Dungbeetle River Lodge
Ranked #2 of 9 Colchester B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 1, 2012

Dungbeetle River Lodge is in the perfect location about 5 minutes from the southern gate of Addo Elephant National Park and across the Sundays River from the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. The accommodation is definitely 4 star with a spacious, comfortable room with all the amenities you need. It was cold at night so the radiator and heat/AC unit were very welcome as was the great shower with plenty of hot water. And after a couple of weeks of hard water everywhere else we stayed it was really nice to lather up and wash your hair properly with softer water! The deck overlooking the river and the dunes on the other side is fantastic and is a lovely setting for the delicious and ample breakfast. We stayed for 3 nights and there was a different type of breakfast juice or smoothie each morning along with warm home baked bread, cereals and yoghurts. And then a hot breakfast to order was always very good with lots of choice. The deck is also a wonderful place to sit any time of the day and relax and watch a large variety of birdlife. It's also a great place to talk to your hosts, Etta and Derek, who are a lovely couple and very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the dunes and the river and about Addo Elephant National Park and it's flora and fauna. They did a great job making our last three nights of this holiday very special. We were invited to join them for warthog stew the first night but when they learned I don't eat meat they recommended the local pub called Grunters which is a short walk away and where the food is very good. As far as activities - you can do as little or as much as you want and since we had been in Mountain Zebra and Addo Elephant NPs for a week and have travelled in South Africa quite a bit we didn't take advantage of Etta and Derek's guiding expertise in Addo but know they would be excellent and teach you all sorts of interesting things about the park. We learned a lot just talking to them. We did take advantage of using the lodge canoe to go across to the dunes and that's an experience not to be missed. The dunes are magnificent. So thank you Derek and Etta and your great staff (especially Elsie) for a wonderful stay and thanks to Tomby the terrier for being so sweet! And thanks to Etta for washing the rental car! Which reminds me of another plus - you're only about 30 minutes from the airport. We would definitely return and recommend Dungbeetle to anyone.

Room Tip: If you're on a bit of a budget like we were don't worry about not getting a balcony room whi...

Upon our arrival we were greeted by Derek who gave us a warm welcome, offering us anything we wanted to drink. We got this positive impression right away, knowing the next 3 nights here were going to be great ones and they were! Derek was our guide for our first ever safari. We were so excited and even though he has been to ADDO Elephant National Park so many times, he shared in our excitement, showing so much patience as we took all of our photos. He told us stories about life in South Africa... it was like being with a long-time friend. Etta prearranged our visit to Kwantu Elephant Sanctuary and Schotia, she provided user-friendly maps to get to the locations, making it all the more enjoyable for us. The homemade breakfast bread and fruit juice Etta makes in the morning is so good! Together, Derek and Etta gave us such happy memories at their beautiful lodge.

Room Tip: We stayed in their Fish Eagle Suite. It has a beautiful balcony, facing the river with lots of sunsh...

An amazing experience which was simply too short with 1 1/2 days (2 nights). Etta and her team were the perfect hosts. Thanks once again, Etta, for the unforgettable one-day tour through Addo and the ability to be so close to dozens of elephants, buffeloes and other park inhabtants. Your knowledge of the park, its pants and animals was so enriching and precious. Last but not least, Etta's enthusiasm so genuine.

Room Tip: We had booked the African Big-5 suite which offered a private terrace over-looking the Sundays river...

We recently returned from 3 weeks holiday in South Africa which started with 3 nights at the Dung Beetle. We really loved the place and it is ideally situated for entry to Addo. Derek and Etta provided very kind hospitality and Etta managed to find lion in the park on our first game drive. Seeing the young male lion climbing the tree is something we will always remember. The accommodation and breakfast were first class and the boat trip on the Sundays River to climb the sand dunes was a great experience. Thank you once again Derek & Etta and we hope to meet again.

We 2 couples from Sweden staied at Dungbeetle for 3 nights and that was an absolutely unforgettably stay. So Dear Etta & Derek, thank you so much for for all your kindness and hospitality. We enjoyed the trip to Addo, the game drive and the trip on Sundays river, everthing was execllent from start to leaving. The breakfast with the newly baked bred, marmelads of different kind, egg and bacon and the special prickly pears served at the deck overlooking the river is to be rememberd. We will highly recommend this place.

Etta and Derick are awesome hosts and have a truly beautiful river lodge where we had breakfast served on the deck overlooking the beautiful Sunday's river. They have many many activities for the more adventurous travellers and you will be collected right from their jetty at the guest house! ;) Their tranquil 4 star luxury suites with air conditioning (a must in summer) are truly amazing!

Thank you for an awesome time on the Sunday's river!

We agree with all the previous five star reviews already posted. We had the three day package and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities especially the game drive with Derek to Addo. The trip on the Sunday's river is a must. Breakfast on the deck overlooking the river is to be remembered.
