“The most beautiful town at Corsica”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

We were surprised when we arrived at the hotel. First, the town is beautiful, and hotel is very nice and has an excellent location. We had a little problem with parking, because the hotel does not have enough parking spaces for all guests. The rooms are very pleasant, the staff is very friendly. We used the internet access. Given that one day was windy and the waves were big on the sea, we used the swimming pool of the hotel, which is on an outstanding location with stunning views. The whole place is very quiet, pleasant and nice.

This is pretty much a no frills place and will feel very familiar to Americans, as it has a kind of motel feel. Which is not to denigrate it. Hotel Kalliste is in an excellent and sunblessed location in Porto, and all rooms appear to have an excellent view. Ours certainly did. Also, by European standards, they are quite large. If you need to do a few sun salutations and such before breakfast, there is ample room. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. English is spoken. The breakfasts are lovely, and there's a choice of indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is provided. However, I'm saving the best for last--which is the pool. I recommend a quick swim just before sunset. The views from this pool are unbelievable.

We stayed a total of six nights at this hotel in Room 50 and woke each morning to the most brilliant panorama... a 240 degree view across the bay, the river, the mountains and the Genoese watch tower. The sun also sets directly across from where you can sit and watch it go down in peace.
To get this view etc., it is essential that you find a room on the upper section of the hotel, the block set high behind the reception. Rooms 50 to 54 will give the best views. The rooms are spacious. The bathroom has a separated WC.
Unusually for a Med country, the room even has a carpet!
The hotel decor is getting tired and is ready for a refit, but I don't go on holiday to sit in my room. Once you have seen the view you quickly forget. The hotel is clean. Towels and linen changed and the beds made up, the room swept and tidied EVERY DAY. There is also a lift (useful for my recent knee injury).
The staff were helpful in finding us a further hotel near the airport for the last night's stay, a Hotel Poretta in Lucciana. Don't bother with that one as the staff are totally ungracious and weird.
We didn't breakfast at Kalliste and as a non wheat-eater I found a decent breakfast difficult to obtain throughout the resort as the French find it impossible to make an omelette before mid day.
Research showed me that Porto was built specifically for tourism. This made me think twice about going. Don't let it influence you. The place is pretty and comfortably bustling enough to be interesting. There are splendid (if a little expensive) boat trips, boats for hire, diving and all sorts of other activities.
The surrounding restaurants are mostly very good if a little too consistent in the menu. You'd think that the French tourists only ever ate pizza, but better food can be found with a little diligent selection.
The average tourist was quite ordinary, seemingly middle-class, lots of couples of indeterminate age (like myself) with a fair smattering of families with mostly well-behaved children and enough money-ed elegance scattered amongst us to make it interesting. No-one should feel out of place here.
The only real downside to Porto is the arduous mountain road that leads you there. Spectacular for the passenger but for the driver it’s a bit like a go-kart track. With go-karts coming the other way too.
Go to Porto!
Stay at the Hotel Kalliste!
Eat out at the Sol e Mare by the harbour (amazing salads in the upper restaurant area)
You will NOT regret it.

Room Tip: Try to get any of numbers 50 to 54. 40 to 44 are nearly as good. Room 50 is best in house for views...

From our room we had a beautiful view over the sea and the little village of Porto. The hotel is in walking distance of restaurants, the harbour and beach. Toilet and bathroom are seperated: great! People at the reception were friendly. Porto has a parking problem, so it is luxious to have a parking place that is only for hotel guests. We were really satisfied.

Room Tip: Rooms in the higher building have a beautiful view

We stayed here for three nights with our three year old child. The location is unbeatable, and they have private parking.
The room was spacey, but unfortunately not very clean. There was dust everywhere, even on the bathroom lights at the sides of the mirror over the sink (so absolutely visible even for a lazy maid). The carpet needed a steamcleaning really badly, and it was the first time I worried about bed bugs – which we didn’t get. Also, there was mold on the tiles around the bathtub.
The upsides: it was quiet, we had a nice, big balcony with oceanview, and the people at the front desk were helpful and spoke English well.
I would stay here again if I didn’t get a room in one of the other hotels nearby.

even if in the passed year I stayed in the biggest building of the two of Kalliste, this year I was in the smallest one , right near the street. The room 102 was over the reception and over the dehor.
every morning 7 am you will be awaked by people of the hotel that are pushing more than 80 chairs on the floor, to dispose them around the tables for breakfast. The shower is black-moldy filled on the ground, there is no place to put a soap or a shampoo when you are taking the shower, even the arm for the shower do no exist, you must keep it in your hand! ridicoulus ! a lamp of the mirror was missing, has never been replaced.... the bed : like all furniture is yaer 70 or like that.No matter if the mattress has also those years, the cover-matress was of an awful yellow circles, sweat or something else? the coils of the mattress will keep you awake all night, pushing your back ,making you assume a U position, very relaxing (my weight is 70 kgs..).
PLUS? good view from the terrace, enough space in room, but these are not the first things to evaluate. in the neighborhood will find better place to rest (at less).

We were so looking forward to staying in Porto for 2 straights nights after being on the go for more than 7 days between the French Riviera and Corsica. But when we arrive, we were told that we could only spend 1 night at this hotel because the next night they had no rooms for us, we had to move to another hotel. away from the ocean. (that is one of the reason why we wanted to stay there) We had reserved this hotel through our travel agent couple of months ago and it was all paid for and confirmed. No one advised us of this change. We argued with him and finally he told us that he had accepted a tour bus the week before and needed to 2 rooms for these people. By this time, the tone went up quite a bit. They told us they tried to book us for 2 nights in a row at other hotels but everything was booked up. The staff were very rude...let's say they were everything but friendly. At some point, we told them we would report them to the tourist office, apparently they don't care. Then they threatened us to call the police , we told them to do so, that what they were doing was wrong and unethical. By then, they just left the front desk and left us by ourselves. So we went up to check the rooms, decided with the other couple that we were traveling with that these rooms were not up to our standards (we were not in an renovated room, rooms were in a sorry.shape) and that we did not want to be threated like this. We walked to the adjacent hotel, found 2 very large and clean rooms with a very nice view of the ocean for the same price and best thing is they were available for the 2 nights (The staff did not work very hard to find us a room did they???) So we stayed at the Hotel Subrini and did enjoy a great stay in Porto. The people in Porto are very nice and make you feel welcome. So please don't ruin your vacation, stay away from this hotel.
