“Great wedding venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

We stayed here for for a wedding. The function room opens out onto a terrace and garden that is just magical. The room its self is not ideal for a wedding meal as its long and narrow but used in combination with the garden it made this one of the nicest weddings we have been too.

The hotel is privately owned and managed. The bedroom was quirky and split over two floors with an upper floor "loft" bedroom. The bed itself was about 7 ft wide - very comfortable. It looked like the owner had updated it in parts so it had a mix of eclectic design styles. The room was £150/night - very expensive for the standard provided - unless you factor in the garden.

Room Tip: There are rooms in the main building above the public rooms that might be noisy. We stayed in a win...

[As mentioned in the title I can only make a judgement and review this hotel in regards to the Afternoon Tea, as I did not stay in any of the rooms or really explore much of the hotel itself.]

On arrival we were excited to see such a beautiful grand building in such a beautiful location and it became very clear on later exploring the gardens just why so many people get married here. It is certainly picturesque.

We were greeted in the bar area and directed through to the place where Afternoon tea was taking place. The room was beautiful and well set out so we were not cramped in with all the other people.

The young girl serving us was incredibly prompt and always checking that we had everything we needed. We were first asked if we wanted a cold drink or whether we just wanted to have tea. We opted for tea which could be refilled as often as we liked and we were constantly asked if we had enough which was lovely. Once the tea had been served the food was brought to the table. It was very nicely organised and looked lovely.

This was our first ever 'afternoon tea' so we were not really aware of what to expect although I had been told by a friend that sometimes they will ask you if you have any preferences in regards to sandwiches, which would have been a bonus because we didn't here. The sandwiches were salmon, egg and ham (unfortunately I am not a fan of any of these) although my mum and sister said they were very good.

The cake choice wasn't thrilling either, they were incredibly small pieces which is also different from what friends had told me about other places. The scones were incredibly nice though.

I do not feel that the afternoon tea here was anywhere near the price that was charged for it, and to be honest we left a little disappointed. The location and the hotel are beautiful and we also walked around the gardens which I also thought were beautiful. The service from the young girl was second to none, but there was also an older man serving who was not polite at all. We asked to take home the cakes and sandwiches that we had left (we had paid for it after all!) yet he did not seem happy with this at all and looked annoyed that we had asked.

Overall, the hotel is lovely, most of the staff were incredibly polite and friendly but I would not go back for the afternoon tea.

we were thrilled when we arrived at this hotel to discover we had an excellent room with an extremely large king size bed and a whirlpool bath. all that changed when we went down stairs to the bar, where we found the bar staff very unfriendly and rude.the breakfast was our biggest dissapointment,we had to ask twice for tea and coffee and also for toast and once again the staff were rude and unfriendly

Returned having experience the finest lunch I have ever had, no wonder they were busy, the finest of food and not expensive, clearly the word has got round. Extremely pleasant customers who know a thing or two and keep returning. As we were leaving, they had started to serve afternoon tea, what a feast that was, we may sample that in the future.

Janet and her team certainly know what they are doing, give it a try, and the gardens, perfect.

Will we return, you bet we will.

We got Married here some 6 years ago and decided to stay again to celebrate. Such a lovely unique hotel with real charm and character. All the staff are excellent and very knowledgable and it was nice to see Janet the owner so hands on taking our order for dinner. Food was excellent and the gardens are stunning. The night porter was superb and so very friendly. The perfect hotel if you want to get away from it all....we'll be back soon!

I booked this hotel for my parents for their wedding anniversary. I called on 2 occasions one to pay in advance and another to check the check in and check out times, the staff were very pleasant and happy to help. My parents stayed for 1 night and they had a brilliant nights stay. They were upgraded to a suite and said they have never seen a bed as big as the one in their room!! They said the gardens were beautiful and breakfast in the morning was fantastic. The hotel is in a great quiet location and good for a chill out. The hotel does afternoon tea and I believe my parents will be taking my nan there for this. Overall it sounds like they had a great time and I would not hesitate booking this for my husband and I!
