“Chalet Topaz in La Tania was superb in every way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2014

My family of 8 adults and 8 grandchildren spent Christmas week at the Chalet Topaz in La Tania. The entire experience was memorable, so memorable in fact that we are already thinking about a return trip, all the way from Adelaide, Australia no less. The Chalet is amazing, well located near the lifts, ski hire shop and pistes. Every one of the 8 bedrooms has its own bathroom and the rooms and beds are very comfortable. The girls who looked after and cooked for us were amazing. Cherry and Christina cooked superb 3 course dinners every night and there are no complaints whatsoever from us about any meal sizes as most nights we all struggled to finish. Christmas dinner was a special delight with Roast Turkey, Roast Potatoes and a even a Plum Pudding to high-light the special occasion. Afternoon tea always brought forth some specially cooked treats by Cherry. Breakfast was typical continental and more than adequate. Because we love French baguettes, we often bought those from the local bakery to supplement out-of-mealtime munching! The cozy fire, lounge, large dining table were all perfect for us. The hot tub was a special treat for the adults and the children every night. We highly recommend Chalet Topaz at La Tania to anyone who wants to stay and ski there. Especially families. The village is also very family friendly yet there is easy access to the entire Three Valleys area for the more experienced skiers. We also thought that the value was excellent at just $A1,000/head for a high season week including all food plus drinks at dinner.

I was the group leader in terms of main contact for Ski power for my group. We visited the Chalet in the first week of Jan .

Before the Trip:
+ Communication with the staff of Ski Power had been good.
+ Helped with transfers in terms of who to use and put me in touch with the Chalet hosts 2 weeks before the trip in order to organise a menu as we were all vegetarians.

+ On the whole the manager at ski power in the UK was, helpful during the process of booking etc and I can have no faults with that, it is more so afterwards that both parties have not seen eye to eye over a couple of concerns.

- Only issue with the trip before leaving was the issue of a ski boot refund. Understandably we know that we had been explained no refunds. However as one of my party had received Ski boots for xmas he obviously did not know that he was getting them, and therefore I was rather disappointed in Ski power for not refunding us or trying to obtain a refund from the rental shop. However this seems to be an issue with Ski Higher (the ski rental shop which ski power go though). We are due a refund from one of these parties as we paid for 17 boots and only used 16. This issue is still ongoing but as I cannot seem to get a number for the Ski Higher Owner it doesn't seem the boot refund will be coming. We tried to ensure that this did not ruin our holiday.

THE TRIP ITSELF:
When we arrived the chalet hosts were kind enough to take our luggage and show us to to ski hire shop where we got fitted and as we were an early check-in we got this part of the day completed first as the previous chalet occupiers had not as yet left the chalet, which was fine as we had been pre-warned about that.

The Snow was good, skiing was good, our ski school we used was very good. Our ski passes had been provided for us once we got to the chalet and we were shown our rooms and given a "house Rules" Speech by both the hosts which was great to be provided with some information etc.

CHALET HOSTS: Cherry and Christina

The Chalet Hosts Cherry and Christina were the best thing to be supplied by Ski power, so to say. As I had been in touch with cherry over the week before we left to decide on a menu it was great to meet her in person. They catered for us really well. Looking after all our needs as we were Vegetarian. They provided good portions as after the first night they realised we needed bigger portions and from there on they provided brilliant larger portions. The afternoon Cake made by christina each day was fantastic, and eggless catering for all 17 of us.

They both advised on where we could go on a night out and booked our midweek meal for us in La Tiga. They had tried to help us with the issues we had with our boot refund, however no joy here.

The food which was cooked was brilliant and we all look forward to getting hold of some of their recipes. Chalet Service was great from them, and they did go out of their way if we had any issues. We left them a fairly large tip which acknowledges that we were happy with their service for sure :)

THE CHALET:

The chalet is decent but nothing spectacular. There are smaller beds than we expected but this wasn't a major issue. The boot room was perfect for storage and keeping our ski gear, but a little squashed when more than 3/4 people tried putting on their Boots.

