“Great spa staff, disappointed with the hotel”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

We had booked on a spa day on a last minute deal. We were met and offered drinks immediately on our arrival. The leisure part of the hotel was very clean and tidy. The spa staff were very friendly and helpful. As I have a medical condition and didn't have time for me to get a letter from my GP saying I could have certain treatments the spa staff put together a package for me. The changing rooms were a bit separate from the spa rooms and to access the toilets you had to leave the maim part of the spa where the relaxation room and treatment rooms were and walk back across the reception area and into the changing rooms for the swimming and fitness suite. Also the manicure area was out by the bar and the restaurant and I felt a bit conspicuous sitting out there in my dressing gown with people coming in for lunch. I would have preferred for all the spa area to be enclosed. However I was told that the spa was due for a refurb in the near future so hopefully theses issues may be addressed.
After our welcome drinks we were asked to choose what time we wanted our lunch which we did. We made use of the facilities and were back in the restaurant for the time we said. Unfortunately the lunch didn't arrive for 25 minutes despite it being ordered from the hotel. Consequently we were not able to have out sweet with our lunch as we had treatment sessions booked in. We were advised that they would have it ready for after our treatments. However the food still hadn't been sent over at the end of the treatments and a member of the spa staff did her best to sort it out especially when the kitchen then advised they didn't have what we had ordered off a very restricted menu. When the sweets did arrive we felt they were very small for the price charged.
The spa staff and the treatment rooms were lovely. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The relaxation room was nice and the couches so comfortable. I felt that there should have been a cold water machine or at least jugs of water on the side as again to get a drink you had to go back into the main reception area in your dressing gowns.
My only other bug bear is that yes there was safety notices about the length of time to stay in the sauna and steam room but not to take watches into these rooms but there was no clock or timer either in the rooms or that could be seen from the the sauna or steam room.
Lovely spa staff, lovely treatments, shame about the food.

This hotel is a good 20 - 30 mins from Chester. Perfect if you want a quiet getaway, and fairly convenient if you need somewhere not far from the motorway or airport. Not so good if you are planning a sight seeing break around Chester itself.

The hotel is set in grounds - well cared for open woodland and lawns (rather than spectacular borders) - and very pleasant to sit outside if the weather is good. The building itself is not an architectural gem - rather a functional two storey long, thin design, with spar and conference rooms at one end, restaurant towards the middle, and rooms on the other side. Other reviewers talk about a long walk from some rooms to reception - I agree - and the corridor (especially near reception) would benefit from some TLC.

Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Food is standard hotel fare. Breakfasts are cooked to order, and therefore a great way to start the day.

Rooms are spacious, with very comfortable beds, if a little tired. All very clean and tidy, with all you would expect in a room - but little in the way of extras. No heating in the room when I arrived (a late check in), no bedside radio or clock, the lighting (lamps) a little dim for my taste (especially if you plan to work). Internet supplied by BT (free in the lounges, chargeable in the rooms (and not cheap either). No water in the room (but an offer to bring fresh milk for teas and coffees).

A good night's sleep and excellent staff gives this hotel a good rating.

Booked spa day as a mothers day gift for my mum. When booking over phone was told we would get free robes and slippers upon arrival however when we arrived they asked for £10 each for these. We were left to wait in reception for 20 minutes before being shown around the facilities. We went into the pool and the scenery was lovely from the pool however the green mould around the windows and doors was not. We went into the relaxation room to wait to be called for our treatments. We wernt told the treatments were running behind and wernt even offered any water while we waited so when it had been over 15 minutes after the time of our appointments we went to ask someone for help. A manager named Caroline came over to speak to us. We explained how we wernt happy with how we had been treated so far and unfortunately the managers attitude was an absolute disgrace. Apparanty we should of known where to get the water from but we hadnt even been shown so how would we know. She said it was only a voucher we had come in on and insinuated we shouldnt expect much which extremely upset me as if my money wasnt good enough and we didnt deserve good customer service. We decided to cancel the treatments and went straight for the lunch that had been pre paid for which was based near the reception area. They even managed to get the order wrong when they sent over two ham sandwhiches instead of the blue cheese salads we ordered. Seriously guys it was written down. How hard can it be. I could forgive all of the mix ups that had happened through the day if it wasnt for the unbelievable attitude of the so called leisure club manager Caroline. All in all the spa lost out on over a £100 as this is what we would of paid if we had stayed to have the treatments and refeshments so their loss not ours. We will never ever try this place again. Not even if it was free.

