“Fish restaurant on Lakeside”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013

This was the first time that we visited this restaurant where we discovered that many locals were enjoying a meal. I had sea trout. It was one of the best meals that we enjoyed whilst staying in Italy. The menu was extensive which could be enjoyed with excellent local wines. Service was quick and professional.

“Beautiful view, good food, great staff!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2012

A tiny, little place-hard to see from the road. One of the best tables on the lake! Chose not to "order" but to allow the waiter to feed us. Right choice because he knew what was the freshest and best...supurb! First course was fish served several ways, local sardines a speciality. The fish served with pickled onions...soooooo good. The fish balls with a fresh, spicy sauce was GREAT! Reminded me of some New Orleans-Italian seafood dishes. Second course-seafood stuffed raviolies in a fresh-rosemary-tomatoe sauce. Third course- various grilled fish and a mixed salad. Nice group of local wines and 7 with a bit of "frizante'"...little fizz. All in all, the best meal we had on the lake...if you don't like to eat local or fish...this is not your place. If you relax and let them feed you...it's a wonderful experience. WILL RETURN!

“Unfriendly Service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2011

Personally, while the food was good, the service was far from friendly. Gone was the famed Italian humour and charm. In its place was gruffness and indifference to the customer.

I have scored this place with 3 stars on the basis that the food deserves a 4 but the poor service deserves a 2, making an average of 3.

It is a shame, as the setting is quite nice.

Meal of pasta and a couple of beers, tiramisu and coffee, €24

“Not bad, if a little touristy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2009

We have discovered during our trips to Italy that if a restaurant has a spoon laid out for eating the pasta, it is dedicated to the tourist crowd rather than the locals. The fashion of using a spoon to help twirl spaghetti onto one's fork certainly did not originate in Italy! Sure enough, most of the evening diners at La Taverna del Capitano were middle-aged English, the fusty conservative type who don't even bother to try to say "grazie" or "buongiorno".

Never mind! The food was pretty good, definitely aimed at the tourist trade but nice fresh seafood and tasty pasta sauces, good, cheap vino di casa, and friendly attentive service.

“Good Value with good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2009

This was one of the restaurants recommended by our Hotel. Although there is no lake view this restaurant has a lovely atmosphere. We ate there twice in our four days in Malcesine which says a lot.
