Owner description: Ghalyas Museum of Modern Art It invites visitors to explore Oman’s past, present and future aura, being welcomed not by one person, or several people, but by a whole culture. The display of modern works, in conjunction with the historic life of the 50s and 70s is intended to create a feeling that the “inner” Omani continues forever unchanging. With a permanent collection of heritage, culture, tradition and art, Ghalya's Museum of Modern Art serves as a museum and a showcase.

“Stop by when you are in the Mutrah souk area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2014

This is a series of old houses with displays of everyday items from1950s, a one room exhibit of works by modern Omani artists and a small gift shop. All quite well done. This is private museum with 1OR entrance fee.

“Unexpected”

I cannot say we were expecting what we saw at this "Modern Art" museum. My friend compared it to a dingy second hand store. We found it hilariously bad but to each their own.

“Lost's of surprise”

Ghaly's Museum of Modern Art is located in the old town of Muttrah. It comprises a group of some three or four old houses linked by paths. When you enter the Museum one is immediately struck by the eerie feeling of trespassing on someone's private space. The experience is similar to being an invisible guest moving through a fascinating home. This is unique quality. Inside one experiences - '' sees'' is not a strong enough verb - an intimate collection of personal effects. Here are an intriguing range of everyday items which the occupants must have used or indeed still use. Essentially this charming place is so much more than a museum. It's an intense vision of a life and lifestyle being lost in the raucous hubbub of modernity. If one visits Oman this unusual and arresting experience must be on the agenda.

“Must See in Muscat!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

When visiting Oman, I've always been struck by how friendly and personable the people are - how colourful and easygoing, by comparison to other Middle Eastern Society's. But equally, I had been curious as tohow Omani society had developed, particularly over the past 30/40 years, from a traditional and largely agricultural socity to a world class high end tourist destination with a host of 5 star hotels and a discerning visitor base. Ghalya's Museum of Modern Art is a real find and provides a remarkable insight into how those two worlds might have come together. The detail the insight the access and abaility to really touch and feel traditional Omani life is unique and exciting. Contrast then with the Modern Art on exhibit . . .a further extension of not just Omani life but how Middle Eastern life has changed dramatically in some ways and just very subtely in others. The range of artists on display is hugely informative and utterly absorbing. I would highly recommend a trip to this fascinating Museum and Gallery as a 'Must Do' on any visitors trip to Oman . . .and for those of you lucky enough to live there - its a must see. The location, incidentally, is superb, on the Majestic Corniche and not far from His Maj!
