Owner description: Built to honor the god Hercules in the early 6th century, this is Agrigento's oldest temple that was constructed over a structure of 38 columns, of which only eight are still standing.

The Temple of Hercules sits upon a rise with a spectacular view of the Mediterranean and the valley in the foreground. Get your guide book "The Valley of the Temples of Agrigento" Discovering Ancient Akragas and read during your walk.

It would have been great to see it fully restored with a roof and internal decorations as it did in its heyday. Well preserved and a fantastic photo opportunity. Around it are old olive trees and wild flowers everywhere. The view of Agrigento on the higher hill were superb. Views of the sea and surrounding countryside were also very good. Dont miss it

Aside from all the blocks and parts of columns strewn around, there's not much left, but the eight upright columns are impressive, especially in late afternoon sunlight with the city of Agrigentol across the way on the hilltop, and the presentation of information in Italian and English is helpful.

This is one of the temples that had totally collapsed. Constructed about 500BC, it is the oldest temple in the valley and also one of the larger temples constructed by the Greeks. Nearby is the former home of Sir Alexander Hardcastle, an English Captain who retired here and organised the re-erection of 8 of the temples columns in 1923.
