Where to begin! The hotel is located at the end of Bordighera, (the town itself is nothing special) We stayed here on our way to Monaco which is only a 30 min drive. As 5 star hotels in Monaco are very expensive this was a very good alternative. We absolutely loved this place! The hotel entrance is right off the road, you pull into the underground drive way to the cave like entrance to the hotel where the valet takes your luggage and parks your car, (valet parking is included in the price of your room) A reviewer before said that its like something out of a bond movie, and I have to agree, You feel like your staying in some secret hide away, isolated from everything else and only you and a select few are able to access. There are literally 100s of fine museum quality antiques fit for a royal palace through out the hotel, the common areas are opullant, the rooms are large and beautiful, the view from your room is wonderful. Everything is spotless. The hotel sits on a cliff, so you have very nice sea views from your room and large private balcony. The outside garden is also lovely and well maintained. They have a wonderful wellness center and access is complimentary, We really enjoyed the heated salt water indoor pool. A nice buffet breakfast is also included in the room rate. We had dinner in the restaurant and although expensive it was good. Stay here, you will love it!

First of all - nothing to complain...all was ok, but it's never a 5***** Hotel and probably has seen it's best times in the 50ties and 60ties.
The location is quite nice, however it takes you a 10min walk to reach the (not really beautiful) beach over stairs - no lift available.
The Parking situation is not what you expect from a 5 Star hotel, but not a big issue.
The (non-treatment) Wellness-Area is by far to small, you need to be lucky to find a place.
We did not have Dinner in the Restaurant, but the Breakfast is really good.
Again, all was ok but this Hotel has never generated in us the temptation to come back again...

We loved the hotel so much we would stay here again. It is nicely situated overlooking the sea. We walked to the GHM Beach club and spent some time swimming in the sea. Not your sandy beach but nonetheless it was refreshing. Th only issues we had was dinner - you had to partake in the "outdoor" dinner party and when we checked out we learned that desert was not free - the hotel actually changed our bill after we signed it. Really bad practice. However my wife and I are fair people and if we tae it, and it cost money, then we should pay for it. But for this reason I would be very careful of what you get charged at this hotel. Also when we checked out there were mini bar charges on our bill which we did not use (we only stayed 1 night). I would have assumed the hotel knew they were ours so again, please review you bill!!! I rate this hotel downward for these reasons. They shoud know better.

This was one of the best hotels in our one-month voyage in Southern France-Italy in September. Initially we were put off by the ugly entrance through the hotel parking - there was no other way to approach it. Then, the luxurious, albeit somewhat ostentatious, interior amazed on the contrast.

The reception was exceedingly polite, the bags were all taken care of by the bell staff, and we were escorted to our room 326 (all rooms are seaside!) which stunned with opulent decorations, including an elegant chandelier. The furnishings were truly of a very high quality, windows beautifully dressed with heavy brocade curtains. I absolutely loved the traditional warm interior design, somewhat in the Neoclassical style; luckily there was nothing of the modern minimalist steel/plastic emptiness, the room was truly a joy.

The huge balcony was totally private (we were at the 3rd floor). It was extremely enjoyable and well-equipped with a large table and two very comfortable chairs. The views from the balcony on the sea and the shore were unforgettable; all rooms were facing southwest, so you could watch the sunset...

The bed was excellent. There was plenty of storage room in closets and drawers. The minibar was nicely equipped with glassware and a little fridge was handy. The bathroom was a bit small, with no bathtub, but it was well-stocked with toiletries.

The breakfast was very rich with a great variety of pastries, fruits, freshly made juices, cheeses, cold cuts, eggs, etc. - it was a true cornucopia.

The hotel's park is immaculately maintained and it afforded splendid views. A huge plus was that this hotel was a TRUE SEASIDE property, with direct access to the sea from the building, with no road in between as it is typical in so many hotels in Nice, Sanremo or Menton.

The beach itself was all gravel, like in Nice, with a small streak of sand. The beach was not especially festively equipped yet we always had places under an umbrella. There was a bar at the beach. The swimming at the sea was very good, the water was clean albeit not overly warm in September, though it was warmer than in Saint-Tropez. Well, Côte d'Azur is certainly not Hawaii water-temperature wise.

