“A wonderful vacation in Dubrovnik”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

Wonderful Hotel, wonderful stay! Staff was top quality helpful and friendly. The Hotel is brand new (built in 2009) . 3 Pools, (2 for Kids) and 1 where kids are not allowed. Beautiful rooms, with very modern furniture and amenities. Coffee machine, Frigobar, bath tub, Large Shower, 2 toilets , big Balcon (junior Suite) . Sport Center, Shops, Supermarket a extra luxury SPA. Transportation to and from Dubrovnik either by bus or by boat (paying but much cheaper than taxi fare) . Bus and boat are to be reserved in advance. My wife and I and the couple of our friends were immediately given a free upgrade to a Junior Suite Room, which was simply wonderful. My friends were there 7 nights, we were there 12 nights. Both couples of us were discussing before leaving to come back next Year. in the Hotel are as well 6 Restaurants, some beautiful Bars, Italian Gelateria. All services and amenities at pool or at the wonderful private Hotel Beach. Not to Miss. Radisson Blu which is normally very good quality, was in this case simply excellent, service outstanding, rich breakfast. The place is just wonderful in front of some of the many (1200 ) croatian Islands. Just one question for the future? Croatia entered the EU on July the first 2013. Will this lead to a big prices hike, like was the case few years ago in Italy, Spain, France etc. etc.?

Room Tip: We were upgraded so we had a wonderful suite. In any case standard and deluxe rooms have the same ve...

We have just returned from our 2nd visit to this hotel in as many years and all I can continue to say about the place is "Wow!". However, that probably wouldn't be too helpful as a review so I will try and expand a bit.

Short review: Great place. Cannot fault the staff, the facilities or the location but you have to be a bit savvy to have some variety for dining and to keep the costs from spiralling. Also, don't think that Croatia, and particularly Dubrovnik is cheap. It isn't , and in a lot of cases the resort and local restaurant prices matched those in London (!)

Longer review:

This review is based on 2 people staying in a deluxe room on a half board basis. (However a friend stayed in one if the residencies with his family last year and had a similarity wonderful experience)

The hotel is located 45 minutes from Dubrovnik airport and 20 mins from the Old Town The spectacular hillside journey from the airport to the resort makes it worth booking alone.

The hotel is ideally placed for those wanting a 'get away from it all ' type holiday but also has plenty of activities on offer (eg. tennis, squash courts kayaking) for those feeling more energetic.

The resort is big and self sufficient in that you would never have to leave the resort if you so wished and has 3 swimming pools as well as a very good beach area (alas pebbles and not sand but guess you cannot have everything) so even though it attracts all sorts of holiday types (couples / families / large groups) you never feel the resort is busy or overpacked.

However like many of the reviews here we found the 3/4 restaurants a bit limiting in choice for lunch and dinner over a week (and not to mention pricey - The Butcher's Grill steak house had prices to match and beat The Hawksmoor chain of steak houses in London. Crazy and way overpriced.)

So for dinner we ate out - most cab fares were about £10 each way and £20 to the Old Town - but the restaurants we visited had a warmer ambience and offered better value and helped steer off cabin fever.

For lunch we found ourselves mainly eating at the Maraska Lounge bar as we found the service more attentive there and the area was cooler and more pleasant for dining with great views across the sea.

For local restaurants I would recommend Kasar, Ankora and Gverović-Orsan all in the Zaton bay area which is 5 mins from the hotel. (see my reviews for these) In the Old Town there are many places to choose from - all looked rather touristy and 'samey'. We had originally booked at Nautika but we decided not to go 'fancy' after our experience at Villa Ruza (see review) but we did have a peek when we were there though and the location looked incredible but the menu was the most expensive we had seen during our stay (eg one set menu was £150 exclusive of drinks) and quite frankly we lost no sleep having not dined there. Besides you can walk up and stand literally next to the tables there and take in the views with a coffee or an Ice Cream.

For the active sort the facilities onsite are great having two gyms - the smaller one attached to the spa opens at 7am and the larger one (more selection of weight machines) opens at 8am. If I was being slightly picky I would have wanted more choice of equipment in the smaller gym (a rowing machine and a bike machine for example)

We tried some spa treatments and they were exactly what you would expect from a 5 star spa resort. The Hot rocks treatment was a revelation!

