“The Old Olive Mill”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

The heart-thumping narrow street leading to the restaurant goes underneath an arch and into a quick right turn to reveal a breathtaking view of the valley and Tyrrhenian coast. At sunset, when we went as a group of 16, the remarkable view was matched by the authentic Tuscan food, broad wine list and engaging service. The cinghiale pasta, grilled meats, vermentino and ornellaia from Bolgheri were all very good. it was a capstone to a very good week in Castagneto.

“Traditional Trattoria Worth a Visit or Two!”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

We showed up without a reservation on a Friday night and were told we could only eat in their pizza restaurant next door which offered the same menu but without the warmth and ambience. We decided to book in for the next night and went elsewhere. We returned the next evening and were greeted warmly-- they remembered us from the night before. The dining room is in a long vault and though large, feels cozy. It was also packed, mostly with locals. The woman sitting next to me was the owner's cousin. The food is very traditional for the area and really good. We shared a tagliatelle with sausage and zucchini that was delicious, followed by baby goat for my husband and an enormous steak with arugula for me. The portions were huge. Somehow we managed to get through a house made chocolate torte with gelato for dessert, too. Wine list is good and includes many local wines of the Bolgheri region which are perfect with the food. Service was efficient but helpful. We wound up coming for a second dinner because the pizzas we saw other people eating (served only on weekends) looked so good! The second dinner, which we had in the main restaurant, not the pizzeria, I had a pizza with prosciutto and arugula along with a platter of delicious grilled vegetables served with olive oil infused with pepper and garlic (had a great kick) and my husband had a roast pork with roast potatoes. We were both very happy with our meals. Service was again attentive and we enjoyed our evenings both times. The restaurant has a large outdoor patio where meals are served in warmer weather as well as the pizzeria which is serviceable, but totally lacking in charm. Stick to the main restaurant or outdoor seating when weather permits.