We had a car and drove to visit some nearby places - Villa Hanbury, Menton, Sanremo; the hotel itself is far from everything walk-wise. The hotel's parking is free; it is usually quite full but there are always places within 1 minute walk to the entrance if you arrive late.

Check-in/out times were also very generous. There was great service throughout, with bags and else. All in all, the hotel for what it offers is far superior to any similarly-priced establishments in France and we greatly enjoyed staying there for 2 nights and using it as a base for visiting the aforementioned towns.

I bitterly regretted that we moved to a hotel in Nice for the third night at Côte d'Azur as we presumed it would be more convenient to be closer to the airport for the next day departure. We should have stayed at Grand Hotel del Mare - the drive would be only 20 minutes or so longer, but the comforts and pleasures of the hotel could not possibly be surpassed by any hotel in Nice within the same rate.

Minor flaws:

There are only a few things missing in the overall excellent hotel:

- The beach is too close to the train tunnel and the road, so you hear all that. This makes the seaside rest not totally immersed in nature and not overly tranquil (although in the room it is completely free from any noise). I would compare the beach area setting to an average beach at Nice where one is always aware of being in the city even at the beach.

- Secondly, for such a luxurious room not having a bathtub was somewhat disappointing, but the shower was still very strong.

Overall, the hotel is a great place to stay at the sea and close to Côte d'Azur, it was a delight for all senses, we will definitely return.

Strongly recommended!!!

Room Tip: Make a reservation as far in advance as possible as it gets full. All rooms are sea facing.

We spent a couple of days here to visit the surroundings of Bordighera. At first the hotel looked like a real hit. The whole hotel is build into the cliff rocks with the parking and the entrance below surface. It all looks like it could be the set of a James Bond movie.

We had a two bedroom suite with an extra small wardrobe room and a huge bathroom. 4 nights with breakfast cost us a little less than 1000 Euro with breakfast included (all booked with German TUI). The breakfast was great with a selection of freshly squeezed juices and a selection of eggs in lots of styles to choose from. I cannot really talk about the lunch and dinner as we never ate at the hotel. Main courses on the menu were all priced around 20 euros.

So why only a three star rating? That because in my eyes the hotel does not live up to its five star rating. Yes, there was live music every evening in the bar (a piano player) but it made no sense to sit there as they had no draft beer and one bottle of 0,33 l costed six euros. Besides small beers were served together with large 0,5 liter glasses which made absolutely no sense. Copared to local prices this is really outrageous. On our trip to monaco the Coke in the Cafe de Paris right next to the Monaco casino was "only" 7 euros.

Another interesting thing was that we ordered some ice cubes to our room which were free in general but we were charge a six euro delivery charge for this. Internet was luckily included and worked well. So that's a plus.

Considering the service it was also nice and neat but not on a five star level. Everyone was aiming to appear as if they were five star staff but having been at other places it looked more or less like a nice try...

Room Tip: All suites are located on the second floor except for the really big individual ones that are featur...

We stayed recently for 4 nights, our room was very comfortable and the quality of the bed linen, towels excellent. The house keeping service deserve a mention for their attention to detail and the pool attendants who bring you beach towels etc were excellent and very nice and friendly. These groups of staff really stand out in my opinion.

The location, directly on the coast is lovely and the views are excellent. The beach is pebble rather than sand and the private hotel beach was not open during our stay. The real highlight is the beautiful and well attended garden and pool area where there are a generous amount of sunbeds and umbrellas. The Spa is also good.

You can walk to the 'Old Town' in a comfortable 15 mins or you can drive and find parking. If you want to eat/drink outwith the hotel, which we did, it does necessitate a small journey into Bordighera as there is only 1 restaurant (excellent), close to the hotel.

The negative aspect in my opinion is the prices charged in the hotel for drinks, snacks etc. There is a huge lobby bar/lounge area where piano music is played every night. I only ever saw 2 people having a drink as the Cocktails start at 12 Euros. I am sure if they made them a little more reasonable or had a Happy Hour for guests they would find more guests sitting in the lounge enjoying the music and the Piano player would feel a little less lonely!!. My husband had a very average piece of Lemon Cake and a bad Cappucino for 17 Euros. We did not eat in the restaurant but heard from various other guests that the food was uninspiring, therefore we ate in Bordighera where there are some great restaurants the entire time.

The atmosphere is very definitely 'old world Italian', pleasant and friendly and they are very dog friendly.
