We enjoyed 10 days in Paris over Christmas 2010.

We started at Hilton Paris La Defense in the financial district (metro zone 3) for the 5 days for business. We moved to Hotel Le Six in central Paris (metro zone 1) for the 5 day vacation part.

Thankfully, we were well warned by other contributors that this Hilton was hard to find. With that in mind and hauling baggage and landing during an airport weather fiasco, we took a cab. Our driver appeared to be circling and running up the meter, but it really is quite the driving maze to get to the hotel. He dropped us off at the “front door”, where we were met by a bell captain who directed us to the parkade elevator to go up to the check in counter. Although there was signage, it’s a very confusing location and layout. The 50 EUR taxi fare shown on the hotel’s website was accurate.

The hotel is in the CNIT complex. There’s a RER and metro station in that building, along with a couple of lunch restaurants and a day cafe. There is a huge shopping mall (Les Quatre Temps) right across the square, including a three story grocery store (Auchan) to buy drinking water, demineralised water for the CPAP machine, snacks and absolutely anything you forgot to bring. The mall also contains every major chain store and lots of places to eat. However, it’s only open until 8:00 pm (the restaurants with outside doors are open until 11:00 pm). In the square is the modern version of the Arc de Triomphe (Grande Arche de la Defense). We had an “outside” view room and could see both the mall and the arch. We also had the seasonal bonus of a Christmas market right in the plaza. The “inside” view rooms overlook the interior of the CNIT complex. Part of the hotel was under renovation, which rendered some of the rooms (not ours) noisy and the lobby lounge in transition.

Our room (#235) looked exactly like the Hilton website gallery photos: large bathroom with a separate spa tub and glass shower, comfy king bed. The room had a segregated desk area and comfy leather lounge chair. An entire wall was windows. Nice room amenities, but with the predictable overpriced minibar.

The staff was helpful, polite and professional. The dining room was virtually empty when we were there, so it lacked ambience. The food was excellent, but pricey. Our better choice was eating in the lobby lounge.

The hotel was perfectly located for our needs. We were able to secure a very good room rate (178 Euro versus the 615 Euro rack rate). As the hotel is so well connected to both RER and metro lines, it would be easy to tourist from it. However, there is no local atmosphere.

Impossible to find indeed, by train or by car, except if you know that you have to try to find the CNIT in La Défense zone 6. Once in the parking lot level 4, or in the CNIT main hall, the hotel entrance is clearly indicated. Once you know your way around, it is quite easy to take the RER to the centre of Paris (7 minutes). Be prepared for a surreal setting: the largest unsupported concrete span enclosed space in the world, containing offices, shops and … this Hilton. If you reserve a room on the inside of this construction, you will not see any daylight, but only the concrete ceiling above your head. Not very romantic.
Staff at reception: well, predictable …: not aware of our room preferences (although booked through the HILTON website, they initially asked us to wait for 40 minutes at check-in!- which we refused), well trained but lacking interpersonal communication skills. Service in general is ‘perfect’ … according to their own rules and their training manual. No personal interest, nor customer care.
We reserved a Relaxation Room. We got a room with a nice view on the Esplanade de la Défense. The room itself was not that big. The working desk takes a lot of space which is a little bit strange in a … relaxation room. There were no bathrobes in the room (although clearly indicated on their website!), nor did we receive free bottles of water as HHonors Silver guests (we eventually did after asking). Bathroom was ok .
Do not try the restaurant. It was difficult, very difficult to get some coffee with our breakfast. Staff seemed only interested in removing remaining breakfast items as quickly as possible after half past nine in the morning. Dinner was terrible. Simply not edible. When we told the waiter, he didn’t give any reaction.
The hotel in general is far too expensive: not only the food, the Internet connection, minibar or other services, but also the room rates.
Readers of my review reports know that I always try to formulate constructive criticisms. This time, we are just too disappointed. Far too disappointed.

I have stayed at HIlton La Defense in the past and was not disappointed this time. Having visited Paris several times, I know you can pay a king's ransom for little more than a hole in the wall. Once I decided to have my birthday party in Paris, Hilton La Defense was at the top of the list in terms of a clean, well maintained hotel where my guests would be comfortable without draining their bank account. True, the hotel is not in central Paris (some taxi drivers had no problem finding it, others claimed it was outside Paris and an inconvenience). The traffic in Paris is so bad these days it barely matters and the hotel is a a RER and metro stop.

Once I checked in and the staff discovered I was a hilton honors members and it was my birthday and I had several guests staying at the hotel with me, they really did roll out the red carpet, with an upgrade in rooms, complimentary breakfast and wine and chocolate for my birthday. I am usually a self sufficient, solo traveler, but traveling with other people and coordinating many events, I needed the help of the concierge desk which did not disappoint. Actually the entire staff went out of their way to help and make my birthday week special.

If you are hoping to stay close to the sights of Paris, then this is not a good choice, but if you don't mind taking the metro and relish the fact that you will come home to a plush hotel room with a jacuzzi bath tub - then give Hilton La Defense a try on your next visit to Paris.

We stayed at this Hilton as we are HHonors members and were not disappointed with the Hotel or the room cost.

The accommodation was typical Hilton with a large room and bathroom and having a comfortable bed and it was very quiet for sleeping and relaxing.

With the hotel being above a Metro station, travel into the tourist spots was quick and easy.

Being in a business district there were not too many restaurants in the vicinity which were open of an evening, though the hotel's restaurant served up decent food for International business folk as it seemed that most guests were on expense accounts.

The bar was friendly with great service again and the prices were typical Paris so no surprises there.

The reception staff was exceptionally helpful with superb English language spoken and due to us being HHonors members included Breakfast for us and the manager invited my wife and I for a members drink one night which was well patronised.

The Breakfast was excellent and the staff that served and seated us were very helpful and friendly.

The cab driver from CDG airport knew where it was and we settled in quickly.
