“Worth the drive up the mountain...”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

We drove up to the Abbey and the views on the way were amazing. Once getting to the Abbey, we bought a guide and continued through the property. The Abbey has a wonderful history. The views from the Abbey are spectacular! The church was breathtaking. A must see if you are in the area!

“Magnificent abbey, worth the drive up the mountain”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

Whilst it was 3 euro to park your car, entrance to the abbey was free to explore the abbey and beautiful gardens and squares.

The views really are to die for, and the abbey has been beautifully rebuilt following the hammering it too during the second world war. Gaze from one of the balconies to the nearby Polish War cemetery for a reality check on this history of this abbey and surrounding area.

If I am honest, we were actually looking for the Polish Cemetery and took a wrong turn and ended up at the Abbey, but I am so glad we did as this place is a delight of scenery, senses and sereneness - well worth the easy drive up from the nearby town of Cassino.

“The attraction of Monte Cassino somewhat explained”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

We managed to get Sunday mass in our 3-hour visit which was a dramatic experience in many ways including superb organ music in a magnificent church. The real attraction was getting a feel for the ancient history (over 800? years as a sacred place) and terrible destruction with hundreds of civilian casualties (military intelligence is an oxymoron) in World War II which has been written up in many books.

The views were superb and the view of the Polish war cemetery was sobering.

The sermon (obviously in Italian) went on a bit, but it is a monastery after all.

“A beautiful piece of religious history”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

Having grown up visiting this place so many times over the past 4 decades, it has changed for the better in that time, allowing visitors to take pictures a while back from a big improvement. The scenery from the Abbey is also well worth taking in, in addition to the views from the mountain road on the way up. Take your time, and discover a wealth of beautiful imagery.

I agree with a previous reviewer stating this isn't a place for young children, especially vocal ones. Then again, I usually find it's the other visitors that lack tolerance rather than the monks!
