“A chance to stay in a historic building in the heart of Tuscany.”
Reviewed June 6, 2011

The hotel is a huge renovated house in the middle of the town built over the actual ramparts of the old town walls. It is a huge rambling place which breathes history and it is very well furnished and decorated with antique furniture. The bathrooms are modern and well appointed and the lounge and sitting room reflect an older era of great grandeur. One cannot help feeling a little out of place sitting there with a laptop. The sauna and wellness area is below the hotel, in what would have been the wine cellar. It is very clean, serene and calm, and worthy of a four star hotel. The pool is a little way off from the hotel away from the town walls and accessed down some very steep steps. The hotel has a parking area nearby and you can offload at the reception, which is in a pedestrian area. The scottish and german ladies who worked as receptionists were both fantastic and very friendly and helpful. The breakfast room was a little cramped but the breakfast buffet was above average. On the whole a charming hotel, full of history, in a rambling old italian building right in the centre of Castellina in Chianti.

Room Tip: The big expensive rooms overlook the pool.

have to say I was very happy to find the recommendations were spot on - this was a charming place and really wished I had the valley view for the whole time as I missed an awesome lightning storm. I would certainly go back and have recommended to all my friends.

Room Tip: ask for the valley view

What a wonderful place. From Irene and Angela, the great front desk ladies. To the wonderful spa to the excellent terrace and pool!!! Our last 3 night in Italy were spent at this lovely establishment! We just escaped a horrible B&B with bugs, no locks on doors, toilet not working. We were very sad, discouraged then we stumbled upon Palazzo Squarcialupi. I can not say enough wonderful things about this hotel. It was clean, friendly, relaxing it just goes on and on. What a way to spend the last few days in Italy PERFECTO!!!!! Thank you for making our trip complete!

Room Tip: You cant go wrong!!! All of them are great!

This place is another one of those wonderful old palaces with large rooms, high ceilings, interesting woodwork, hints of history everywhere. The bathroom was modern and comfortable with better water pressure than ours at home. Our room looked out over the hills and was probably quieter than those facing the street. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and even came to the computer to help when we had trouble doing our online check-in for plane reservations the following day. I’d love to return.

My husband & I stayed at the Palazzo Squarchilupi for a week with a large group of friends to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. They were very accomodating for our group, setting up the terrace on nice days so we could enjoy the beautiful view while we chatted, and setting up the bar area for us when it was chilly. They were very accomodating and made sure we had everything we needed each night.

We arrived on Saturday, which is Castellina's market day. The taxi couldn't drop us off at the hotel since the market was set up, but it was only a few blocks to the hotel. We dropped off our bags and went to the market to buy meat & cheese for lunch. We ate on the terrace and marvelled at the view. Our rooms were all different, which we loved. My husband & I had the room with the balcony and spent a lot of time out there. I wish I had that view at home! The rooms were very clean and well-maintained. I loved the heater in the bathroom wall next to the commode, I've never seen that before.

Breakfast was ample, with meats, cheeses, hard boiled eggs, pastries, cereal and more. There was enough variety that you never had to eat the same thing every day.

We used the spa on various nights, that was very nice after a day of walking around hilltowns. The pool wasn't open yet since it was still April, but the pool area looked very nice.

The only improvement I can think of is to have softer beds. The beds were very firm, but soft beds may be an American thing. The staff said they had just replaced all of the beds in the hotel with Temperpedic mattresses. We got used to it after a few days, so it wasn't a big deal.

To me, Castellina was the perfect size town and the Palazzo Squarcilupi was the perfect hotel! We would love to return for another visit!

We tried to book the hotel in winter and they booked us in at their apartment (Called Dependance) next door. The people were very friendly and opened the hotel facilities just for us. Location is perfect overlooking hillsides, free parking and wifi and lots of room

Perfect location; helpful, friendly staff; good breakfast; comfortable bed, good-sized bathroom; and relatively well-furnished. Only reason I do not give the extra star is that the furnishings are a bit worn. But, overall, we would stay there again.
