Owner description: Ghalyas Museum of Modern Art It invites visitors to explore Oman’s past, present and future aura, being welcomed not by one person, or several people, but by a whole culture. The display of modern works, in conjunction with the historic life of the 50s and 70s is intended to create a feeling that the “inner” Omani continues forever unchanging. With a permanent collection of heritage, culture, tradition and art, Ghalya's Museum of Modern Art serves as a museum and a showcase.

A fascinating experience and certainly a must-see in Muscat - much here that is a real commentary of current Arab culture.

Definitely a must-see while in old Muscat. The surrounding area is gorgeous as well and you can take photos from the rooftop. The art was very nice.

Visited Ghalya's Museum on the recommendation of a friend who knows my love for everything anthropological and sociological and I must say to my amazement it was as she described and more.
I was delighted to roam around this museum which is a house built in the early sixties and the exhibits in it are organised around the daily lives of its occupants from the wedding room which its walls lined with Omani dresses and jewellery to the wedding bed which I understand has inside it a bridal mannequin dressed to display her wedding clothes and jewellery.
There was also Mussabah's room which I was told is designed to reflect the life of a character in a novel written by an Omani writer and this reminded me of the museum in Istanbul of the Turkish Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk who set up a museum based on one of his novels.
Ghalya's Museum reflects an integrated idea, well executed. The entry charge of one rial is almost nothing when you think of all the work which went in to set up this museum. Finally there is an art gallery with beautiful sculptures presently on display

Combining eclectic content with beautifully chosen pieces, Ghalya's Museum is a fantastic addition to the already impressive cultural scene in Muscat.

Impressive content from a variety of both Omani and international artists is allied with real sensitivity in selection and presentation; the result is that the visitor gets a sense that they are able to move through a selection of vignettes that offer a window into very different Oman, very different to the sterility that can be found in some museums.

As an art lover, I cannot recommend my experience highly enough; a fantastic thing to do in Oman!
