“Great hotel lovely holiday”
Reviewed August 31, 2011

From D & E Brown - London UK

We stayed for 10 nights. The beach and the pool have fantastic views of the Vesuvius and Naples bay. The private beach is quirky, clean water and you swim with the fishes and with the view of course. The hotel has nice facilities, spotless clean. We have been upgraded to an apartment suite, again with views to die for. Lots of complimentary toiletries, water, coffee... clean and extremely comfortable rooms.

The location is great... 8 miles to Pompeii 10 to Sorrento. We have used the hotel shuttle service every night without problems.

The highlight for us was the staff. All friendly and helpful. Our special thanks to:

Anne and Conciglia in the reception.
Mario in the pool side.
Giovanni in the beach side.
Nino and Nicholas the drivers
and PEPE, the barman... He is the STAR of the STARS.

Highlights of our holiday:
THE HOTEL AND THE BEACH
Restaurants: STONE (5 minutes walking from the hotel, pricey but first class Italian cuisine); In Sorrento bay: Ruccio and Maremeo

Full Day Boat trip to Capri
Tours to Pompeii and Vesuvius

We highly recommend this hotel

Stayed for three nights with the family. Staff were excellent pool was great as was the beach. The rooms were a little on the small side but comfortable and the restaurant was very good.

Good location if you have a car to visit the Amalfi coast from.

We stayed 5 nights in august in a family suite with 2 balconies looking onto mount Vesuvius, the sea and pool. Clean hotel and rooms with helpful and friendly staff. We had a car which was essential. Lovely pool and beach area. Breakfast was good. A wider choice of snacks ice cream etc on site would have been appreciated but overall a good hotel.

I would echo the views of the previous few reviews. The hotel itself is nice although I don't think it is quite up to the standard of some other Crowne Plaza's I have stayed in.

The views are really spectaucular - we had a sea view room which was amazing. The room itself & facilities was really good & the spa which I used was really nice too. The restaurant can only be described as odd - A strange atmosphere with staff not really too sure what they were doing - we asked about having lunch there to be told it was a buffet (no signs anywhere said this!), returned to find some food out (nothing labelled so it was pot luck - managed to avoid the octopus!) & then saw some people looking at menus but when we asked was told it was buffet only!!!

The shuttle bus service I only knew about because I saw people mention it on her before I went but not advertised anywhere......& when we enquired, it was fully booked! We took buses into Sorrento which were fantastic value for money with the stop right outside the hotel. Taxis are VERY expensive - £80 back from Sorrento at nighttime so beware! Having said that all taxi drivers were very friendly & helpful!

You really can't walk anywhere so be prepared & the road outside gets very busy so be prepared for the buses to be late when stuck in traffic!

Room Tip: Sea View Room in West Wing

This was a treat from my husband at the end of our recent holiday and our two boys were amazed! The rooms were magnificent, ultra modern with lovely touches except for the dinosaur television! (Probably next to be refurbed!)
The location is difficult, I agree with other reviewers about the shuttle bus, it is just too infrequent and they over booked us on the way into Sorrento, but I definitely would not have wanted to drive!
We were disappointed the pool was closed during our one night stay and felt we should have been told, but enjoyed an hour on the beach instead
Breakfast was disappointing but the location for it was wonderful.
If you want to stay here you have to think carefully about the location, there is nothing around, you cannot walk any where and the traffic into Sorrento is dire.

I just returned from a five night stay at The Crowne Plaza. The hotel is beatiful and feels like a Carribean resort. It is modern, very clean with a great pool and a huge oceanfront. On the flipside, the restaurany is expensive and the quality is mediocre at best. The nearest town is about 15km away and the only way to get there is by shuttle or taxi. Neither of which are convenient. There is no bank machine on site, which further complicates things.

PROPERTY: From pictures in the eleveator, the property appears to have been converted from an industrial factory into a hotel. I couldn't find the history anywhere, but the pictures speak to this. There are remaining water towers from the old factory and each building has been converted to guests rooms. It is a marvellous conversion, if that is in fact what happened. The hotel lobby is at sea level, about twenty metres below the highway. You enter through this underground tunnel/overpass. You are immediately greeted with a breathtaking view of The Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuivius. The property frontage is probably 500 metres from east to west. Excellent views and great sunsets from the docking pier. The property is very secure with gated, controlled access to property.

