We had a fabulous 3 days at the Dungbeetle River Lodge. Both Etta and Derek are great hosts, very knowledgeable and made us feel very welcome. We can fully recommend the 3 day stay which includes, a private game Safari at Schotia, a full day at Addo and then the choice of the Dune Walk or river Cruise. Schotia was exciting as you got the chance to get very close to Lions, Rhino's and Giraffe's, to name but a few and our guide - Robert - was very informative and good fun. For the full day at Addo, Etta was our guide for the day and she was a font of knowledge, imparting all sorts of interesting stories and information about the amimals and the park. We all had to keep our eyes peeled for various game, animals and birds. and it wasn't long before we first saw Buffalo, Kudo, Eland etc but best of all loads of Elephants. The Elephants were amazing and it was a joy to see them, wild in their natural habitat with their young.

We also chose to do elephant bare back riding which again was fabulous but the downside was the 2hr drive to get there and back on roads where you can't go more than 20kms unless you have a 4 wheel drive car.

Finally, the local Pub, Grunters, is a must for dinner, as they really do cook the best steaks and all for £7.00 - yummy:)

We arrived on Sunday and Etta and Derrick invited us to their semi private Sunday evening braai. After breakfast Etta, who is extremly knowlageable about the Addo NP took us two for a 9 hours game drive. An experience we will never forget. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the river is also a big plus for Dungbeetle. There is one pub with good steaks in walking distance. Overall we were treated very personal and the next day we left we felt like from leaving friends.

The Dungbeetle River Lodge is the perfect place to be for a relaxed but also exciting holiday break. The hosts, Derek and Etta, are very friendly and warm-hearted people who made us feel welcome from the first to the last second of our stay. They arranged all our excursions (Addo, Schotia and the river cruise - all highly recommendable) and Etta herself was our guide for the full day Addo tour. Apart from being very experienced and knowledgeable, she really made this a very special day for us - and we were lucky enough to experience a very special elephant encounter!

Coming back to the lodge after the trips was always a big pleasure. It is a very nice and cosy place and everything is tastefully decorated with an eye for nice details. The rooms are all individually decorated and equipped and very well-maintained. Needless to say that everything is also spotlessly clean. One of the highlights of the day was certainly the very tasty and fresh breakfast on the deck overlooking the Sunday river. We can only recommend this place for everybody who wants to make the most out of their stay at Addo National Park and surroundings. Paul and Kerstin

We spent two nights at the lodge. We were treated like members of the family, with Derek, Etta and the staff (I should also mention Tombie) catering to all our needs. Rooms were large and very clean, breakfast or just "chilling out" on the deck was wonderfully relaxing and the lounges were very comfortable after nightfall. Our visit, guided by Etta, into Addo was wonderful and very reasonably priced - we must have seen 200 to 300 elephant - and the river cruise very peaceful (although quite pricey). The dunes are very impressive. Breakfasts were delicious and the local pub - Grumpers - very good value for money. Highly recommended to anyone who is just passing through, as we were, or who wishes to use it as a base from which to explore. Colchester, United Kingdom

We spent 3-days at DRL and we booked the 3-day special which we highly recommend. We were 4 in our party - Husband and I from California, USA and my brother and nephew from Cape Town, South Africa. Etta and Derek made sure all our bookings were arranged and had a lovely meal waiting when we arrived around 8pm from Cape Town. Etta also upgraded us to the Big Five Room at no extra charge! It was very homey and welcoming and we were able to retire soon after the long drive and woke up refreshed to a lovely breakfast on the deck overlooking the Sundays River before Etta drove us through Addo for our Game Drive. We loved it! we saw so many animals. The next morning after another scrumptious breakfast we went on the ferry down the river to the sand dunes which we climbed to the top (part of the 3-day special) accompanied by Tombie (Cute!) - later that day at 2pm to Schotia where we did the safari and dinner around the lapa. The whole experience was so great and well organized and we highly recommend it when visiting Addo. You will not be sorry. My nephew hopes to return in December this year with my niece who was not able to join us on our trip due to work commitments. Mary - Oakland CA

Derrick and Etta were the most congenial, caring, and accommodating innkeepers we've ever experienced. We enjoyed Etta's tour of ADDO ELEPHANT PARK immensely, found the Big Five Suite enchanting and enjoyed the home-style breakfast. I would recommend DungBettle River Lodge to anyone interested in a relaxing and respectful experience. They're the best.
