“Good value for money, practical location”
Reviewed April 6, 2012

Booked this hotel for our first night in Oman. We picked it according to previous recommendations and we were happy of the choice.
It's not an "airport" hotel (there is another Tulip Inn really next to the Muscat airport) but is rather half way between the airport and the old city center. And consider that there are no hotels in old Muscat, beside some infamous hostels.
The area is not really nice (close to the highway and nothing interesting around within walking distance), however it's definitely quiet and by car you can easily reach anywhere around in Muscat.
Staff was really friendly and helpful. We were upgraded for free to a superior room, actually a mini-apartment. All very spacious and clean.
Provides free internet wifi access, although you cannot connect at the same time with more devices (there is only one account per room). So one has to logoff if someone else needs to connect. Not really practical.
We also tried the in-room dinner service which was really good and not too expensive.
Globally slightly overpriced for its absolute value but this is a common problem to almost all hotels in Oman.

We arrived in Muscat today at 5am. I had booked another cheaper hotel and emailed asking for confirmation of early check in. I got no such email but went there anyway. Rude man on reception said he would not, could not check us in till midday. We took a taxi to 8 other hotels and finally found this gem. Nice staff, gorgeous interior in the lobby, welcomed us and even did 3 rooms at a cheaper price, ADDED BREAKFAST FREE and upgraded us because he saw we were tired! How nice? The mini suite was only 45omr per night and room is nice. Good aircon, safe, big tv but no bath. Disappointing bathroom but worth every penny. They have a good restaurant and the location is perfect for the souqs and airport, only short taxi ride away. The sound of the mosque next door is lovely
And the people hete are very friendly. Make sure you go to a beautiful beach while here. Remember to check with your hotel about early check in. .

The Tulip is a wonderful midrange hotel in Muscat. With its spacious rooms, courteous and helpful staff, the hotel offers a fine return on your investment. This is especially true when you’re planning to stay for a longer period of time or in weekends (so check for special rates). It’s located a two minutes drive from The Royal Opera House (a tourist-must) and opposite the ministerial and embassy quarter (when you’re in town for business).

My room was very small looking out to a light well, no view, no light. But the room was quiet. The receptionist who checked me in was unprofessional and almost hostile, not a very good first impression of a city and country - and I heard such good reports about the Omani people! The requested wake up call and transfer arrangements never came (despite several reassurances by this same receptionist) I and a fellow guest nearly missed our planes. It was only thanks to the reactivity of the night receptionist that we still made it to the airport. My e-mail to the management of the hotel was never answered. The only positive aspect was the food for dinner and the pleasant and kind hostess from the Philippines who served that night.

A decent hotel but a bit gaudy in reception. Check out the 1960's furniture and glittery purple cushions. Rooms are big but all the rooms for our party had a real problem with getting the shower water to drain anywhere but all over the bathroom floor. So, take a tip - remove the drain cover on entry so the water fills the shower tray, spills over and heads for the exit! Food is okay but there is better around the city. Breakfast included in price. Parking out back and in car park to side but be careful of broken glass in this area. Take taxis away from the hotel for a cheaper rate.

Very impressed with this hotel, which was really just a lucky find! We lived in Muscat some 16 years ago and visited only once since. There was no Tulip Inn last time we were there and we weren't making a special trip so we just looked for a trusted brand at a reasonable rate.

First off, follow the hotel's directions to get there. It's really quite easy. If you do get lost, go back to the Shell filling station and start again. The hotel is located in Al Khuwair, near the Zawawi Mosque, on the mountains' side of the Al Qaboos highway (that's on the right as you come in from the airport). It's about 10 minutes' drive to the malls at Qurm, and 20 minutes from Ruwi High Street (main shopping street). 10 minutes more takes you to Muttrah Souq and another 10 to Muscat itself and the Al Alam Palace. Getting back to the airport will take about 30-40 minutes. The public beach is 10 minutes on the other side of the highway (drive towards Muscat on the access road and turn right at the traffic lights). Bear in mind you will have to drive, or take a taxi, to get anywhere. Walking is best described as an "adventure", especially in the summer heat.

Next, don't let the white and purple decor in reception put you off! The rooms are much tamer than that. We were pleasantly surprised when we were upgraded from a Deluxe room to an Executive room (no guarantees that will happen every time) and we also thought the welcoming orange juice while checking in was a nice touch of Arabic hospitality.

The room itself was scrupulously clean, and was cleaned to the same high standard throughout our stay. There were two efficient split air-conditioners with remote controls so we could set things up just as we wanted. The queen-sized bed was comfortable but somewhat on the hard side.

The in-house TV served up a good range of satellite channels including French and German as well as English and Arabic channels. Don't expect a full-range entertainment package in your mother-tongue. There just aren't enough channels to serve everyone.

Note that there's no swimming pool in the hotel, but there is a gym (which we didn't use)
There's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Just ask reception for the password and log in through the usual hotel home page. Note that some web sites and services (e.g. Skype, IM) are blocked by the service provider due to national regulations. The hotel point this out themselves on their home page, for the avoidance of any doubt.

Because we'd been upgraded we had access to the "Flavours Lounge" on the 7th floor which was like a Tulip version of Sheraton's "Club Lounge". There was free coffee, tea and chilled soft drinks available as well as snacks including croissants and (quite excellent) dates and an enormous TV at one end of the room which received all the same channels as in our room. We ordered a room service meal to be delivered to the Lounge, which duly arrived. There was some initial confusion in the kitchen as they weren't sure if they were allowed to deliver to the Lounge but the Duty Manager quickly sorted that out. The meal was excellent, and good value.

We also had breakfast in the Al Luban Restaurant on the ground floor. We were quite late for breakfast but the staff made no complaint and checked with us, as we were munching through our meal, before they started clearing.

Check-out was simple and quick. No surprises on the bill.

Things to improve - well, the concierge seemed slightly taken aback when we asked him for a taxi. In fact there were two sitting outside so he was able to recover quickly! And the Flavours Lounge could use some newspapers to provide another reason for going there. We seemed to be the only ones who spent any time there.

In summary - good hotel, very well priced, would visit again and recommend to others.

Room Tip: See if you can get an upgrade. All views are "city".

The room at the Tulip Inn was kindly provided by the organizers of the conference I attended in Muscat. I have only good words to say about the hotel - it is absolutely spotless. In terms of location, it is midway between the Airport and the Muttrah Corniche - one can access the latter with the taxi-bus for 300 baisa or so.