The Hot tub was a great Addition and would recommend use after a long day of skiing!. There is sufficient space, just about, in the lounge but maybe not for all 16/17 at once, in terms of seating etc. Its not a luxury chalet, but is placed close to the slopes, and not ski in ski out. There is a 5 minute walk to the lift which takes to down to the slopes. There is a tough ski route which could get you back the the chalet directly, but this is definitely more for your advanced skiers!

Ski Higher - Rental Shop

The staff here were not the best prepared apparently when we got there. They had not got an idea of what was chosen by which person of the Ski Power website. Leaving aside a few conversations which took place between the staff and our group, we were satisfied with their eventual service and the fact that they allowed us to change our ski's when we wanted to if they weren't right for us was a bonus.

I had no real issue with the staff, apart from one member who doesn't seem to be working there anymore. We were about to get our boot refund from them until they said we had to obtain it from Ski power. Now neither party seems willing to help us get this refund. Its the principle of paying for something and not using it that we are most disappointed with, not the money aspect as such. When booking your trip through ski Power, yes you do have to go through the site to get your discount which they say is passed on the the consumer, which is fine. However it left us in a sticky situation when trying to get a refund. I think Next time I would look further into where I may be able to hire my own equipment when I got there, as then it leaves only the ski rental place to blame if indeed I require a refund.

All in all the rental staff seemed fine when handling our ski rental gear, and were fine with service, it is only afterwards that we have found out about why they were not prepared for our arrival and had no list as to who had hired what. Again this is an issue between ski power and ski higher. We no longer want to be involved. IT is not our responsibility to chase refund payments, both companies should discuss the matter and sort it out for the future, so that any future guests don't have the same issue.. We have now left the matter behind.

In Summary:
Chalet was decent, Chalet Staff were perfect. Ski Power were fine before the trip I have to say, but we have had a few issues since the trip (all around the refund issue). The Ski Higher (ski rental shop) staff were mostly friendly and helpful, however they seem to have fed us a few lies with regards to which party owes a refund. We didn't let these issues ruin our holiday.

We look forward to visiting La Tania again soon, however may have to choose another chalet company and another ski rental place as there were a few causes for concern on the trip. Apart from the few issues above, it was a great holiday!

Bad points:
TINY portions sizes. We had to spend money on buying a full dinner out of the chalet before eating dinner in the chalet to avoid hunger pains, and we are normal sized people. Got the evil eye when asking for more at dinner. No bread to fill up on.
Very basic food. For example.A starter one day was 4 slices of apple with a pea sized bit of blue cheese on each slice.
Expect every meal to be late. At least an hour late. Hosts too busy with hangovers to get up on time in morning and even told us they " dont do alot of work".
Breakfast is shoddy and basic. Croissants were a "treat" so the breakfast only consists of coca pops, nut crunch, and erm..... Well that's it! Sometimes you got toast, sometimes you got some processed ham I wouldn't give my dog and some cheese that the group the week before had left behind. I know his because they told me! They did boil some eggs when bought ourselves.
Afternoon is tea is some cheap bought biscuits or dry supermarket cake. Or the one nice thing....homemaker rice crispy cakes.
Chalet walls are made of paper. You can hear EVERYTHING. Do not stay here unless everyone goes to bed at the same time.
Chalet dining area isn't cleaned before you get back from skiing, they leave that until right before dinner. Washing up is left all day so the girls can go skiing.

Good points:
Although pretty useless, the chalet girls were friendly.
The chalet bedrooms were cleaned regularly.
The chalet itself is in a good spot and close to ski lift.
Enough boot warmers for everyone.

In summary, this isn't a cheap option so it shouldn't be this bad. You will end up paying for meals out anyway so the "catering" isn't worth the extra. Stay in self catered or a different chalet where they may actually care about what they do.

Having just left Chalet Topaz and started my first week back the holiday blues are beginning.

Our group was 16 people (male and female) and we stayed in Chalet Topaz for the week.

