We spent a pleasant rainey lunchtime here. A couple of beers and a sp[ot of lunch. Smoked mackerel salald for me and scampi and chips for him.... Gosh don't knowhow many they were expecting to feed... BIG portions of lovely fresh food. Busy pub/diner with locals and tourists, children wlecome, toilets spotless. Lad behind the bar was a comic, chatty but not forward and always knew when to tell the male patrons where the gents was... Nope have no hesitation recommending here.

On Wednesday of this week 15/08/2013 we were on holiday in Cornwall staying at a great holiday cottage in Lanjeth just outside St Austell. Wisteria cottage Lanjeth Farm. We went to Charlestown for the afternoon to discover more of lovely Cornwall and being at the harbour for some time we ate and had a couple of drinks in The Pier House Hotel. Me and my better half had the Meat platter and our boy had Gammon. The platter contained a slice of Beef and a slice of Ham and a dollop of what according to the menu was Coronation Chicken. Now the beef and Ham were fine there was a little Salad and a bread roll so not much can go wrong there but both of us were ill Thursday and this was the only meal that could have caused it as the boy was fine but it seems the chicken could have been from the Coronation. WE will undoubtedly swerve this site in future. Bar man although very busy was quite lacking. Some Americans visiting waited over 20 mins for a bottle of wine he forgot about them, The place was busy we noted the Boss who was sat upstairs watching this on cctv came down to tell 1 of the other waitress's to go and serve someone when he could have quite easily done it himself instead of sitting out of the way and checking up on the staff. I am a Licensee myself and know about customer service. This place needs a refresher.... beware

My husband and I booked for 7 pm but arrived early, we waited in the bar area with olives and a menu :), very relaxed atmosphere although a formal dining room with comfortable seating. Some people dressed for dinner, some were holiday casual style. The waitress was very attentive and gave us tips on the local area. We only had one course as it had been a pasty day but that course filled us. Plaice cooked to perfection and belly pork sumptuous and plentiful we will definitely return. There could have been a bit more fish variety on the menu though considering they specialise in it. It also wouldnhave been nice to have a seat at the window since there were some available however it was covered in insects and we were probably better off :). We later paid a visit to the Tallships Creamery near the car park and oh boy the best ice cream flavours we have ever tasted. A wonderful evening in Charlestown.

Haven't actually been there for a while but tend to make an annual pilgrimage when I feel like a bit of spoiling. Years ago, I remember asking the chef after a great meal, why they were quite so generous with the vegetables they served up as a matter of routine.....usually around six different dishes of delicious vegetables . His response was simply that he didn't want any customers to leave feeling hungry. No chance of that!!
I do think the amounts are a bit less these days...but still pretty good.
I love the lobster...just seems right, somehow, so close to the beach and the waves. But there's always a good mix of standard steaks and interesting variances on classics.
I've been there for quiet, intimate anniversary meals, family celebrations and larger staff outings. Always good, with excellent service, wonderful food, great atmosphere. Hope it doesn't change...still going strong despite a number of other eateries opening up in recent years.
Keep it up Pierhouse.
