Found this place on TripAdvisor after a hard days outlet shopping in Regello and Barbarino. Calenzeno is a small place but easy to find, as is Da Gianni. Don't be put off by the modest external appearance, or the simple dining room. The welcome and the food are very warm! The selection of meat is impressive, and Daniele (the owner) was happy to explain everything and recommend. We had a Costata that was perfectly cooked with an amazing flavour. You can see the kitchen and the grill with its hot coals - he even have us a demonstration of how to cook the perfect Costata! Daniele and his wife have a passion for what they do and great personalities. Well worth a visit if you're seeking great Tuscany meat.

We have been for 7 days traveling trought Rome and Tuscany, in our last night in Florence, we asked for a nice place to eat the famous Bistecca Fiorentina. 'Da Gianni' was our place! One of the best meals ever during our stay in Italy, it's worth trying the Bistecca there!! (Aproximately 40€/two persons) I asked for a beef with parmeasan cheese and ruccula that was AWESOME! Try the 'vino della casa' it's nice and cheap (7€/0,75l). The service was also nice, and at the end of our meal the lady also offered some tipical beverages and biscuits. The outside aspect it's probably not what you were expecting, but please go on and try their food!

We were lucky enough to have our friend refer us to this fantastic restaurant while on vacation in Florence. It was the highlight of our trip. We have been to Italy over 10 times and this is the best restaurant we have encountered

The antipasti was incredible. I ordered gluten free pasta with unbelievable red sauce. My wife had al dente pasta with a reduction of red wine and onions. Too die for. The Florentine steak was so tender and flavorful. Like cutting into butter. All this was served by a great waitress and the wife's owner. Truly a delicious Florentine meal half way to paradise in the hills between Florence and Bologna. This is a must for anyone who loves authentic Italian Food from Tuscany!!!

And to top it off, I hugged the chef coming in, and gave him a great big kiss going out. They were extremely fun to be around. It was like having dinner with family. This is a must for all foodies who to travel to Tuscany.

TA comes thru again. What a great dinner.
This place was spot on. Dining outside. Place was full of italians. I love the social atmosphere when dining in Italy. It's almost asian and it makes me feel at home. So a very good sign. No english menu. and reservations is a MUST.

I can't resist truffles anything in the summer. We chose pasta with truffels. The taste and smell are amazing. It just mesmerizes everyone on the table, They are also quite generous with it. And at 13€. It's cheap as chips. But still nearly twice the price of regular pasta.

At twice that price in the netherlands they only prepare using truffle oil.In Holland at this price they will only let you smell the truffles.LOL.

But we of course we came here for the Bistecca Florentine. There was quite a lot of different cuts on offer. Of the florentine you get the choice of the Chianina(Italian cowrace special for meat) or the regular kind.(I should have tried both). I chose the chianina.
Price is 38€ per kg for the regular and 48€ for the chianina.

We were very conservative when ordering. The heat slows our appetites and we notice that our stomachs couldn't handle what our eyes wanted.
We were with 4 and was offered either 1KG or 2 x 2kg. Instead i chose for 1,5 kg in one piece for the 4 of us. looks alot,...but you get a huge piece of bone with it. So at max 1/1,2kg of meat amongst 4 is really doable. I think i made a correct decision.

I learned from an italian that with bistecca you need it to be really thick. Thumb thickness(height of the thumb).And with size of the cut of the chianina 1kg is maybe to thin.
When the meat came on the table I was not dissappointed.
The meat was precut. What really caught my eye was the difference in doneness. meat was from pink(medium) to rare. Something for everybody. The closer to the bone the rarer it was.

I chose a medium and a medium rare piece. Both taste delicious. So tender it didnt really matter how done it was.
But what made the steak so so special....the crust. I dont know how they do it. It was thick and crispy and gave a great crunch...without tasting like it was burnt. So when you bite in it....you will bite thru a crispy crust and then to a soft and tender flesh with in. Incredible taste experience. Never had it in a steak.
Not even at Luger's. Yes I am starting to compare this restaurant with Peter Luger's.
The steak was prepared with a grill with either wood or charcoal in it.No gas or anything. Old school. Could this have something to do with it? (I made pictures of them cutting and baking the steak)
It was so good...without realising it we went thru the 1,5kg steak like it was nothing. Almost ordered another KG of steak before our stomachs informed our brains that it was enough.

With this steak we ordered side dishes. Reading on TA. What was recommended was the mushrooms. Only on the menu was 3 mushroom dishes.. Well the correct mushroom dish are the Funghi Fritti. Fried Mushrooms ala Tempura. It was so delicious. A seasonal dish. these must be huge mushrooms. Even in chunks they were quite big. But the taste was so delicate and light. i was at first afraid that in the heat it would be to fatty. But none of that problem.
What dissappointed me was the mushroom trifolata. There was a warning in the menu that this was from the fridge. And it was ok, but nothing compared with the Fritti mushroom which was fresh and seasonal.
Also the potatoes that was recommended here was truly dissappointing. It was just steakfries. Not a roast potato or anything special. Very dissappointed. Looked hard at the menu...didnt see anyother potatodish.

In the end I didnt get any desserts...because dessert is reserved for Gelato in Italy. Eaten at a gelateria. Still plenty of choices on the menu for some seriously interesting dolces.

We received a complimentary amaretto with cookies So delicious and great ending to a fine dinner,

But the best was the bill.At the end with wine, Pasta, Steak and 3 sidedishes for 4 persons....100€!!!! Thats 25€ a person!!! This is just ridiculous pricing for this meal. I Love Italy. The secret I think is the bevrages. Wine and water are so cheap here.

As a sidebar this experience still has not bumped PL from my top spot.Luger's was better. Simply because the meat at PL is much more flavourfull. I think purely due to the aging time. At Da Gianni the meat is hung for 8 days while at Luger's its hung way longer than that,

Ideally a Chianina dryaged according to PLs process and than baked in the same style as at Da Gianni would win it for me.

Anyway highly recommended place. I have eaten 3 bistecca's in Italy thus far. At La trioa and Da Mario in Florence. But this is the best.
