“a gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 13, 2014

Ascoli is a fascinating town, and Palazzo dei Mercanto was an ideal place to stay, right in the heart of the historic area. As other reviews have noted, the staff is tremendously friendly and helpful. Our room was nicely finished, and we appreciated how well the property has been restored and maintained. Breakfast was very good.

My husband and i just returned from a wonderful stay at Palazzo dei Mercanti and we can't say enough about the hospitality shown to us. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and would recommend it to anyone. We will be back!

The hotel is located at the center of the city, just a few minutes away from the most important monuments. Our room (105) was nice and quiet but not very large. We had poor WiFi reception and we had to log in again very frequently, quite annoying given the otherwise very high quality of service. The breakfast is in line with most Italian hotels, i.e. nothing spectacular. The spa is very nice and quiet because you have to book it in advance and only a limited number of guests is allowed during each slot. We parked our motorcycle in the hotel owner's garage just nearby and it was complimentary because he is also a motorbike rider.

We stayed here for two nights in May while travelling around Italy. The weather wasnt very warm, but the welcome certainly was. The rooms are large and comfortable with modern and spacious bathrooms. Breakfast is good, with a nice selection of things and good coffee. The main highlight though were the reception staff who could not have been more helpful and friendly. They gave us recommendations for restaurants nearby, helpfully suggesting places with a range of prices and 'smartness'! Sometimes you are suspicous that they are recommending places where they have some form of arrangement. But that was definitely not true in this case. The recommended restaurants were excellent, clearly patronised by locals. The lady on reception was also so pleased that we had enjoyed them. The hotel is also very well located right in the heart of town. By coincidence the Mille Miglia car rally went through Ascoli on our second day and all the lovely old cars drove down the road right outside the hotel. All in all a lovely friendly place to stay in a very beautiful town that is slightly off the main tourist track (and all the better for that!)

This beautifully repurposed nunnery, just off the Piazza del Popolo, was very comfortable and welcoming.

Front desk staff were very helpful, from restaurant suggestions and reservations, to parking our rental car while we explored this historic and interesting provincial city, somewhat off the foreign tourist beaten trail, on foot. Our room had a very comfortable bed, big bath, and a window that could be opened if you didn't mind the occasional cooking smell. The back of the hotel was generally quiet. A copious cold Italian breakfast downstairs was a great way to start the day.

The Nespresso machine in the lobby provided a quick espresso if you did not want to venture out to one of the many nearby cafés.

With 100 cable channels, it was unfortunate there were no satellite news channels except in Italian. The wifi was free and worked well.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are away from the traffic, but there's a sidewalk below and cooking smells if...

This hotel is in the old centre of this lovely town. The hotel is just around the corner from the main plaza which is a lovely arcaded with several nice cafes and restaurants. While located in old buildings, the hotel's interior has been renovated in a very nice modern style. Breakfast was very nice with some very interesting choices.

Ascoli Piceno is in itself a beautiful town with heart and the atmosphere it carries with it. This Hotel simply amplifies this feeling.

As usual we arrived with our bikes since we travel by bike and ushered immediately to a very beautiful room while our bikes were taken to a safe garage a short distance away.

Everything in the room was in excellent working condition and the general cleanliness of the room was not only real but also in appearance. The hotel structure is complicated but beautifully restored to reflect its original use. Since we were on the first floor we never used the elevator which takes you to the higher floors. There is also a delicious coffee making machine adjacent to the lobby for the complimentary use of the guests which makes better coffee than you can buy in a cafe. The breakfast offers a sumptuous buffet including non Italian varieties of meats, eggs, fresh squeezed juice etc. including the customary cakes of the Italian breakfast but in this case home made by the lady who serves the breakfast. An elegant touch...I say!

This brings us to the quality of the staff. All five who we met were helpful proactively and on demand with practical and useful information about the town and in our case extremely useful road instructions towards our next destination to Sarnano trying to avoid the bike obstructions called "tunnels" and "autostrate".

Don't look elsewhere for a better hotel in Ascoli and if you are lucky to get a room, enjoy the hotel and the town thoroughly.

Room Tip: Ask the staff and they will help you choose in advance.
