PROBABLY COULD DO WITH SOME UPDATING. first impression of our room wasn't brilliant but it is an old building and cheap. The owner cooks everything from scratch and we were very impressed with the food. Young couple live in and run this place, their young children were so polite, as were their parents who were very tentative.

My wife fancied a short break to France at the end of January and, being big fans of the Logis de France chain, we thought we wouid give the Relais d'Ecouves a go.

From the outside, the hotel doesn't look all that much and, if I'm honest, looks a bit shabby but please don't let that put you off!

Firstly the staff, the hotel is run by a family who live on site. The relatively young proprietor was exceptionally friendly and made us feel welcome right away and showed us to our room.

This hotel only has 3 rooms, all of which are on the top floor - however, and dependant on your viewpoint this may be the most negative aspect of the hotel, to access the rooms you have to go outside the hotel (which would not be great if it were raining) , into a courtyard and climb some steps to the first floor. From the outside of the rooms, it gives the impression of an old-fashioned Motel such as you might find in the USA.

The room we were allocated was functional and are of the standard that you would expect of an average Logis. The bed was comfy and the shower / toilet was clean and well presented. The rooms do face the road, however it is a relatively minor "D" road the the noise from traffic is minimal.

Now, on to the food! The restaurant is large but split into several different rooms. During our stay, there were 2 large parties in the main rooms however the smaller dining room in which we were placed was relatively free from disturbance from the parties.

The carte offered many fixed price menus as well as the full al a carte. The range of choices is not brilliant but the food is very well presented and tasted excellent (I am writing this a few months after our stay so cannot remember exactly what we ate)

The wine list was very good, given the small size of the hotel and as is often the case it was hard to choose, although a nice wine from the Loire Valley won in the end.

After a very satisfying 4 course meal (well it would have been rude not to) we retired to bed and a very good sleep with no interruptions.

Breakfast in the morning was again well presented and was the standard French fare of croissants, bread, coffee etc.

All in all, if you are looking for a hotel near Alencon and have access to a car, I would strongly recommend this one.
