I last revewed this restaurant in 2011 and we have continued to use it regularly since with no cause for complaint however it closed for a total re-fit in early Summer 2013, re-opening in mid July.

Being weekly curry eaters we took the chance to re-visit all the local curry restaurants again. We ate at the Bombay in Green St Green, Shimla Pink and The Spice Lounge in Orpington High St and Safron in Chelsfield. We also tried the take away only Bilash in Green St Green. To our surprise the best of these was the Bilash which being takeaway only was also the cheapest.

We then made our way back to Raj on the first weekend after it re-opened. The interior now has no carpet or Asian art work but a thoroughly modern new look. The same management were in place and we were warmly welcomed back, although some waiting staff were obviously new. We also noticed that plenty of other locals were doing the same and seeing how things had changed.

The menu remained largely the same with a about 10 new specials, a handful of new starters; several including fish such as Monkfish, Seabass and Salmon, definitely a move up in class. We tried several of the new offerings and were delighted we had. The head chef was eager to hear what we thought and we were pleased to report that this was the best meal we'd ever had there. Even the dishes we regularly have (sag and bombay aloo) were improved so clearly the management have realised that to be a sucess the refresh needed to be more than cosmetic.

Having been forced to try out the competition I'm happy to report that for us this was a clear winner. We're certain that this will once again be our regular and commend the Raj on a job well done.

"The Raj" is refreshingly traditional in a world where Indian restaurants have gone all minimalist. It retains carpet, wallpaper (not fluffy :-( ) and pictures of the Taj Mahal. All the normal staples of British curry houses are there, plus some interesting variations. The starters are very generous so make sure you take a decent appetite. The onion bhajees could sink the Graf Spee! Having tried some of the trendier local Indians, we gravitate back here to get the "full experience". Service is fine, and not too pushy. The dhansak and madras are suitably robust, and you get "half time" orange slices with your hot towels.

Not bad food but service is appalling, waited nearly 20 minutes to be aknowledge, then when the waiter took our order, another 15 minutes for the drinks to arrive. Bearing in mind the restaurnat was moderately full can't understand why this was so slow. Maybe if they were very busy i could understand.
