Dungbeetle River Lodge is in the perfect location about 5 minutes from the southern gate of Addo Elephant National Park and across the Sundays River from the largest sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. The accommodation is definitely 4 star with a spacious, comfortable room with all the amenities you need. It was cold at night so the radiator and heat/AC unit were very welcome as was the great shower with plenty of hot water. And after a couple of weeks of hard water everywhere else we stayed it was really nice to lather up and wash your hair properly with softer water! The deck overlooking the river and the dunes on the other side is fantastic and is a lovely setting for the delicious and ample breakfast. We stayed for 3 nights and there was a different type of breakfast juice or smoothie each morning along with warm home baked bread, cereals and yoghurts. And then a hot breakfast to order was always very good with lots of choice. The deck is also a wonderful place to sit any time of the day and relax and watch a large variety of birdlife. It's also a great place to talk to your hosts, Etta and Derek, who are a lovely couple and very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the dunes and the river and about Addo Elephant National Park and it's flora and fauna. They did a great job making our last three nights of this holiday very special. We were invited to join them for warthog stew the first night but when they learned I don't eat meat they recommended the local pub called Grunters which is a short walk away and where the food is very good. As far as activities - you can do as little or as much as you want and since we had been in Mountain Zebra and Addo Elephant NPs for a week and have travelled in South Africa quite a bit we didn't take advantage of Etta and Derek's guiding expertise in Addo but know they would be excellent and teach you all sorts of interesting things about the park. We learned a lot just talking to them. We did take advantage of using the lodge canoe to go across to the dunes and that's an experience not to be missed. The dunes are magnificent. So thank you Derek and Etta and your great staff (especially Elsie) for a wonderful stay and thanks to Tomby the terrier for being so sweet! And thanks to Etta for washing the rental car! Which reminds me of another plus - you're only about 30 minutes from the airport. We would definitely return and recommend Dungbeetle to anyone.
