Finca La Maroma
Reviewed July 10, 2012

The perfect getaway for anyone who wants to have solitude, glorious vistas, an oasis of a swimming pool, and clean comfortable self-catering accommodation. Great place to chill out or as a base to explore the region around Malaga. Tom and Mark, the hosts, do a great job settling guests in and making them feel at home. A special dinner for guests on our first night provided high quality home-cooked cuisine and local wines. As you approach the Finca, you can feel the stress of the world fall away. A wonderful part of our recent European holiday.

We stayed for 3 nights in a superior studio. We liked the place very much, on the other hand we missed something.. We found out what it was: there is no airconditioning in the studio's and there is no what we call, hotel service (daily cleaning, daily fresh towels, breakfast).

Beside of this everything is fine. Nice and good quality beds (the beds in the superior room are bigger), very good rain showers with enough pressure on the water, very nice pool, nice sunbeds, nice jacuzzi (sauna only for colder nights).

Nice honesty bar with very reasonable prices. Terrace very nice views for all studio's.

Tom and Mark are very kind and will help you with what they can. Very good advice and so on.

People must realize that nearest restaurants are 20 minutes by car (for that reason it is good that you are in a studio)...!

Conclusion for us: we will come back when there is airconditioning in the studio and hotel service (breakfast, daily cleaning with daily fresh towels and so on). Thanks Mark en Tom and all the best!

the Finca is a great old farmhouse that Mark & Tom have updated to provide modern amenities, while keeping the rustic charm of the house. rooms are good sized, with plenty of space, but it doesn't really matter, since we spent all our time either by the pool or on one of the several lounge areas. and with the remote location, it is possible to be naked on the entire property (if you like that sort of thing), which includes some short trails around the property. we also did some hiking up into the mountains on some really beautiful trails - they are well marked, easy to follow and offer stunning views of the countryside and the mediterranean.

restaurants are a bit of a drive, so it was nice to have mark & tom prepare dinner a few times, rather than cooking ourselves every night. the food was fine, but the best part of the dinners was sitting and chatting with the other guests. It was also fun to see people dressed in their outfits after being naked or nearly naked all day. :)

the parts that really matter:

the bed: great mattress, very comfortable. mark & tom will provide a top sheet in addition to the duvet cover if you prefer that.

the shower: unlimited hot water with decent pressure.

the kitchen: small, but fully functional, with gas stovetop. the only thing missing is an oven, which you probably don't need on vacation anyway.

tips: (these are not meant as negatives, just things i would have liked to have known beforehand)

the finca is *very* remote and involves driving on extremely narrow, curvy, dirt roads for about 20 minutes from the paved road. while not dangerous, so long as you drive slowly, it does mean the likely hood of some scratches/dents from branches or kicked up rocks on your rental car are high. you might consider getting the full damage waiver insurance (i think it's usually called "super collision damage waiver") for piece of mind.

the sewage system is not able to handle toilet paper (or any other non-human material), so you have to put it in a little bucket by the toilet. not really anything you can do about that, other than mentally prepare for it. lol.

it's not recommended to drink the water from the tap - so when you stop to do your shopping, buy a lot. it's a very dry, hot climate, so you will use more than you think. we went through about 1.5 liters per person per day. (an alternative is to boil the tap water for 2 minutes - we did this for coffee/tea and other cooking.)

ask about visiting the bodega bentomiz. we were the first guests to go there, and are pleased to report it was a great experience with an amazing owner who spent several hours showing us around her winery and letting us taste her wine. we managed to bring 26 bottles back home with us!

I am not a great fan of gay B&Bs. And this place was excellent. Wonderful atmosphere. Really nice, clean rooms. Superb food. Beautiful surroundings. If you want a busy night life, this is not the place for you! But if you value quality on all fronts, then come here. And yes, I'd love to go again.

If you are looking for a gay guesthouse in the South of Spain this is the place to stay. We stayed for three nights in a superiour studio at the end of our trip in Andalucia. The studio was very nice, and the location of the Finca is stunning. Mark and Tom are very helpfull hosts and can give you great tips (beaches, restaurants). We chose to head off to the beach during the day, but this is also a place where you can hang out at the pool (clothing optional) all day if you want to. Only bear in mind that it is located off the beaten track so you need to be okay with a short drive on a winding unpaved road. We will hopefully be back next year.

My partner and I just returned from a long Easter weekend break at Finca La Maroma, we had a fantastic time. This is a comfortable, gay-owned and operated, relaxing and completely de-stressing environment with several outdoor activities to keep anyone busy and fit - if you want to be active, it's equally the perfect place to chill and do nothing!

The Finca has been undergoing major renovation by the new owners. Updated and clean the building has been undergoing changes for quite some time; changes which are in character with the building, location and ensuring that their guests have a comfortable environment to stay (and with complimentary wi-fi throughout!). We met some lovely people staying there, some of whom were there on a repeat visit.

The rooms are well stocked with all the main necessities of a self-catering establishment. Coming complete with microwave, gas hob, toaster, kettle, full crockery set, pots/pans and kitchen towels the kitchen has everything that one would need to cook a delicious meal in the room. There are standard and superior rooms, but the quality of the beds, linens and furniture remains throughout. The superior rooms have a slightly larger living space and a king size bed. We stayed in the superior room on the upper level of the Finca, offering stunning views. Definitely recommended!

Whilst this is self-catering, they will provide guests with welcome baskets if requested in advance. For those times when it may not be possible to stop at a supermarket prior to arrival (like on a holiday or late night arrival), the welcome basket is definitely a must - providing you with all the basic necessities for the next morning! Additionally you can help yourself to the 'honesty' bar, whereby soft drinks and alcoholic drinks are provided in the gym/sauna area. Simply take what you want and write it in the book, paying on check-out. This is a great system allowing you to help yourself without having to ask for it.

The grounds are beautiful. Set on a hilltop they have views of the surrounding countryside and mountain. Couple of the things we enjoyed most were sitting by the pool and looking out over the hills, as well as having evening cocktails on one of the decks soaking up the sun and chatting with other guests. The jacuzzi also offers a great place to look out on the surroundings with a glass of champagne!

The owners (Tom and Mark) are extremely welcoming and will assist in any way possible, making your stay that much more enjoyable. They have quite a bit of knowledge of the local area should you be interested in bike rides (they have several mountain bikes for the guests), walking paths, trips to the local towns and beaches or if you want to venture into Malaga. They often cook for all of the guests at an evening meal either out by the pool or in their apartment (depending on weather) at a small charge (roughly 25 Euros). They will let you know in advance when these evenings are so that you (and them!) can plan ahead. They made a fantastic meal when we were there; 3 courses along with great wine, all included in the price. It was a great way to get to know the other guests in the hotel, so highly recommend it!

For those guests who don't have a hire car (we did, and recommend it if you want to venture out further than a run or a bike ride will take you), they provide you with a pickup service from the airport. If driving follow the directions they provide on the website closely; we did and had no problems finding the Finca.

Overall, a highly recommended place to visit and will definitely be going back! I've already told many of my friends all about it!

Thanks Tom and Mark!!!!

Room Tip: We stayed in room F, superior room on the top floor. There is a new casita being completed which is...