Cherry and Sam were great hosts, really looking after us from the first. The majority of us arrived late due to a delayed flight and our evening meals were set out for us upon our arrival (circa 11pm), alongside a glass of wine or two, which really helped us to relax after the journey. This type of act of goodwill continued throughout the week and they were both warm, friendly and fun for the duration of the trip.

Sam showed us how to get to the ski hire shop in the morning as our late arrival meant we couldn't have it ready the night before.

Breakfast included cereals, bread, ham, cheese, jams, crossoints and juices, tea and coffee which was perfectly sufficient but our hosts offered to cook a fry up for any of the hungrier guests if they bought the stuff. Breakfast was ready as early as required so we could always make the first lift.

In fact Cherry and Sam even took one of our less able snow boarders out on the slopes to help her gain her confidence.

Afternoon tea and cakes were also provided after skiing.

The meals were delicious every night and there was a option provdided before we got out there to select which dishes we would prefer. There were starters and deserts each day. Even thought we did not have any special dietry requirements one of the girls did not want to eat prawns or fish when she arrived. She politely asked Cherry if that would be possible and she seemed more than happy to accomodate her needs. One of the group had her Birthday on the last evening and Cherry and Sam put in a lot of effort to get balloons, party hats and streamers etc ready for the meal.

The wine provided alongside went down very well with everyone.

The chalet is great and was kept very clean, despite our efforts to prevent that.

The outdoor hot tub is a delight after a tiring day on the slopes I would recommend one of these for a sk holiday for sure. A great way to get rid of the those achy ski legs.

The location is great with a 10 second walk to the piste and close to the Gondola and the main area of La Tania.

La Tania being small has a supermarket, a bank machine, some bars and restaurants, a ski hire shop and gift shops. The nightlife is really what you make of it here and our group had a few fun adventures during the week. If you don't fancy the nightlife then you will be just fine in Chalet Topaz as the noise won't carry to the chalet. However if you do, it is only a short walk and with a group of 16 there was plenty of fun to be had.

The snow was sensational in late January when we arrived, it snowed in the evening on a couple of nights but was sunny in the day and we had two incredible powder days.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable trip that was made really special by the group and the hosts Cherry and Sam.

This Chalet is currently being used by Ski Power and the team working this Season 11/12 seem to want to blame their managers for everything (or is it because they are bonused on both cost control and satisfaction) and want to defer responsibility - ideal little chalet for 16 (pity dining room table didn't comfortably fit that many) - great heated boot warmers in the equipment room (although if more than four people wanted to get ready there was a space issue) - Hot tub was a great addition and will now go on my list of requirements for a Chalet holiday moving forward - they go for the 'luxury' market but miss it in many ways! - I would return here

Room Tip: couples get doubles and bath - twins get a shower!

Got back last weekend from an excellent week care of Ski Power and Chalet Topaz.

We were a group of 11 girls and had sole occupancy. Meg and James were just the best - with the competent support of Debs, the resort manager. They tended to our every need and nothing was too much bother. The food was delicious and plentiful and the cheese board amazing. Great location too.

Our only gripe was that Ski Power (not Meg and James) chose this season to exclude a 'hot option' at breakfast and replace it with a Full English offering as an extra. We felt this was big mistake, and bumping into other Ski Power guests they did too. We didn't want 'full English' just one 'hot option'.. a boiled or poached egg or even a bowl of porridge would suffice. Also, offering a full continental breakfast with slices of cheese and ham costs a hell of a lot more than an egg!!! It also made some of group feel that Ski Power were just trying to make an extra buck! I really really do hope they reconsider this for next year.

Pip back at UK HQ bent over backwards to accomodate our group and did everything she could do help facilitate a smooth and successful trip.

The ski hosting was also a wonderful - our group really appreciated both hosts who were very sensitive to the level of skiers they took out.

The chalet itself was ideal for our group. The sitting area was cosy around the fire, and the hot tub was an absolute necessity at the end of the day :).

NB Ski Power HQ - you need to buy a metal shovel to remove the ice from the steps up to the chalet.. the plastic ones just don't cut it!
