“Villa Fortezza is a very special place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2012

I wish I didn't have to tell about Villa Fortezza, because I wish I could keep this place all to ourselves. We traveled here to seek out a bridge painted by my father in 1962. He painted it from a postcard his mother had given him of her hometown, Ascoli Piceno. It has hung over our family's mantle for 50 years. We have always fantasized about visiting here one day. Do you believe in divine appointments? We do. After arriving by bus, walking with our suitcases, a car drove up and we were told to wait on a bench for Salvatore to pick us up. He made us feel like family, welcoming us with wine and aperitifs. Our room was beautifully appointed, immaculate, modern with sweeping vistas of the town. The villa is like a museum of captivating collections and soulful art. In every corner of the house and garden, there is another surprise and joy. Breakfasts were served with every attention to detail and love. This was the best place we visited traveling 3 weeks in Italy! No words can express our gratitude to Salvatore

Wonderful location above Ascoli Piceno with access to the centre of town by a long flight of steps (over 400). Modern, spacious villa filled with captivating and quixotic works of art and sculpure both inside and in the garden. Salvatore is a perfect host, welcoming arrivals with tea and Italian cakes. Bedrooms are sylish with comfortable beds; mine had a smart bathroom just down the corridor. However, there was no one to make up the bed over the weekend I stayed there. Breakfast is served on a long table which stretches from just outside the dining rooom into the lovely garden. On warm late summer's morning, it was idyllic. Breakfast itself is excellently varied with Italian specialities. Practise your Italian with other guests, or go half and half with English and Italian. The overall experience of staying there is relaxing. You could lounge around the garden and take in the view or saunter down to the smallish town of Ascoli, with lots to see and a great atmosphere. This is a B&B in a category all of its own

What a joy! The wonderful adventure starts with the warm welcome you receive the moment you arrive at Villa Fortezza. As you take in the commanding view over Ascoli Piceno, Salvatore gently leads you thru the lookinglass and "things get curioser and curioser." Mannequins beckon, curios abound, whirleygigs hang suspended from the ceiling, a dentist's chair invites...and then on up to your room which is simply but carefully executed with great attention to every detail. Comfort is foremost with each bedroom and adjoining bathroom uniquely decorated...modernistic yet practical touches abound with bathroom and shower fixtures conveying a futuristic appeal even though this architectural gem was masterfully executed by Salvatore's uncle nearly 50 years ago. Breakfast in the morning is an array of treats reflecting Salvatore's thoughtful personality - hand crafted jams, warm croissants, an assortment of cereals to fresh garden fruit, various yogurts and piping hot coffee served out on the patio as Dylan's "Self Portrait" plays on the gramaphone nearby. And now, as you look out onto thier parklike setting around you, playful kittens and a plump bunny rabbit are seen carousing amidst Federica's objects d'art. Then before you head down into the lovely historic town, settle into one of their comfortable hammocks, curl up on an outdoor couch or climb on and swing in the breeze. Take the steps down to town and stroll thru the two main piazzas of this beautiful historic town. Be sure to try cucina tipica at Osteria del Cigno, a small trattoria near Piazza Roma that serves delicious lunch and dinners frequented by locals. Thus, for a transcendant experience in a remarkable part of Italy, be sure and make room for Villa Fortezza in your next vacation plans.

Simply perfect!
Salvatore is a great host, and Villa Fortezza is a wonderful place to stay!

- really cool house, with awesome furniture and a lot of art
- waking distance to the city center - very close, you only have to walk down (or up) around 300 stairs, but it's worth it! :-)
- nice breakfast on the terrace (always with good gramophone records playing in the background)
- wonderful garden (with a swing!) with a great view on the old town and the mountains! We loved to sit there and relax (and watch the cute little rabbit that lives on the balcony...)
- great restaurant recommendations from Salvatore

Book it, you won't regret it! We will for sure come back.

Oh how we loved our stay here. The house was so artistic and we kept discovering more and more. I am inspired! Perched above Ascoli it is so calming to relax in the cool of the garden and survey the view. Then to descend to the town by the steps (remember, what goes down has to go up) and eat, drink and enjoy the city. Do go there and enjoy the wonderful hospitality of Villa Fortezza.

Salvatore made us welcome from the moment we arrived. Villa Fortezza is in a magical setting with fantastic views over Ascoli Piceno. Everything at the Villa was great during our 3 day stay. Our room was tastefully decorated with a very modern bathroom and beautiful views. Each morning, breakfast in the garden was casual and relaxing and, once again, Salvatore went out of his way to provide a scrumptuous meal. The town centre is an easy 15-20 minute walk down the stairway which is accessed via a side gate from the Villa. Ascoli Piceno is a great town and we were certainly sorry to leave at the end of our 3 days.

Room Tip: We chose the City Room which had lovely views.

Everything that was said about Salvatore and his home is true. I have been to many places with excellent reviews and never felt so home-like as here. The views, the room comfort, the breakfast, oh, the breakfast, we have never had one like this in a B&B. All are great. But the most important thing is that the host is so warm and generous, so accomodating, that you feel compelled to come back. My wife felt a bit cold and was also concerned about our 2 y.o boy. Even though it's the middle of May, Salvatore turned on the heat. We were quite late for breakfast the first day, but he still welcomed us with a smile. He inspires such a joy to live ....
I think that everyone who is new to this business should come here and learn how to be a perfect host.
