of service at the same time,we ended up missing a train to Naples(40 euro), and consequently had to book a flight costing 250 euros each.

The best thing about this hotel is its location, near the waterfront and close to the duomo. My room was a good size, with a big bed and a table, but absolutely no view and a bit dark. While comfortable enough, my general impression was of age and shabbiness. With a full tour group (28 people) in residence, the hot water wasn’t up to the morning demands.

Breakfast was a voucher for a café just below the duomo - good location, good coffee and juice, but only a croissant unless you wanted to pay extra.

We stayed 2 nights at La Giara in mid-April and had a lovely experience. We were looking for something quaint and nestled in the old city, and this is just what we got. It was a pleasant 10-15 minute walk through the historic town center to get to there from the train station, and easy to find (just follow the maps and hotel signs--they're posted in several location throughout the city). And the hotel is only about 2 blocks from the beach. We spent afternoons on the beach and evenings strolling around the old town, so the location was ideal. The manager spoke little English, but was friendly and we managed. I'm not sure if the rooftop terrace or restaurant opens only in the summer, but we were given vouchers for "breakfast" (croisant and fresh squeezed orange juice) at the cafe below the steps of the cathedral. Ideal setting, but a bit pricey (10 euros for 2) for breakfast, but its optional.

Room was very neat and clean, fairly modern, probably recently remodeled--basic set up, nothing fancy, but nice. Our "balcony" overlooked a small interior courtyard. Towels were a bit rough. We were told we couldn't pay with a credit card because the "line was down" until the bank opened. Sounds like this is either a typical problem or the usual excuse. Either way, we had to make an extra trip to the ATM to get cash to pay.

This was one of the nicer places we stayed on our 8 day Italy trip (budget locations, usually about 2 stars). As is usually the case with small hotels and b&bs in Italy, this hotel is a small operation with a random assortment of rooms that were probably once a few appartments on several floors. For our money it was worth every penny for the location, a tidy room, and a beautiful setting.

We recently spent two nights at the La Giara Hotel -- what a disappointment. It all started trying to find the hotel. The map provided on the web site was definitely not accurate. Most streets were one way (it seemed they were all going the way we didn't want to go). We must have drive around for at least 45 minutes before we were able to locate it.

There was not a working shower in our room -- only a bath tub that looked well worn! The towels were like sandpaper -- they probably should have been replaced years ago.

The front desk people were definitely not welcoming -- when advised that there was no shower in the room (the bracket holding up the shower head was broken) was told "that room only has a bath" -- not true -- the holder was broken for the hand held shower head!!!!

There was no parking available near the hotel -- we had to park at least a mile away and walk back to the hotel (because of the time of year we were able to park in a supermarket lot and pay nothing -- first we checked with the manager of the store). Otherwise, to park in a lot it would have cost $20 per day!!!! There is a picture on the hotel web site that leads you to believe there is parking available.

Hotel only took cash for payment -- never advised that at check in nor was it listed on the hotel web site. Would we have been held captive if we didn't have the cash????

The only positive thing I can say about the hotel was its location! In the old part of the city, near the waterfront and several good restaurants.
