“Excellent friendly hotel with great food. Great for cyclists.”
Reviewed July 12, 2011

I stayed here for a week at the end of June / early July 2011. The purpose of my trip was to cycle some of the many passes located around Bormio.

The hotel room was of sufficient size and clean. Staff in the hotel were very helpful, friendly and spoke good English. Although the noticeboard says that Wi-Fi attracted a cost, it was actually free of charge. The hotel is situate opposite the main ski gondola in Bormio so ideally located and only a few minutes walk from central Bormio.

The absolute best thing about the hotel was its food - outstanding. Breakfast was always first rate - a very wide variety of meats, hams, cereals, cakes and croissants. Each morning we were presented with options for the evening four course meal - always great choices and using local produce and dishes where possible. The salad bar was amazing and rotated every few days. Salad was followed generally by a pasta dish, then a meat/fish dish then a choice of desserts. Certainly appreciated when cycling so much.

As this is a cycling / bike hotel, if you provide your laundry to reception by 7pm, it will be ready for you first thing on the following morning free of charge. Front desk staff were helpful in giving directions to the various climbs / passes.

In summary: the hotel building and rooms are of a good standard but what makes this hotel stand out is the helpful staff and outstanding food.

I highly recommend Hotel Alu as a place to stay for a cycling holiday or otherwise. The hotel is located on a quiet sidestreet that is an easy 5 minute walk from downtown Bormio and very accessible to some of the greatest (and most challenging) cycling routes on earth, including the iconic Gavia, Stelvio and Mortirolo passes. First and foremost, the staff and food were unbelievable! The front desk was extremely friendly and knowledgable about the area. The breakfast and dinners, which were included in the price of the room, were freshly prepared with local produce and always served with a bright smile. Our twin-bed room was small, but clean and bright with modern bathroom facilities. The hotel also provided free next day laundry service -- a nice touch. The hotel had a secure bike garage fully stocked with bike tools. The hotel also had a nice spa, but it was only open a few days a week. Would have been nice if the spa was open every day. Also, it would have been nice if the hotel had offered free Wi-Fi service, which was available for an extra fee. Otherwise, the hotel was perfect, and I would highly recommend it -- for the location, food and hospitality alone -- to anyone considering a cycling holiday in Bormio.

Excellent hotel. Nice spa and lobby area. Very cozy. Great location across the street from ski lifts. Everything is walking distance.