The resort has an independent supermarket on site which offered good value on the basics such as water and snacks as well as having a good selection of food for the self catering holiday makers (although it did seem to have a poor choice of meat and fish)

The staff were great - everyone always had a smile and a hello and were willing to do that extra bit for you. You cannot under estimate how much this enhances a holiday experience.

Our room was well appointed and the wifi worked very well across the whole resort - dropping on rare occasions in some remote spots (little pockets on the beach for example) but not so much that it was a nuisance.

Last year we stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed it so much that we went back this year for a full week. If you have any worries that this resort won't delver then don't just be wary that that this part of Croatia can be pricey matching London prices most times - sometimes justifiably and sometimes not. If you can manage that then you're in for a great holiday.

Room Tip: Go for deluxe sea view if you can afford it - the higher the floor the better.

I was happy to read that you enjoyed our pools, spa and the service team in the overall resort. I will pass on your excellent comment of the resort to the team. I do agree with you Dubrovnik as a whole is the most expensive place to visit in Croatia.

We had a beautiful apartment very clean, pleased we had the sea view. Plenty of pools and free sun beds. No beach but nice place to sit next to the sea, great for swimming, water so warm and clean. Pleased we had half board as food expensive. It was a buffet meal and a very high standard, everything very fresh with plenty of choice, drinks quite expensive £8 small glass of wine. Very relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Sea view a must, don't know what hotel rooms like as we stayed in two bed apartment, plenty of s...

Second year staying at this Hotel on 6th (club) floor. Almost a wonderful stay. Glorious weather. Staff very helpful. Deluxe room was spacious and kept very clean for us every day, plenty of soaps, shampoo ect left in bathroom. A fantastic fruit display left in our room most days. We enjoyed breakfast up on the terrace every day at 7am when it was peaceful and quiet and we could just gaze out and watch the world go by. Last year the shuttle boat to Dubrovnik Old Town ran through out the day but this year it was more limited. We used the bus on one occasion which was good, but we would have preferred to have used the shuttle boat, but the times it left and returned didn't fit in with what we wanted to do.
The restaurants were disappointing and expensive. We felt the same last year, the exception being "Tartufo" and we ate there most nights and enjoyed all our meals there. This year we found "Tartufo" disappointing. The first few days we found the menu ok but then the menu changed and we found it difficult to pick something we liked. We only had a starter and a main each and a bottle of water. We didn't order dessert because of price, we had no alcohol and yet our bill ranged from £80-£100+. We tried some of the other restaurants but found them overpriced and if I am being honest very average at best. Some guests were very upset at being caught out by being offered at the fish restaurant " Catch of the day" with out realising they would be charged per. kilo as the price was not on the board outside the restaurant.

We visited the Island opposite and had a really good meal at "Villa Ruza" 2 starters,1 main, 1 dessert,1 glass of wine and coffee each this cost us £97 for two. A separate charge for speedboat across from hotel which was great as it was a choppy and we were bouncing across the waves.
I would love to come back again to this Hotel as it's position is fantastic, but RD would have to up it's game where their restaurants are concerned.

It was a pleasure to have you stay with us, and thank you for your feedback.

I was happy to read that you enjoyed the overall resort and thank you for returning for a second year. I had noted that you enjoyed the club floor with the VIP breakfast on the rooftop. We do normally change our menus two times per year in each of our restaurants including Tartufo. This year as per next year the cuisine will be "Modern French" as we have a new chef for Tartufo I am sure that you will enjoy his new menus next summer.

In regards to the seafood restaurant it state in writing on the menu the price for a kg of fish, the fish does change from day to day depending on what the fishman catches, all guests are told the price before cooking as at times the fish may be 1.2 kg or 1.5 etc and in turn the price may vary a little.

I do hope to welcome you back one day soon.

I see thare are many who agree with me here. The food is not great and the prices are not in context with what you get. And it costs money to travel to Dubrovnik to dine elsewhere. It really annoyed me, as I am used to more quality and value whan on holiday, for dining.
Otherwise, the satff were great, rooms were great, pools were great. Beautiful setting and very very safe.
I will not be going back though, becauise of the prices.

It was a pleasure to have you stay with us, I would like to thank you for your feedback.

