Stayed at DungBeetle river lodge for a couple of nights as a base to explore the Addo area.

The lodge itself is very well presented with lovely feature rooms and nice views out onto the Sundays river. Rooms and public areas were always spotless and the breakfast was delicious, especially the home made bread (fresh mushrooms instead of tinned would have made it even better).

When we left early on our day of departure we were even given breakfast supplies for our journey, staff couldn't do enough to help and give advice. Even though Derek & Etta weren't there, everything ran perfectly.

Grunters bar 200m down the road is fine for a bite to eat and a drink at very reasonable prices.

If in the area, give this place a try.

I stayed passing through from Grahamstown festival towards Knysna. The house is just a short hop from Addo elephant park, the room was extremely comfortable and the terrace overlooking Sundays river and the sand dunes was very peaceful. Derek and Etta were a great source of advice for the park and nearby activities and I only wish I had been able to stay longer to do more (swimming in the river, hiking in the dunes, eating the delicious breakfast...)

Thank you Etta and Derek.

Etta & Derek are exceptional hosts: they produced delicious treats, managed to find so many animals on game drives and opened their hearts and home to us. The dungbeetle River Lodge has location, location, location with those stunning views and dunes plus an abundance of activities nearby. We would love to visit again :)

we just stayed with our son 3 days in dungbeetle lodge. The place was perfect; the rooms are full of african atmosphere and decoration. The whole place is super clean! A perfect place to relax, reading a book and looking on Sundays River and the Sand Dunes. Wonderful! Etta and Derek are wonderful welcoming people and they gave us so many information about Addo, Africa and several other things of life. Derek went a whole day to Addo with us and he explained us so many things full of enthusiasm! You feel that he and his wife really love Addo and their country. It´s a perfect place to explore that area.
Last but not least: the breakfast was emazing; fresh fruit juices different every morning, fresh -self made bread.... We wanted to stay for hours..
We would loved to stay much longer and we give all the best wishes to Edda and Derek!

The location of DungBeetle is perfect for exploring Addo. We went into the park twice: once with a guide from a private game reserve and once with Derek form DungBeetle River Lodge. Both days were really nice. We saw lots of animals, way more then we would have seen on our own, with our rental car.

Rooms were decorated in 'African style'. Although, I would never decorate my house like this, for this place it was perfect, simple, clean and it had everything we needed.

The breakfast deck is super nice. We also had drinks here after a day in Addo. Breakfast is good: many jams, marmelades, fresh bread and eggs.

For food, Colchester has only one option, but that was okay for us. After all the fancy restaurants on our route, we were happy to eat a burger.

Etta and Derek are like a mum and dad who want you to have the best experience of the area. Derek is super social and likes to tell you as much as he can about Addo, his family and soccer. Etta is a little strict, telling what to do and what not to do, but she's also very nice and they really complement each other.

Unfortunately, 3 nights just wasn't enough to explore the area. If we'll go back to SA, we would come back.

If you want to feel as if you are really in Africa, stay at the DungBeetle. All the decor, and amenities, such as furniture, lamps, and bedspreads, exude the dark continent. We stayed in a suite that had an elephant head at each corner of the bed and a balcony overlooking the river.
A sumptious breakfast was served each morning at riverside with freshly baked breads, homemade jams, and custom orders. The dock below was handy for our boat ride down the river to the dunes, which we recommend. We were not astute enough to book the hosts for Addo Park, because we had planned to visit an elephant reserve. When Etta learned our plans, she insisted we go to our destination THROUGH Addo, and marked a map of the park so that we would not waste unnecessary time looking for the herds. If we had realized she was so very knowledgeable about the animals, and, especially, the dungbeetles, we would have skipped the reserve and gone with her. Our mistake, and our regret.
