My wife thinks I chose to stay at Dungbeetle River Lodge because of its amusing name. But besides the name, the place offers charm, convenience and comfort for a very reasonable price. It's a quality 4-star place, with large safari-themed rooms and delicious breakfasts. On the first day, we went on a day/night safari to nearby Schotia Private Nature Reserve where we saw lions, rhinos, warthogs and zebras in the wild. Another day we took a river cruise (boarding on the dock right behind the lodge) and climbed the massive sand dunes bordering the ocean. On the third day, our host took us on a day-long tour of nearby Addo Elephant National Park. We loved watching a baby elephant interact with the mother, and our host has the eyes of an eagle -- she even spotted a slow-moving dung beetle crossing the road. On our final day, we took a Port Elizabeth city and township tour, which added a cultural and social dimension. The Hewitts made our stay a very enjoyable experience.
