This is very different to a standard hotel - and mostly better for that!
It is, essentially, two self-catering apartments on the top floor of an apartment block. The owner lives in the same block. Be warned - it is up four flights of stone stairs and there is no lift. The owner is very open about this and it wasn't a problem for us (partly because he carried our heaviest bag up for us!) Antonello (the owner) was also kind enough to meet us at the Circumvesuviana railway station and show us the way to the apartment.
The apartment consists of a bathroom, a small kitchen area, a dining area and a bedroom. It's light, airy and there's good aircon. The wifi is excellent - much better than most hotels offer (and it's included in the price). Breakfast was a collection of Italian cakes and pastries left in the kitchen area - so you are not bound to a breakfast time. Antonello told us we only had to ask if we needed anything. You need to take him at his word for this - if you want fresh towels, the beds changing etc then this will be done, but you need to ask. On our final night, Antonello explained where to catch the direct bus to the airport and he arranged with the company to stop closer to the apartment (there's a family connection to the bus company!). We really appreciated that as our main bag was quite heavy. (Note, the bus was about 35 min - and this is quite "normal"...so leave plenty of time to catch your flight!)
The town itself is nice enough. It's not Sorrento, but then again the prices are a bit cheaper. It is much more Italian (ie less tourist focussed) than some of the resort towns which makes for a more interesting holiday. It's easy to reach the main sights using the railway - we easily visited Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum and went on a trip up Vesuvius. The railway is very battered, but also dirt cheap!
Overall, I would recommend Tetto Fiorito as a great place to stay - very relaxing and a good base to explore this part of Italy.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- This enchanting property, housed in an old building in the heart of Castellammare di Stabia, enjoys a splendid view from the foot of Mount Faito. Situated in an eighteenth-century palace are two attic rooms (Tetto Lilla and Tetto Verde) both recently renovated in a style which preserves the historical features of the building. The rooms are located on the top (fourth) floor of the building (without elevator), with access to the flower laden communal terrace - the inspiration for the name: Tetto Fiorito! The location of the Tetto Fiorito is both unique and strategic - being only a short 5 minute walk from the Circumvesuviana station of Castellammare di Stabia. Trains for Sorrento, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples leave from here every 30 minutes. The Faito Cableway is located in the same station where you can take the cable car and be immersed in the countryside in the 7 minutes it takes to reach the 1100 meters summit. The port of Castellammare, to visit Capri, is only 10 minutes far. ... more less
