“An excellent 4 days: Good location, food, views, and safari experiences”
Reviewed July 18, 2010

My wife thinks I chose to stay at Dungbeetle River Lodge because of its amusing name. But besides the name, the place offers charm, convenience and comfort for a very reasonable price. It's a quality 4-star place, with large safari-themed rooms and delicious breakfasts. On the first day, we went on a day/night safari to nearby Schotia Private Nature Reserve where we saw lions, rhinos, warthogs and zebras in the wild. Another day we took a river cruise (boarding on the dock right behind the lodge) and climbed the massive sand dunes bordering the ocean. On the third day, our host took us on a day-long tour of nearby Addo Elephant National Park. We loved watching a baby elephant interact with the mother, and our host has the eyes of an eagle -- she even spotted a slow-moving dung beetle crossing the road. On our final day, we took a Port Elizabeth city and township tour, which added a cultural and social dimension. The Hewitts made our stay a very enjoyable experience.

We needed an impromptu accommodation and have landed in this beautiful Lodge. The owners were very informative and friendly to us, they did, despite the late time intensive for us.
The view of the river at breakfast was excellent.
The room was lovely fully equipped and very comfortable.
If we will go once again to the Addo Elephant Park, we will definitely stay there again.
Thank you for everything!

We did not stay at the Dungbeetle, but rather inside the SANS Addo Elephant Park accomodations. Unfortunately, we didn't have either cell or internet connectivity in our Addo accomodations, and realized late at night that we didn't know the time of our departing international flight the next morning. So we drive a few minutes out of Addo, in the total darkness, with the hope that a kind B&B or lodge owner would take mercy on us and allow us to use his/her Internet connection to check our flight schedule. The owners of Dungbeetle River lodge (Etta) did just that, even though they had already closed down for the night and they no doubt were less than happy about letting-in a total stranger from the darkness. The lodge is only a few minutes drive from the Addo gate. If this is how Dungbeetle treats non-paying passerbys, consider how well they treat their paying customers! THANK YOU DUNGBEETLE!

We stayed here for one night after our stay at Pumba, as we wanted somewhere close to the Addo entrance. After a wonderful self drive through the park, our stay at the Dungbeetle was just what we needed. The rooms are a bit tired but are very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was nice outside overlooking the river and we even had champagne as it was Valentine's Day! As was suggested here on TA we had a steak dinner at Grunters Pub (which we walked to ) and enjoyed it very much sitting outside with all the locals. This was fine for our one night's stay.

We had the three day package which was excellent value and included Addo Elephent Park, Scotia game reserve and a river cruise ( or we could have had the dune walk instead of the latter). We stayed in the rhino room which was very appropriate as we saw both white and amazingly a black rhino on our trips into the parks. Derek was a great guide and we had a very good full day in Addo; nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts are on a veranda overlooking Sundays river and are excellent. Etta and Derek are very knowledgeable about wild life and the local area generally. We ate at Grunters Pub, five minutes walk away and very good for steak and Elephants Footprint, 5 mins drive. Easily accessible just off the N2 East of Port Elizabeth at Colchester, Dung Beetle was a real find. Very relaxing accommodation with lots of comfy seats. Take lots of photos as you will have many opportunities afforded by getting very close to the elephants and lions (and many others). Derek and Etta have a land rover and minibus for their tours depending on daily numbers; we had Derek and the landrover all to ourselves and the southern Addo Park entrance is only 10 mins drive away making for a full day. The sand dunes are very impressive and stretch for 60 km (?) along the coast from Port Elizabeth. Swimming and canoeing possible from private jetty.

Recently enjoyed a far too short stay at Dungbeetle Hotel. The owners, Derek and Etta made everyone "feel at home" from the outset. Breakfasts were truly memorable eating homemade bread and preserves on the deck overlooking the river. Derek and Etta also organise excursions to the Addo Elephant Park which I can thoroughly recommend, what could be easier than a leisurely breakfast then off on a safari in Addo, with Etta as a very knowledgable guide, all from the Dungbeetle Hotel?