Thank you for your comments that you enjoyed your room, pools and the resort on the whole. I have noted your comments regarding prices we offer a wide selection of outlets to choose from to fit all budget from a sandwich shop from 5 Euro to a Pizza at 10 Euro to a Tenderloin Steak in Butchers Grill for 20 Euro as examples for a five star hotel. I am sorry that you had a negative experience with our food quality as you are aware we do have a total of 6 restaurants to choose from, I will give your feedback to our Kitchen team and Exec Chef.

In regards to trip to Dubrovnik we do have a total of 8 trips per day to the old city at only 5 Euro p.p each way on our shuttle bus, naturally we try and keep the price as low as possible for the 20 min transfer.

I do hope to welcome you back one day soon.

My family of 4 have just spent 2 weeks at the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa and cannot say enough wonderful comments about the resort. The apartments are wonderful and spacious and they have many options depending on your requirments.
We never had a problem with the cost of food at the restaurants and after reading the previous reviews l am wondering if we had all stayed at the same resort! Obviously the food downtown was cheaper but they were not comparable with the food or service at the resort. We visited other 5 star hotels in Dubrovnik, Zagreb & Split and found the prices all comparable. Having lived in London, Sydney, Munich & Dubai, the prices being charged at the Radisson are absolutely reasonable.
We found the hotel simply stunninng and can highly recommend it. We will definately be back!

As a family of four we stayed on the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Sea View Residence apartments June/July 2013. We’d had a lovely holiday last year in a different part of Croatia and returned with high expectations.
The accommodation was first class – very spacious and clean with excellent views of the sea and local islands with daily maid service, free WIFI and air conditioning. The staff at the resort were very helpful and polite and it was great having towels provided at the pool and help with the sun umbrellas.
Our main issue with the holiday arose in regards to meals. We planned to do a mixture of self-catering and dining out. However, it was difficult to find out the prices in the restaurants – the menus were not openly published. This also caused us a problem as our children have food allergies and we like to see what is on the menu before booking however the local staff were helpful in this regard. The prices for drinks we felt were exorbitant, for example £8 for a glass of wine and £40 for a bottle of the cheapest local wine. At the Pizza/Pasta restaurant you could get a Pizza for just over £10, however there were bottles of wine on the menu for hundreds of pounds!
The quality of the food was ok, but not great. Certainly not what you would expect from a 5 star resort. The pizzas at the Pasta restaurant were good, the Dalmation food at the Market place was nice but expensive and the worst meal of the holiday was at the Butchers Grill - dry chicken and frozen chips. In summary, average food at extremely high prices.
Consequently the restaurants and bars did not appear to be well used, and in a lot of occasions there were more staff than clientele. Seems to me it would be a better strategy to lower the prices and fill the restaurant and bars.
There was a Konzum supermarket on site, which was fine for basics – bread, milk, cheese, ham, etc. However there was no raw chicken or meat to cook a meal with which is what we would expect from a supermarket for self-catering accommodation. There was a little frozen fish in the freezer, and, bizarrely, frozen pizzas, although no oven to cook them in the apartment and the cheapest bottle of local wine was over ten pounds. The Hotel Manager says he has no control over what the supermarket stock; we wondered whether it was planned that way so guests had to dine in the resort restaurants.
Fortunately we had a hire car and found a Konzum supermarket in the Gruz district of Dubrovnik, where we were able to stock up on provisions and bottles of local wine starting at a much more reasonable £5 per bottle. Once we found this we felt much relief, but the high prices in the restaurants meant that we did a lot more self-catering than we had intended.
We did not like how we did not feel the resort were open and honest about the prices –why were they not freely published outside each restaurant? There was a menu portfolio in the foyer of the main hotel, however again not all menus/prices were available.
The final example of this underhand behaviour was that despite checking our bill was fully clear the night before we left when we departed early the next morning we were presented with a bill for £6 for the Cleaning Kit we had used throughout the fortnight. This kit was in the apartment when we arrived and we did not see any information stating it was a “chargeable extra”. Why didn’t it get allocated to our bill on day one when we started using it? Really – after paying thousands of pounds for the holiday did they need to add it at the last minute? It left a very bitter taste in the mouth and we will not return.
We concluded that we are not part of their target market. Whilst this might be a good destination for a very short break, we would not recommend this holiday for a longer holiday.