Have meant to review this hotel for ages but only just got round to it - always on the lookout for MacDonald hotel deals and this one has not disappointed on two visits. The rooms vary in quality and size and I like those with a view of the lovely garden.
The pool is fab and the food elegant and well presented, if a little sparse on portion size. Wine is expensive but you get what you pay for at exactly the right temperature. On my last visit, which was a special occasion, I had a couple of beauty treatments which were lovely but pricey. Avoid purchasing Decleor products here because they are readily available cheaper on the "net". My mother and I took our dog and this was not a problem . The staff were competent and obliging but in the restaurant could have been a little friendlier.

Great place to stay; there are one or two quirks which are worth bearing in mind however. The room heating is electrical, and they don't put it on before you arrive. A call to the hotel a couple of hours before you get there would sort this out I am sure. Wi-Fi is free in the communal areas, but it is BT Openzone in the bedrooms, so you will pay for this, unless you are a BT customer, in which case you can get online with your normal login details. The hotel is relatively low level, so there are some long-ish walks to the rooms, but this is not really a problem, and I have known a lot worse - and the staff offered, unprompted, to help with luggage.

And there are lots of good things about this hotel, starting with the simple but brilliant idea of leaving a note in the room, by the standard little pots of long-life milk, inviting you to call reception and ask for a jug of fresh milk. It's complimentary, it arrived promptly, and it makes a real difference to a cup of tea. The breakfasts are outstanding. OK you only get one sausage - but what a sausage! Local and very high quality meat. Worth a dozen bland horse-meat and Bute mass produced monstrosities! Fresh tomato, eggs cooked to order - and any amount of fresh fruit, cereal, cheese, juice, croissants ... Oh - and the bread used for toast is real bread - not mass produced doughy rubbish.

Finally, the gym and pool. The sauna a disappointment: just above room temperature only. Probably a thermostat or timer problem, but it should be sorted, and should have been sorted by the second day, but wasn’t. The rest: outstanding. The steam room made up for the sauna: hot steam rather than the cold flabby stuff I was expecting. The pool is only 20m long and has no deep end, but this allows for serious swimming, and it is neither too hot nor too cold. The gym is fabulous: lots of good quality runners, cycling machines, steppers etc, and free weights available too. No pull-up bar, oddly. The changing rooms (which are properly warm) are just slightly tired, but are to be re-vamped in the next few months.

Room Tip: I was in room 126, a family room but used for single occupation: this had a sofa and desk as well as...

My wife and I stayed for two nights so we could shop in Chester. We don’t like city center hotels and this one has a nice quiet setting six miles from the city center. Our executive room was of a high standard with the usual large king size MacDonald hotel bed although this one seemed even more comfortable than normal. The restaurant was inviting and looked recently decorated with food of a high standard, particularly for a hotel. Prices were not excessive and the portions were a decent size. It is a large restaurant and both nights it seemed fully booked, always a good sign. The reception staff were friendly and helpful and pointed out that a discount for hotel guests was frequently offered at the Cheshire Oaks retail park. We shall certainly return for another stay.

Thought this would be a top class hotel, the rooms are tired and old fashioned I had a long walk to the room, a bus would have helped ! In the restraunt the service was good but the food was average, pity the prices were not, I thought the breakfast was excellent.
