I just wanted to add my thumbs up to all the excellent reviews Dolaucothi Gold Mines already has.

In answer to the single 'terrible' review given, as pointed out during our tour, there is real gold there... all you have to do is mine out around 10 tons of rock, process it and perhaps, if you're lucky, you'll find up to an ounce of gold - just like the hard workers who have risked their lives over the hundreds of years of mining that have taken place at this historic site.

Go, enjoy the experience like many others!

We took the Victorian mine tour Sandra, she said she had been there 18 years and she clearly loved her job. Very enthusiastic, interesting and funny tour.

Worth every penny.

We went because we really wanted to go down the mine. When we arrived it seemed that we needed to do the Victorian Tour, which included about 30 mins down the mine. We had to wait about 1.5 hours, but this was no hardship as the kids loved panning for gold and poking about the, quite small, site. Once kitted up in helmet and lamp (tip - make sure you have proper shoes on!) we had a talk by a very knowledgeable and interesting guide. He then led us up the hill to the mine entrance. Lights on, and in we went. Very good! For those fit enough the exit was through the old Roman workings. A quite steep and narrow climb up wooden and very uneven steps. Described as the "Indiana Jones" exit by the guide. A great experience if you are not claustrophobic...

Had a lovely day out at Dolaucothi, the staff were very knowlegable and friendly, the Victorian cave visit was good fun, but hard work if you've got a toddler.
The panning for gold was great fun, although quite artificial, and loaded with fools gold for fun, but didn't matter at all.

If you love history and gold, you'll enjoy yourself

We had a very enjoyable visit to this gold mine in July, the staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and very passionate and interested in their tours down the mines! We especially loved the quick climb at the end, Indiana jones style out of the mine for a real experience! Gold panning was also a great experience for the kids! The staff were also very accommodating when we left a handbag in the locker, and drove off 2hours away! They took the trouble to post it back home while we continued on our tour of Wales! Saving us hassle having to forfeit a half day of our holidays to travel back up from Swansea! Well done and thanks to Steve and his superb team!
