Scandic Talk
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Alvsjo
Reviewed June 6, 2010

My wife and I stayed here in early June.
When we checked in we found there were no towels in the bathroom but that was fixed very quickly. The room was clean and large, very quite with good block out curtains, flat screen TV, very large soft bed, (I noticed another reviewer did not like a soft bed but we do) big desk and a large and modern bathroom.
We also had free Wi-Fi or hard connection if you have your own laptop and breakfast included which was very nice with lots of food choices. It can get busy at breakfast at times. The hotel is situated in a very pleasant area with a big supermarket 5 minutes walk from the hotel.
Tip: How to get to the hotel by bus and train (cheapest way).Buy your Flygbussarna tickets online at http://www.flygbussarna.se (99 SEK Taxi to hotel is about 600 SEK) and take the bus to central station in Stockholm (a 35 minute ride). When you get there go down to the great hall downstairs or take the lift or escalator down and follow the signs to the commuter trains. On the way look out for a window selling tickets. Buy your train ticket (that will be 30 SEK per trip). If you are staying for 3 or 7 days you save a lot by buying a 3 day or a 7 day ticket). Follow the signs that lead you to tracks 13 & 14. You can take either train at those platforms and get off 3 stops later at the Älvsjö station. As you walk out the station doors you will see the sign that leads you to the hotel (a 5 minute walk downhill).

I picked this hotel because it is literally right next door to the Stockholm International Fairs Convention Center. I went to the 2010 ISMRM convention. The Alvsjo commuter rail station (part of the Pendeltag line) is within a short walking distance away (uphill to the station, downhill from the station to the hotel and convention center), and only two stops away from the Stockholm Central Station, which takes you to anywhere around Stockholm. Central Station connects with the Arlanda Express train to Arlanda Airport. The Alvsjo station, unfortunately, does not run any trains between 1AM and 5AM. So if you booked an early morning international flight, you need to plan around this problem. A Taxi from this hotel to Central Station would have cost some 300 Kronen, which I thought was outrageous for a ten minute trip. Since I had a weekly commuter pass already, I ended up checking out early, around midnight, to catch the last trains to the airport. And so I just napped at the airport (along with several other travelers with the same idea - Arlanda airport mostly shuts down overnight)

As for the hotel - well, it was very clean, and the beds and pillows were soft, and the service was very efficient. There was a funky glass shower which had minimal borders with the rest of the bathroom floor, so that water did tend to leak out all over.

The rooms have very dark curtains, so if you want to sleep in and catch up from jet lag, you can eliminate almost all the light in the room, which is nice.

The complimentary breakfast is excellent, lots of eggs, bacon, sausage, meatballs, cheese, preserved Swedish stuff (fish, etc.), cereal, juice, etc. And oh, lots of crusty Swedish bread. Yep, those Swedes sure like their bread thick and crusty.

The front desk staff was OK. Some were friendly, some not so friendly. Since most of them were young Swedish women, they were at least quite pleasant to look at, whateve their demeanor.

The hotel has a small workout area, but no pool. There is internet access, and two free computers near the front desk. However, to print out stuff, e.g., your online check-in boarding pass, you have to use a pay computer. Bummer.

But overall, this was a nice hotel, and very convenient if you are going to the convention next door.

It was easy to get there, even though it was far from Stockholm city. The hotel room was ok and clean, but the shower was not so good; the water was flooding to the room. The bed was soft and very nice, and we slept very well. Breakfast was ok, but not very multifaceted. But the stuff was rude, we didn´t get so good service in reception. They seemed to be very busy and hurried, even though we were the only customers...
The hotel was nice, but the stuff made us feel not welcome there.

It's right next to the International conference centre so for me it was a perfect location. But it's also easy to get to the city centre.
A very nice business hotel, good breakfast, good service, recommended.

My husband and I are just back from a long weekend in STockholm. The stay in the Rica was very pleasant and the first thing I have to compliment is: the staff (they offered a take away breakfast as we were leaving at 4.00 am, we got sandwiches, juice, fruit.) and the location. It is right in the middle of the shopping area. 15 min to the old town and 10 to the bus station and metro. the room was very small but didnt lack anything. the bathroom was also very small but had everything you needed. The room was very quiet which we really appreciated. Breakfast was quite nice, would have liked to see more pastries and some yoghurts. but had plenty of choice. would go back to it without a second thought.

Location is excellent. I expect most guests stay here because of the adjacent conference/exhibition centre, and in that respect the location couldn't be better. However if you're planning a trip into central Stockholm, the taxi fare is SEK 400-500, pretty expensive. There is a metro station nearby - Älvsjö, though.
The breakast spread is perfect, as was the food I had at the restaurant for dinner.
Reception is polite and efficient, if somewhat shortstaffed.
Only hitch was a mix-up with my laundry, but this was resolved.
Wi-fi connection in my room was perfect for catching up with work emails.

All in all a very good business hotel, if a little on the pricey side.

Spacious and very clean and modern room. Very quiet. Very generous breakfast buffet included in the price. The location (10 minutes by commuter train, which runs every 10 mins to the Central Station) means that this is probably not ideal if it's Stockholm's nightlife you are after, but it's ideal for business trips, or if it's daytime sightseeing you are after. Excellent value - especially for a place as expensive as Stockholm.
