We have had a lot of mediocre pizza in Alassio over the years, so I agree with other reviewers that this is a place to put on your short list. The staff is quite pleasant, the restaurant is attractive and welcoming and the pizza is rather good. But the raves seem a little too generous.
We also had a very lovely arugula and Parmesan salad which was a great starter and some splendid fresh pineapple for dessert. We will go back and try some of their pasta dishes. The bread offered as a side was rather bland, but we didn't need bread with pizza.
The ingredients on top of the pizza were of high quality, and the crust was firm and of a pleasant texture. I don't know what it is, however, perhaps the local water in the dough, but once you have had pizza in Napoli, it is hard to find anything else on the same level.
Almost everyone loves pizza; it is a fine inexpensive meal and evokes as much local loyalty as sports teams. Part of its lure may be the unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere where you are so close to the food, an informal and friendly atmosphere and everyone has to wait equally for their warm pizza to come to the table.
The folks at La Lanterna work hard and deserve respect. We will go back, but we are still looking for even better pizza in Liguria.
