I expected Acqui Terme to be some little village on the top of a hill where therapeutic waters were naturally flowing. Boy, was I wrong. Not in a bad way, but the town has a history of providing waters to help everyone from soldiers to the rich and famous in the old days. It has become a sprawling town with appears to be the biggest swimming pool in Europe.
Hotel Acqui is a small hotel tucked in off the main street. You kind of have to look for the signs. It is very clean and everyone who works there is very friendly. There is not a lot of English spoken by the staff, but definitely enough to get by. They showed us to a lovely room that was very clean and roomy. They had to turn the AC on at the front desk, but once the did, the room chilled down nicely as it was quite warm out.
We went to dinner at a lovely restaurant on the street. Everything was great until about 11 p.m. that night when I had excruciating stomach pains. I wound up going to the hospital at 4 in the morning and was finally released. It was a pretty good experience considering the facts and they released me about 1130 after doing a bunch of tests. They told me no charge, it is all free in Italy. This would have been a $3,000 stay in...I expected Acqui Terme to be some little village on the top of a hill where therapeutic waters were naturally flowing. Boy, was I wrong. We got back to the hotel about noon, and Ms. Giana, the owner, was there wondering where we were at breakfast. After we related that we were at the hospital, she insisted on making a breakfast for my wife (I couldn’t eat). She made her eggs and toast and gave her some fresh fruit. She couldn’t have been more thoughtful.
Ms. Giana also helped us with our massages explaining which ones were the best deals. She saved us some money there too.
Having slept in the next day too, we missed breakfast. As we were coming down to check out at noon, Ms. Giana asked where we were at breakfast again. We told her we needed sleep and she insisted on deducting the breakfast from our bill even though I insisted she charge us. She was truly a gracious host.
The hotel is very clean, and they have a small spa on the top floor. Every single person that works there was so kind and helpful, even if they didn’t speak good English. This hotel is only rated a 3 star I believe, but it has 5 star service, there is no doubt about it!!More