FRONT DESK: The front desk always seem to be answering the phone and you will often wait. That said, they are very helpful when they do become available. They're English is decent and they are generally able to assist with most queries.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION: The hotel offers several shuttles to and from the nearest town Vico Equence and also in Sorrento. These are complimenraty, although the drivers apprecaite a small gratuity. In addition to the shuttle, a schedule of public buses is available for 4€ to Sorrento. There is also a taxi service available, approximately 14€ to Vico Equense, considerably more to Sorrento. The nearby train stations (Pozzano and Scrajo) are under construction which makes Vico Equense the nearest stop. If you can get there, the train to Sorrento is <2€ per person and likewise into Napoli Centrale. Take advantage of the free shuttles and then move around on the train when needed. Also the train seems to come about every 30 minutes or even more frequently (in both directions).

DINING: On the first night of our arrival, we were so fammished and tired, we decided we would simply try the the hotel restaurant "Gouache". I misordered my main course, thinking beef ribs would be a nice meal of braised meat only to get a rib-eye steak littered with fat. My bad, but regardless it was not very good. The "Gouache" restaurant is the only food service on site. What was really missing was a beach grill for the afternoon. The only option for lunch, was to go to the dining room for a buffet lunch (30€ per person) which was sore to the eye. The bar tender can also order you a Ciabbatta Pomodoro between 2:00 and 5:00 PM. 10€ and completely without taste. I think there was a rudimentary room service menu, but we didn't venture there. So, you really have to eat offsite. There is a restaurant about 200 metre (5 minute walk) up the road called Stone Restaurant. www.stoneristorante.it It isn't cheap either, but the food is delicious and the wine, service and ambience is very good. NOTE: arrive and leave early as the restaurant transorms into a nightclub later in the evening.

POOL AND SEA: There is a grand pool on site. Lots of shallow areas for children and lots of room for adults as well. Fountains and pool jets in a few locations. I think there is also a pullout solarium for the shoulder seasons which makes one end of the pool somewhat indoors (when needed). There are change rooms at the pool as well, so you don't have to return to your room. As noted above, there are no beach grills, nor a beach bar, so you have to walk about 100 metres back to the main building of the hotel to order either. There is a lifeguard on duty from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. They are strict that all guests depart by 7:00 PM. No "swimming at own risk" after the lifeguard leaves. That was a little annoying to be sent away while the sun was still high in the sky. Beach towels are available at a cost of 3€ per person, per day. We simply brought the towels from our bathroom. There is one large beach area with a few areas for swimmers to enter the sea. The beach is a gravel grotto. There are sunchairs available free of charge. A lifeguard is also on duty there.

ROOMS: We had one of the basic rooms. Two single beds. We had a beautfiul ocean view. Not oceanfront, but a nice full oceanview. The maids are very friendly and do a great job. Be sure to leave a small gratuity for them. Room features include: cable television with three English stations (CNN, BBC, MSNBC), minibar (stocked), hair dryer, safe, air conditioning, telephone, There is no iron or ironing board.

INTERNET: There is internet available by wifi throughout the property. The front desk will give you an access key/PIN good for one hour. You will receive 2x1 tickets free of charge and after that, any further use is at a cost of 4€ per hour. The connection is decent. Probably a DSL line. Not extremely fast, but sufficient for some browsing and even a Skype call.

NOTES: There seems to be a Budget rent-a-car on site. Bicycles for rent would be a nice addition, but not yet available. Naples like to celebrate every evening with fireworks and from time to time, the hotel likes to compete with their own demonstration from the dock. Can be noisey and a bit startling (at midnight), but a pleasant and fun surprise.

Booked to stay here for 4 nights and decided to leave after 3 as location was not good.
The hotel was more suited to business travellers and not families.
The restaurant was soulless and we were told we could not have lunch outside as the area was booked for business clients.
The area the hotel is in is filthy and not pleasant to walk around at night.
