As promised last year we've returned to the wonderful Sugarapple Inn At Bequia's Friendship Bay. It's testament in itself that we've returned within a year, almost to the day. Here I sit in a light and airy studio apartment overlooking the bay, the caribbean sparkles and the islets of Batowia and Baliceau loom out to sea. Mustique, which we'll sail over to on Friday, will soon twinkle on the horizon when the sun sets. Fetching up Bequia and S'apple was like returning home, to a home in the sun, with lovely warm hugs of welcome from Cilla and Ronelle, both of whom do everything to make your stay comfortable. Our equally well-travelled friends have just flown over to join us for the final three weeks of our trip through the Grenadines and they too are pleased and impressed with Sugarapple, it's been a wonderful find and a place we'll return to, wherever elsewhere we might travel, during the year. And in a couple of hours time we're off to eat at Fernandos - much vaunted and recommended. Let's see how they do. Watch this space. But there's no doubting Sugarapple - a sweet treat in the Caribbean.

We would not disagree with a single positive thing offered by the other reviewers here, but we would offer a couple of cautions. First, if you are annoyed by barking dogs, prepare to be annoyed. This is a Caribbean island and there are lots of families with dogs and their dogs sometimes bark. They are near the hotel. Second, if you have any mobility problems, be aware that the inn is on a steep hillside and there are multiple steps to get anywhere on, off, or within the property. For instance, there were 47 steps, up and down, between our room and the pool. Third, two sides of the inn front onto streets that have some traffic noise. If this is the sort of thing that wears on you, you should go elsewhere.

But those caveats offered, we found all the positives others noted to be absolutely accurate. The rooms are neatly maintained, the breakfasts filling, the breezes endless, and the people extremely pleasant. We are trying someplace else on the island next year, but that is only because we like to "shop around." The three items above aside, the Sugarapple is a great place to stay, with superior access to the finest beach on the island!

Room Tip: #6 was our favorite...

Cilla and the team at Sugar Apple are the best!!! We have stayed there for the past 6 years and will be back again and again. We love the Friendship side of Bequia as there is always a sea breeze. We hike and walk the island so we know all the secret/best places to hang out but the Sugar apple always is home for us. Bequia is not for everyone, no all-inclusives, no 5 star dining but absolutely the nicest people you will ever meet.

Cila - manager is very resourceful and helpful. Bequia is a hidden treasure in the Caribbean. Some mosquitoes though :-). The island is very affordable. This hotel is situated at the middle of it. Everything is accessible with small vans or taxis.

We stayed at the Sugarapple Inn for 12 days back in January 2013. Cilla and the gang made our stay very nice. The place is very clean and well kept. The view is nice of Friendship Bay but try to get the rooms on top for a better view. They have a nice place to BBQ in the evening. They provided a local cell phone already programmed with numbers of places on the island. We had beach chairs to bring to the Friendship Bay beach which is not more than a 5 minutes walk. The room was very bright. The only thing I would suggest is to bring bug repellent because when the winds die down, the mosquitoes get out. The a/c is great but it is always better to get a nice breeze from outside. They picked us up at the port when we arrived and Franklin was there and brought us to the bank. Which we waited over one hour but he stayed with us. Cilla even organized an island tour in St-Vincent for us since we had to wait over 5 hours before our flight back to Ste-Lucia. We will be back at the Sugarapple Inn. Last thing, you might not be close to town but there is plenty of taxis and local buses that passes by all the time so you hardly ever wait.

Room Tip: Choose room 1 or 6
