I come to Bardolino about 3 or 4 times a year and this was the second time I have stayed at the Hotel 4 Stagioni. Sadly this time it was a real disappointment.
The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is in the centre of Bardolino so you are right in the middle of everything. The hotel is also nicely furnished with antiques etc and lots of flowers in the communal areas. And the beds are comfy and the room a decent size (although we paid for a superior room so you would expect this). They also have free bikes (varying in quality) that you can take out, which we did.
The main problem though was the staff! The reception was frosty from the outset which I was surprised about because I speak a decent amount of Italian and always try to make an effort but the woman who is the owner mostly just glared at us! And despite being informed that there was a night porter who would let us in late we felt like a massive inconvenience when we got back to the hotel at night.
The worst part was on our second night. I switched the TV on in the room and the lights and electrics went out! My friend was in the shower at the time and it was bit alarming. After a bit, the staff got the lights back on but still no power in the plugs. We reported this to reception who were reluctant to help and eventually we found the fuse box ourselves! A couple of minutes later the same thing happened again and in fact in the space of half an hour the electrics blew about 6 times. Rather than help us the staff accused us of doing something wrong (which we weren't!). Eventually I indentified that there might be a problem with the extension lead in the hotel (there was only one plug socket which the hotel ran a lead off). I asked for it to be changed and with some reluctance they did. The problem was then solved but we did not get an apology and ended up being late for dinner. A bit of courtesy would have difused the situation.
Other complaints are that the toiletries were totally inadequate (a bit of cheap soap and shower gel, no shampoo or body lotion etc). The walls are really thin so we could hear the conversations and TV of the people next door. The hairdryer was totally ineffective (although you find that in a lot of Italian hotels), the coffee at breakfast one day was foul and undrinkable.
This has the makings of a really good hotel but until customer service is improved it won't be. I don't really know what has gone wrong here because the first time I stayed it was much better experience and I was really keen to come back! I've got a couple of trips to Bardolino booked for next year and I had initially thought I'd found a gem in this place but sadly I think I am going to have to find somewhere else to stay!
