My partner and I hired two bikes (the tandem was broken) to pootle around the island whilst waiting for the ferry back to the mainland. The bikes were in poor condition; the drivetrain of one was completely worn out and the cranks rubbed against the much-repaired chain case. The other was better but didn't change gear well. We carried on, gears crunching and slipping until the chain came off one bike and wedged between the bottom bracket and the chainring. We rang the shop but had to leave a message - the mobile signal on Scilly is patchy. I could scoot the jammed bike along so we decided to head back to the shop. When we got back, the owner was offhand and unhelpful, we were at fault because we hadn't brought the bike back straight away and, as no-one had complained about it before, how could he possibly know there was anything wrong with it? We were offered a replacement bike but decided to cut our losses and go for lunch instead.
There were plenty of bikes in the shop, so why we were sent off on a couple of duff ones I can't imagine. The service we received was poor and it really stands out on Scilly. The shop also does not accept card payment, it's cash or cheque only.
