So, I couldn't resist the lure of another holiday to Antigua, & having had such a great time last time felt I had to return to Reefview... We stayed in the very romantic cottage apartment, which was built by Nick's own hands, which was lovely. The sea breeze kept the apartment cool at night, & we were woken up to a beautiful view over the reef in the mornings. We even manger to cook up a couple of feasts from the so well designed galley kitchen, & the outdoor shower...well...brilliant!!

Aside from that, we certainly weren't disappointed by the island's surprises...and a new fish to stalk...Tarpon. I'd never fly fished before, but Nick was a great teacher (with fortunately a lot of much needed patience!). It meant a few early morning starts, but once I'd 'mastered' the art of the rod, which was almost straight away under nick's guidance, I experienced a side of Antigua that I'd never seen before. I'm never normally a pre-sunrise person, but the tranquility of the waters, stalking the rising fish was awesome...and then to finally hook one, play it, and land it was fantastic. And then another, and another... I even managed to persuade Nick to go for a sunset session, before a beer on the beach-another world that in still dreaming of!

Apart from that, we had a lovely day out in Little Mermaid again, did some amazing snorkelling off Cades Reef, seeing loads of beautifully coloured fish, several turtles, nurse sharks and even an eagle ray. I don't know if Nick has some way of communicating with the sealife, but they certainly seemed to turn up as asked for! We took their kayaks out one day down to the empty beaches at Curtain Bluff and Carlisle Bay-it was hard work, but well worth the trip and yet another way to see Antigua (although not quite the quantity of wildlife nick managed to conjure up).

We had a few days at the beaches which were stunning-the beauty of not staying in a resort was the freedom to come and go wherever we wanted. In fact the one disappointing trip to the beach was at the beach at Jolly Harbour. All we wanted was a quiet drink at Castaways, and the staff were great, but we were persistently harassed by people touting boat trips & selling 'charity' CDs! It was straight back to the tranquility and seclusion of Reefview for us! However one place not to miss, is a trip to Chappy's for lunch/dinner at Erling's Harbour-lovely local food, at local prices, in a local surrounding... and only a 5 minute stroll from Reefview.

So all in all, another awesome holiday at the hands of the second-to-none hospitality of Nick and Karoll (my memories of the welcome fish BBQ with obligatory rum punch are making me hungry right now!!). It may have been 'Hurricane season', but we had amazing weather, with no hint of trouble. It's a risk to take going then apparently, but the payback is absolutely no one else around, and deserted, beautiful beaches & seas. If you're thinking of doing it, go for it, and see a different side to the all inclusive resorts, and seek out the gems the Reefview posse has to offer-if you don't tap them for the invaluable local knowledge they have, you WILL miss out!!

Enjoy!!!

Room Tip: They're all great, all have their own character.

We have just returned from a fantastic 2 week stay with Nick and Karroll in their sea view apartment. We did not want to stay in a built up resort as we wanted to be able to experience the "real Antigua" and you could not have asked for more from this couple who were always there to offer advice and knowledge about the local area.

You must, must, must book the snorkelling trip with them as we saw some of the most amazing sea life from conger eels, stingray, starfish, barracuda and to top it off we got to swim with the turtles which was an unbelievable experience! For the first week we travelled everywhere by bus which was great fun and the second week we hired a 4x4 which is definitely a must if you want to see some of the remote beaches. Also you have to visit Chappies bar and mix with the regulars and try some of the local dishes washed down with a few Wadadli's (local beer).

If you are looking for a home from home in the Caribbean and want glorious beaches, fantastic accommodation, not forgetting Karolls legendary rum punch and local information at your fingertips (whilst watching the pennies) then this is the place to stay without a doubt!!

We just returned from a lovely week at Reefview Apartments, run by expats Karroll and Nick. We stayed in the Beach Cottage, which was perfect for us. Designed and built by Nick, the Cottage is comfortable, very well equipped (e.g. with a good fan in the bedroom and plenty of equipment in the kitchen), and decked out in lovely shells and art work. We loved the outdoor shower (concealed from view by others!), ship-like design and all the windows, which allowed the cool breeze to come through. The little yard is full of flowers and plants, and a BBQ and table for al fresco dining. We loved the 'Reefview Zoo' – two adorable dogs, two cats and a sweet (blind) parrot. At night all you can hear is tree frogs, insects and the sea.

The location probably wouldn't be for everyone, but is ideal for anyone wanting a really relaxing getaway, like us. Nothing touristy around – just a little village (Urlings) where you can go down to buy delicious bread from the bakery or check out the tiny fishing marina. Plenty of donkeys, goats and chickens hanging around. The local beach is lovely – a kind of nature beach with lots of mangroves, frequented only by the occasional local having a dip or fishing. White sand and clear blue waters it is not – but there's plenty of that elsewhere on the island, including a few minutes drive away at Darkwood Beach or Curtain Bluff. For most of the week we enjoyed getting around on the local buses, which are good for seeing people going about their daily business, pretty frequent and much cheaper than taxis – but a bit erratic at night. We hired a car for a couple of days, which did make things easier (it was especially good to have a 4-wheel drive for getting to the beautiful, unspoiled Rendezvous Bay). We felt entirely safe both in the village and travelling everywhere we went around the island.

