Hotel des Geneys Splendid
Ranked #12 of 23 Hotels in Bardonecchia
Reviewed February 20, 2012

I have recently stayed at this hotel with a friend and their family. It was a real last minute trip and rather cheap so i was a bit worried and suspicious of what was to come but i was completely blown away.

I appoligise if this is long but this hotel deserves it.

On arriving at the you are greeted by a porter who takes all your bags up to your room. Once in the rooms they are a tad small but perfectly adequate for two people. There was plenty of wardrove space and although the water was varied with temperature the bathroom was really clean and tidy.

I was staying with a female friend and between the both of us we weren't that tidy (i know, i know, shame on us), but we would arrive back everyday after skiing to find all our clothes were neatly packed away and the room imaculate. My highlight of every day would be when i would go to bed and find my night wear neatly folded under my pillow.

Although i was actually the youngest resident staying at the hotel and just 17 there was still plenty to do with a fitness suite and games room. As a 17 year old boy i am slightly addicted to facebook and could recieve the free internet from my room but with a stronger connection in the bar.

You would pick your food from the menu which had been translated into english for us in the morning. There were usually 3 options, with me as a fussy eater, finding plenty to eat. You would have a 4 course meal that was truely beautiful. For desert you would have a home-made sweet.

This was my only criticism of the entire experience, although it did provide many laughs. The tall waiter would have over and orally list that nights deserts menu. Although he was trying and for that i commend him. He had learnt certain words from the deserts menu. This meant you would be given the list of; Meringue , orange chocolate cake, cheescake and bread and butter.

Sadly when ordering this desert you would never come back with what you'd expect. For example the meringue was actually chocolate angel delight with small peices of meringue in. A similar problem with the choclate cake in which you had a choclate cake with marmalade spead over the top.

Maybe it was just because of the company but i thought this hotel was clearly one of the best i've stayed in.

Room Tip: The only thing i could possibly suggest is if you do have a problem just tell the hotel and they wil...

Stayed here Feb 2012. The hotel is in a quiet location within easy access of the slopes and shops.Luigi drives the hotels free shuttle bus to take you to and from the slopes everyday and drops you at the Campo Smith lifts. The hotel has its own boot room which is accessed from outside and comes up right where the shuttle bus parks. The hotels rooms are warm, clean and tidy and very well equipped for a ski hotel. Food at breakfast and evening is very good and the staff are always available to help. It was very nice to see the owners eat with us in the evenings and they even had friends to dinner on one occasion. I would have no reason not to stay here again as everything was very nice and well organised.

Wonder if there's some shenanigans going on here - a lot of short 5-star reviews from people who've never posted any other reviews on tripadvisor!

We're just back from a week at the Des Geneys on a skiing holiday with the family (all adults). It's a fairly typical Italian hotel in a skiing resort, really. Not the best I've stayed in, not the worst. I think I read somewhere it is quoted as a 4-star; that's definitely ambitious, and if you're expecting that sort of quality you'll be disappointed, it's probably more a 3 or a 2.

The good - the place is clean, and they seem to take reasonable pride in the appearance of the hotel and the shared areas. The bar/lounge area is small-ish but reasonably pleasant, with free bar snacks on offer. There's a (slightly tatty) boot room for your skiing gear, what appears to be a nice garden area (the claim the hotel's in a "park" is a little misleading, however), a small fitness room (stepper, bike & one weight machine) and apparently a sauna (but it isn't free). The restaurant, whilst a little stuffy, serves very good, simple food in the evening, and they try hard now and again with "special" meals. The set-up is the usual Italian one of an antipasti/appetiser/salad buffet (which is pretty good), followed by a simple pasta course, followed by a meat or fish course. There's a choice of three options for each on most nights, although a vegetarian option bizarrely doesn't always seem available.

The hotel is also child/family friendly, which is great if you have small kids (they're welcome in the dining hall, one or two of the staff seem to like entertaining them, and there are some evening activities on some days for them), but may not be to everyone's tastes.

The bad - the rooms are a little noisy, with thin walls through which you can hear conservations held at normal volume from next door, or the toilet being flushed on the floor above. The staff are variable, generally friendly but can be a bit brusque and the gushing service reported by some other reviewers wasn't especially on show during our visit, although the staff in the restaurant were very good. The bar ordering policy is odd - you can't pay in cash, it has to go on the room, and there is no evidence of any prices anywhere. We got stung by what appeared to be quite a large bar tab at the end of the week although, to their credit, they did give us a small discount.

The location of the hotel could be better - as advertised, it's 15 mins or so walk to Campo Smith, the main Bardonecchia skiing complex, but I'd say it's not readily walkable in icey conditions with skiing gear. The free ski bus is only a 5 minute walk, though. The main street of bars/shops is also nearby, so I guess it's a well-situated hotel overall, and the town is small enough to be generally walkable.

The rooms are a little old-fashioned but generally OK. There is no significant difference between a double and a twin - they all have two single beds pushed together, which isn't ideal in any situation but which is, I guess, par for the course on the continent. We did have some problems getting consistent hot water in the afternoons, which is pretty frustrating on a skiing holiday.

So, all in all, it's fine. An average, family-run Italian hotel.

My husband and 2 children aged 7 and 2 1/2 yrs spent 2 nights here at the start of easter week. The hotel was empty apart from another group of 8 english guests. We were unable to have the family room that we booked in advance as according to the the proprietor, "the heating was switched off on that floor and would be very cold ", presumably to save money....However the room we were given was clean and spacious and the owner informally mentioned that we could have a refund although this never transpired as we left prematurely. The hotel staff were kind and grateful but the lack of other guests meant that the hotel did not have the lively ambience that we anticipated from a traditional family run italian hotel. We certainly did not have the pianist playing in the restaurant or the candlelit meals as previously mentioned ! My husband accurately described it as like being in 'the shining' minus jack nicholson...We are normally adventurous eaters but the food was bland with no fresh vegetables for the 2 nights we were there.
The hotel is close to several supermarkets and the main shopping area if you can call it that but 15 mins from the slopes although there is a regular ski bus that stops a 5 min walk away...The resort has no english speaking creche available and apart from a reasonably good play area nr the swimming pool there is very little to while away the hours if you're not skiing and caring for a toddler , no cleared walks in the wonderful surrounding scenery, even the palace of sports was shut, pool not open til 3pm, shops shut 12.30 - 3.30 or 4pm ...Block after block of shuttered appartments,. Saying that DS 1 loved the skiing and made several friends...

We stayed here for a weekend with a group of people. The hotel is in a very good location with easy access to the town. The staff at the Hotel were friendly and helpful. Our room was large with good storage and nice bathroom however the decor was dated and some work had not been finished. The food was poor I would not recommend eating at this hotel, there so many other restaurants to chose from that were excellent. The hotel did not offer free internet which was a negative
