Staying at the Nuovi Bagni Spa a few miles away (excellent), we opted for a less formal dining option. Al Filo was both recommended by the hotel and also the taxi driver who took us to Bormio. Set below ground in almost a cave, this was an unusual setting. Service and staff knowledge was excellent and they both helped with food and wine choices. We opted for localish red wine (from Tirano). It was good and reasonably priced. Food was excellent and the standout was a dish serving 3 types of meat on a thick wooden skewer. Like an oversized knitting needle! Deer, pork, beef. Very salty indeed, but well cooked. It was accompanied by polenta and we shared some grilled veg. One of our group also had an excellent veggie pasta dish. All in all, great service and well prepared food. If you're in Bormio for one night as we were, this is an excellent choice! If you're there in ski season, I could imagine a lively atmosphere!

As our visit to Al Filo was rather improvised, we shoved up on a Saturday evening, without a reservation. Fortunately they were able to find us a table, although we were given a time limit of 2½ hour before we would have to leave. This was plenty of time for us, so no problem.

All the dishes we tasted, all the way from antipasti to deserts, where tasty and beautifully presented. Add to this a lovely environment and friendly and efficient service, and everything is in place for a wonderful evening.

I see some reviews put the restaurant in the “typical local food” category. This is a bit misleading. In a “typical local food” mountain restaurant you would expect huge portions of calorie rich food. The dishes at Al Filo are more inspired elaborations on local cuisine and the size of the individual dishes are tuned to a 3-course meal (or more). So do not expect to fill up on a single dish after a busy day hiking or skiing.

PS! On the current Tripadvisor-map the restaurant is wrongly placed “in the middle of nowhere”, next to the river. Anyway, the address is correct and it is correctly placed on the free maps handed out at the hotels/tourist information.

Fantastic atmosphere, and very good food. I have known this place for a long time, when it still was called Il Taula' and I guess if the chef is the same because the food is excellent as ever.