We went for the welcome BBQ (USD 30 per head), served by Karroll and Nick on their gorgeous porch. This was great - both for the yummy food and for getting to know Karroll and Nick and hearing their recommendations for the island. Karroll was really helpful in arranging extra things for us like car hire and a day trip to Barbuda. Things are generally quite expensive in Antigua (as most of the Caribbean) so you do need to be clear on what your paying – and whether it's in Eastern Caribbean or US Dollars – particularly as many places (including Reefview) are cash only.

Karroll also gave us a peak at the other two apartments that they have at Reefview. Both were really nice – bigger and more modern, with A/C, and nice artwork and furniture inside. But for sheer charm and cosiness we were glad we had picked the adorable Beach Cottage. We were really sad to leave at the end of the week – Antigua is fantastic but our great accommodation and location were also major reasons why we enjoyed our holiday so much.

While on our Honeymoon, my wife and I met Nick for some tarpon action on the fly. It was an amazing time and I would highly recommend him as a guide. He is very knowledgable of the different flats and lagoons, and if anyone is in Antigua and wants to fly fish, he is your man. The locals certainly won't be of any help.

I found Reefview aka Karoll and Nick's through tripadvisor, based on the fact they were rate number 1 for budget travelers. Over the past 5 months I emailed back and forth with Karoll about all the details. She was always there to answer any questions needed. They do no accept credit cards so all the payments had to be sent via wire transfer, which I was wary of first, but it all worked out in the end.
Upon arriving to Antigua, we were picked up at the airport promptly by Karoll, we drove through the rainforest and had the chance to stop at local fruit and veggie stands being it was sunday and most markets were closed. When we arrived to the village where reefview was Karoll drove us a round the village, to check everything out. I will say that this apt close to the cades bay reef really is among the village of antigians, you're not going to a resort. For my boyfriend and I this is what we wanted, to see and experience Caribbean life...so dont be surprised. The apartment itself as gorgeous well kept an clean....we also went on a beach walk where Karoll showed us all the sea treasures along the way, in the Cades bay beach. Again this isnt you white sand beach but it is truly the "nursery of life" with conch, shells, star fish, and eels too. It is nice to walk around and even go snorkeling but sometimes hard to to walk out to depending on the tide. Nick gives a great orientation about all the beautiful beaches and restaurants around the area. We saw outrageous beaches 5 minutes away via the local bus which was great and cheap.Make sure to check out Turners and Darkwood gorgeous white sand beaches and easily accessible snorkeling. We had a great dinner with them the first night with fresh fish and clean cooking ( do the welcome BBq). We opted to rent a car the last couple nights there and it was easily organized by Karoll. She organized reservations for us and was very knowledgeable about what and where to go.Nick was also very sweet and gave lots of great help too. It was truly a great experience vs. staying at a hotel or resort because we got to check out all different parts of the island and felt like we truly had a home away from home.I also suggest to a snorkel excursion with them the snorkeling is great and the personalize it, they also took us to a spot with sand dollars, and starrfish which was awesome. Do check out Chappy's a great authentic CAribbean restaurant
These were the issues we had though, the bugs ( mosquitos) were OUT OF CONTROL!!!!For the 1st few nights I was being eaten to death, although due to the recent rain this is to be expected...maybe an orientation on how the protect your apartment would have been good...make sure you use the mosquito coils and spray with bug spray and dusk and the rest of the night especially before bed. Also everything is highly taxed in Antigua and Karoll makes sure you understand this, which sometimes was awkward. It also there house too, so sometimes it is awkward to feel like your bothering them ( for questions about the area ) but most of the time they were very approachable. Overall it was good experience, because we wanted a more independent and authentic vacation.

We had a fabulous 10 days at Reefview staying in the Penthouse. Karoll & Nick were excellent hosts providing a wealth of information & advice about the island. The apartment had everything you might need & was a home from home.

We loved the location which gave a real chilled out island vibe. Breakfast on the veranda each morning watching the boats on the horizon & humming birds in the garden was perfect!

We would highly recommend the snorkel trip where we saw so many fish, sting ray, reef sharks, turtles!

Would definitely recommend hiring a car for some of your stay so that you can explore some of the perfect, near deserted beaches!!

All in all a magical stay in a fantastic place!!

Kudos to Karoll and Nick for making our holiday so special. The penthouse is everything one could ask for it has wonderful views from every window. Rent a car and the adventure begins. Driving on the left side of the road is like playing a video game. Watch out for chickens and goats they have the right of way. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are seemingly yours alone. We give ReefView four stars! Thank you Nick and Josh for the big fish and the unexpected whale sighting. That was epic! Reserve our penthouse for the same time next year.
