When first confronted by this b & b I thought 'What had we let ourselves in for? It was on a small street that was dirty looking and looked seedy and the building looked worn down from the outside. However once inside we were greeted by a simply lovely room with a gorgeous bathroom and the most lovely landlord you could ask for. He asked us what time we would be up and he had cooked us croissants fresh that morning which were simply gorgeous. When we left he even gave us a lift to the bus stop at no cost. He was a great guy and I urge everyone to book this place. It really is lovely and he is just amazing and I would go back here in a heartbeat.

a friend and i stayed at piccolo gellia in summer 2008 and we had an amazing time. we booked online and arrived a lot later than we indicated on the website, because we didn't know it would take us so long to get there. we arrived around 10 pm after traveling all day and took a taxi to the b&b, because, as students living in italy, we knew it's hard to find places. The b&b is located near the train station, but pretty hard to find if you don't know the way. However, the location is beautiful and enchanting in the heart of agrigento. you really get the feel of living in that city. the owner (i don't remember his name) let us in, even though it was so late and was very accommodating and hospitable. he told us he didn't think we were coming, but our room was still ready, clean and welcoming. we didn't have to deal with the language barrier, because we both spoke italian, but the owner did indicate that he doesn't speak english well. after we put our bags in our room, we asked the owner if he knew of a place to eat that late. he, himself, drove us to a restaurant that was still open and told us that he would come back and pick us up. after our meal, he drove us around the valley of temples and all around the old part of town, sharing with us a wealth of knowledge. we stayed at piccolo gellia two nights. he said his daughter would make breakfast for us until 10 because he had to work, and if we wanted to sleep in past 10, we could go down to the coffee bar on the corner and get breakfast and coffee there on his tab. i thought this was a nice gesture and very flexible of him. on the day of check out he let us leave all our baggage in our room. he even let us use the room (showers/naps) until later afternoon.
in the end we were on a more personable and friendly level with him than typical guests. we had a great time and were interested in what he had to say about the area. we felt like we got a good look at the life and culture of sicily, which is the best thing that we could have hoped for in our vacation. i recommend piccolo gellia if visitors are looking for a more personable and informal atmosphere, although lack of italian knowledge could be a difficulty.

Piccolo Gellia is not very easy to find as there is only a small sign along the shops pointing us upstairs into the hostel. The area outside the door were crowded with flies in the summer. We quickly made our way in.

It is a small hostel and the 9 of us booked a 2bed, 3bed and 4bed rooms for ourselves. The bathrooms were very spacious and clean. Although it looks a little dark inside the rooms, they were all clean and facilities were adequate. (e.g. hairdryer for the girls.)

Location wise, it is a short 10min walk out to the bus and train station. Also, there are many restaurants along the street where the hostel is.

The hostel staff was very friendly and welcoming. He tried to help us with our directions to the Valley of the Temples and kept apologizing for his inadequate command of English. It was not too bad, we could understand most of what he was saying. In the morning, he also brought us to the cafe nearby for breakfast. Interesting!

Overall, it was a worthy hostel to go to and we enjoyed our stay there!

In the first place we booked a room in Villa San Marco, in the middle of the Valley of the Temples, but the owner Vincenzo Campo, advised us that because we were on foot, we may be better off in a new B&B in the centre of Agrigento, which had just reopened, as this was the orginal B&B where he had started. We though this would be fine. But problems started when we were told we could stay here for the same price, which was 70 euro per night, and we found out ourselves that on the webiste of Piccole Gellia, the price for a double room was only 60 euro's! But fortunately this was settled before going there. When we arrived at the Picccolo Gellia, we were glad that it was located in the middle of the centre of Agrigento, just off the Via Atanea, the main street. The building was also beautiful, but the service was definetely not! When we got there, we had to explain several times that we had booked a room here. The owner was confused, spoke no English and did not try to understand our Italian. He even asked if we were married and kept pointing at his own wedding ring, while we had already booked a double room and this was never asked! Finally he let us in, understood that we had a booking and it became clear that he was trying to ask if we wanted a double room, well, yes, that is what we booked! The room was not at all prepared and hardly cleaned. It was like this man had forgotten that he run a B&B and treated us like intruders in his home, which made us feel very unwelcome! The building was also not ready yet, all the while he was still renovating the whole place, which gave a lot of noise. The room was simply dirty, with dust and gravel piles everywhere, open electrics, it smelled moldy, and the linnen was also not clean. The bathroom was even worse, there were wholes in the walls and ceiling, the toilet was placed in a corner behind the shower, which meant you had to stand in the shower to go to the toilet! When we tried to take a shower, the whole construction collapsed and the drain was clogged! The only positive thing was the breakfast, which was very good and with fresh products, which came from the Villa San Marco. But then again when we wanted to pay, he had no idea how much we had to pay, so we had to explain to him that we had already made a downpayment. But then when when we gave him 60 euro, he didnt have the change of 7 euro's and had to change in a shop down the street. He came back with a hand full of 1 and 2 cent coins, and still a few euro's missing. We didn't even care and were just very happy to leave this place as quick as we could. Fortunately we only stayed here one night, but else we would have definetely have left and looked for anohter place! Maybe all these problems are due to the fact that it isn't at all finished yet, but all the same I would strongly advise to look for another B&B than this one!!

  • Liked — The location and the breakfast
  • Disliked — The lack of service and the fact that it was dirty and dangerous
